13:05:13 <Ahmuck> hi. i can't get splits to work right. need help
13:05:52 <jralls> Have you read the Tutorial and Concepts Guide?
13:06:10 <jralls> *Thoroughly*?
13:06:38 <Ahmuck> i've used the tutorial and it does not work the way it's described (paycheck).
13:07:06 <jralls> What is your problem?
13:07:37 <Ahmuck> i think i could best describe it with a screencast capture of what i'm doing
13:07:54 <Ahmuck> so, let me find a screen capture software for lubuntu and i'll post a link
13:07:55 <jralls> I'm not interested in that.
13:08:06 <jralls> So don't bother.
13:08:38 <jralls> However, IRC isn't a very good place for long descriptions, so try the user mailing list.
13:09:09 <jralls> gnucash-user@gnucash.org
13:10:12 <Ahmuck> i'll post my screen capture on a website somewhere indicating why gnucash splits are not working correctly
13:12:27 *** ErKa has quit IRC
13:13:11 <jralls> They're working correctly. You just don't understand how to use them correctly. That said, I'm not going to watch your screencast, but you might get someone on the user mailing list to watch it and to tell you what you're doing wrong.
13:30:34 <Ahmuck> or ... i'll probally get a lot of people to watch it
13:30:42 <Ahmuck> not here, but elsewhere

15:54:22 <vantage> Hi all, I have two gnucash accounts for Payal (US and CAN). At some point Paypal took money from one account to pay for a purchase in the other currency. How do I record this transaction? It's one number going to one account, but another number in the other account because of the currency conversion. Thoughts?

16:33:50 <jralls> vantage: Assuming that you have the two accounts in GnuCash set up for the appropriate currencies, just do a transfer transaction and the usual transfer dialog box will come up to get the exchange rate.
16:48:01 *** isaacd has joined #gnucash
16:59:24 <vantage> jralls: Yeah, I had imported the transactions in from CSV and when editing the menu doesn't come up. I ended up deleting and recreating it. Is there a way to do it without doing that?
16:59:57 <vantage> jralls: I tried manually setting the numbers in a split, but it always gave me an imbalance
17:00:23 <vantage> jralls: using edit exchange rate

18:54:19 <jralls> vantage: Sorry, I got called away for a while.
18:55:01 <jralls> Do you have trading accounts enabled, and are there more than two splits in the txn?
18:55:57 <vantage> jralls: Not sure about trading accounts, but what is the R column for (options are c, n). I noticed the newly created version sets both to n, while the imported version sets one to c and one to n
18:57:40 <jralls> That's reconciled: N is not reconciled, C is cleared (e.g. a check has been payed by the bank) and R is reconciled, normally meaning that you've reconciled the transaction (split, really) with a bank statement or similar using the Reconcile dialog.
18:58:48 <jralls> Are you trying to edit the exchange rate in split view?
19:06:17 <vantage> jralls: That's what I was trying to do.
19:19:45 <vantage> jralls: Think I got it figured out now. Thanks!
19:19:52 <jralls> That can get pretty frustrating. Make sure you have 2.6.2, it's a bit better there than earlier versions. You have to not only edit the exchange rate but also set the amounts in each split to the right values. Plus there's usually only one split that has the exchange rate on it, which can make things more "interesting". If you can't get it to work in one account, try the other: That changes which split holds the exchange rate (which is a field in the display
19:19:53 <jralls> register, not in the transaction or splits).
19:21:19 <vantage> jralls: It's a bit confusing because each account will have the same numbers in the split, but if you look at each account they'll have different numbers. So in CAN account it will say 100 in 100 out, in US account it will say 102 in 102 out.
19:21:42 <vantage> jralls: and somewhere in between magic happens :)
19:22:26 <vantage> jralls: I would have expected to see 100 in and 102 out in one and 102 in 100 out in the other.
19:44:35 <vantage> jralls: Ok, gotta run. Thanks again for your help!

20:09:13 <MaxH23> Hello all... I'm using gnucash for personal non-business use. If I wanted to keep track of how much I currently owe from bills received (but haven't paid), is there an ideal way of doing this while still being able to determine what my monthly cost is for the bills without having to setup all of the various buiness features in gnucash?
20:11:43 <jralls> You'd have to mimic the accounts-payable process with a liability account. When you get a bill, you'd book it against expenses and the liability account, and when you pay it you'd book the payment from the checking account to the liability account.
20:13:30 <MaxH23> Excellent... thank you jralls! I appreciate your help :-)
20:14:12 <jralls> You're welcome.

20:31:40 <Ahmuck> hi. could someone please provide a video example of the help manual 4.2.2 through 4.3 for me. Working through the help section results in FALTA for me. I've been attempting this for over a year now. It's the only thing that has kept me from committing to gnucash fully.
20:32:08 <Ahmuck> FALTA = FAIL
20:45:18 <MaxH23> Ahmuck, I'm a novice with gnucash, but I've found youtube to be helpful for understanding some parts of gnucash.
20:45:54 <MaxH23> I noticed they have a video on dealing with split transactions.
20:47:20 <MaxH23> If it's not helpful, I'm sure someone here will eventually be around to help too :-)
20:50:26 <Ahmuck> i'll try there and see if I can't reproduce the video. split transactions is going to be the death of gnucash for me if i can't get it to work. i'm tired of trying to deal with it.

21:25:03 <Ahmuck> the you tube video shows a new transaction which works. however if i try to split an existing transaction it does not move the total amount down for additional split categories. this causes the split to blank out, reduce the charge/payment and throws the entire transcation out. in fact the entire transaction though as a shows is blank in amount. this is a problem when importing csv or...
21:25:05 <Ahmuck> ...qif files into gnucash and making an effort to split those transactions into proper categories. for example, in farming there are tax deductable categories and non-tax deductable categories based on usage of the equipment or supplies. when the split won't work, i am not even able to escape the bad split transaction to enter another transaction unless i delete the split. the purpose of...
21:25:06 <Ahmuck> ...the split is nullified at that point and becomes wasted effort and time. any suggestions.
21:38:42 <MaxH23> no idea... I'm a novice. Someone else in the channel might see your question when they return and might have some info for you.
21:39:20 <MaxH23> Are you using gnucash 2.6?
21:45:15 *** jralls has quit IRC
21:52:38 <Ahmuck> yes
21:57:02 <MaxH23> I'm off to sleep... I hope you're able to find a solution to your issue. Maybe keep an eye on this channel and jump in when you see some activity. If most of these people are North American, you probably won't see any activity for the next 10 hours or so :-)
