10:01:54 <Ahmuck> the you tube video shows a new transaction which works. however if i try to split an existing transaction it does not move the total amount down for additional split categories. this causes the split to blank out, reduce the charge/payment and throws the entire transcation out. in fact the entire transaction though as a shows is blank in amount. this is a problem when importing csv or...
10:01:55 <Ahmuck> ...qif files into gnucash and making an effort to split those transactions into proper categories. for example, in farming there are tax deductable categories and non-tax deductable categories based on usage of the equipment or supplies. when the split won't work, i am not even able to escape the bad split transaction to enter another transaction unless i delete the split. the purpose of...
10:01:57 <Ahmuck> ...the split is nullified at that point and becomes wasted effort and time. any suggestions.
10:02:57 * Ahmuck thinks that the split transaction in gnucash has only one path and does not take into account multiple user use

10:08:49 <fell> Amuck: use <tab><del><tab>... to insert additional lines, not <enter>.
10:09:27 <Ahmuck> fell: i've done that. got a question, can a split transaction be entered after the transaction has been entered?
10:10:33 <Ahmuck> clarification, can the transaction be split after the initial transaction has been entered?
10:10:39 <fell> You can adjust every transaction by editing amounts and adding or deleting new splits.
10:11:11 <Ahmuck> things get really messed up when i try.
10:11:48 <Ahmuck> i end up with the initial amount hanging out in the middle of the splits, the splits not adding up, and al type of wierd things
10:12:32 <Ahmuck> but i've not found anyone who can answer why the cause. it would seem simple, take the amount, divide it into smaller amounts that total the original amount
10:13:08 <fell> Lets assume you imported a transaction moving 110$ from bank to expense.
10:13:35 <Ahmuck> sure, 110 from checking to my feed supplier
10:13:36 <fell> but it contains 10$ deductable tax
10:13:41 <Ahmuck> sure
10:13:54 <Ahmuck> and 10 non-deductable tax
10:14:21 <fell> replace the 110 in expense by 100 and tab to the next line
10:14:49 <Ahmuck> k, just a min
10:15:03 <fell> it will insert a new line with 10, wher you adjust the account totax
10:15:07 <fell> to tax
10:16:47 <Ahmuck> just a min. i'd like to post a screenshot of just what happened when I tried this.

18:06:30 <SteveG> I just want to say Hi and express my interest in GnuCash. I took a bookkeeping exam using GnuCash and passed it. However there were somethings about GnuCash which made it not easy to get full marks as the exam has clearly been written with the expectation that Sage will be used. So, long term I am interested in seeing if I can get better at using GnuCash and possibly even make custom reports so that other students taking thi
