13:36:16 <gjanssens> warlord I saw your commit re the japanese fonts and you comment on the fedora bugreport
13:36:30 <gjanssens> Good that the fonts are now available in Fedora!
13:36:36 <warlord> Yeah...
13:36:50 <warlord> ipa-ex-gothic-fonts and ipa-ex-mincho-fonts
13:37:00 <gjanssens> And do they work, or should you still be able to run the fop command first ?
13:37:18 <warlord> I have no idea; the sources seem to require the fop command
13:37:41 <gjanssens> Bummer :(
13:37:44 *** jmd has quit IRC
13:37:50 <warlord> "the sources" == gnucash-docs
13:37:56 <warlord> I have not tried hacking around that..
13:38:41 <gjanssens> The commans are generating some kind of font metrics files, right ?
13:38:57 <gjanssens> Where did you get those on the old system ?
13:39:14 <gjanssens> Because you were able to compile the japanese docs
13:39:25 <gjanssens> (IIRC)
13:40:09 <warlord> No, I was not
13:40:24 <warlord> I was never able to generate a jp pdf
13:40:35 <warlord> someone gave me one which I used (until I accidentally erased it)
13:41:27 <gjanssens> Oh, that sucks
13:42:09 <gjanssens> Anyway, a copy should still be available in the gnucash-htdocs repository
13:43:38 <warlord> I'd rather be able to build it myself ;)
13:43:56 <warlord> Just need to work around the fop metrics issue
13:44:11 <gjanssens> Sure :)
13:47:03 <warlord> I wonder what's different on Ubuntu that the converter works there but not on Fedora?
13:49:11 *** Krzysiek_K has joined #gnucash
13:52:07 <gjanssens> Yeah, I wonder about that as well
13:52:22 <gjanssens> I know they have a script for this, but I haven't looked into any details
13:52:25 <warlord> john_: Unfortunately rsync wont work in many cases because it's transferring databases, etc. Sure, I could use rsync for the pipermail archives, but that's so small compared to everything else..
13:52:36 <warlord> Me, either..
13:52:53 <warlord> I wonder if we could pre-build the metrics file and just include them in gnucash-docs ? ;)
13:53:06 <warlord> (maybe based on the sha1sum of the ttf files?)
13:53:19 <gjanssens> Perhaps
13:54:27 *** john_ has left #gnucash
13:54:39 <warlord> I see no reason we would need to rebuild it every time... It's not like the font file changes.
13:56:38 *** john_ has joined #gnucash
13:58:29 *** gncbot sets mode: +o john_
14:04:19 <warlord> gjanssens: what do you think? Should we cache the output from the fop- conversion?
14:13:18 <gjanssens> warlord: well, the fedora fop bug has seen no progress in more than a year
14:13:35 <gjanssens> I think working around the issue would be a good idea
14:13:55 <gjanssens> If fop ever gets fixed in fedora, we can simply drop the workaround
14:14:12 <gjanssens> So if not too complicated, I'm in favour of adding the metrics files
14:14:39 <warlord> gjanssens: I think it would be fairly easy; I just don't have ready access to a system to generate them. (I can email the .ttf files)
14:15:39 <gjanssens> Neither have I. I'm on Fedora just like you
14:15:52 <gjanssens> john_ has a debian test machine IIRC
14:16:06 <gjanssens> perhaps debian has got a working fop as well
14:16:19 <warlord> I would expect so, if Ubuntu does
14:16:58 * john_ has only macs with a ton of VMs, including Debian and Fedora.
14:17:22 <warlord> that's better than we have..
14:17:27 <warlord> ;)
14:17:47 <warlord> basically we want to pre-process the jp .ttf files so gnucash-docs can generate jp pdfs
14:17:58 <warlord> but fop is broken on fedora and cannot generate the ttf metrics
14:18:20 <john_> FWIW I'm not entirely sure that the Japanese Guide built correctly when I released the new docs 2 weeks ago.
14:18:41 <john_> But I did it on Fedora; maybe that's why.
14:20:03 <gjanssens> Most likely indeed
14:20:51 *** goibhniu has joined #gnucash
14:21:34 <john_> So I'll fire up Debian and see what happens...
14:22:01 <john_> BTW, do either of you know why I'm suddenly john_ instead of john?
14:22:40 <warlord> There might be another "john" on the network?
14:23:26 <warlord> yep: /whois john reports "--- [john] (~john@athedsl-247703.home.otenet.gr) : John -- on 5 channels.
14:24:03 <john_> Ah. So I should change my id to jralls, where I'm more likely to be unique.
14:24:12 <john_> Will that mess up gncbot?
14:24:53 <warlord> Possibly... But we can fix that.
14:25:29 <john_> OK. Back in a minute.

14:33:41 <warlord> Good.
14:34:10 <warlord> Not sure if it'll remember you per-se... (actually, I think it might ignore your actual nick and just use your ID info)
14:35:01 <jralls> Just looked at the Debian VM. That *is* where I built the docs for release. So it seems to be broken there as well. I'll redo it to see the error.
14:35:39 <warlord> You would see during configure; it looks for fop-ttfreader
14:35:54 <jralls> Re: nick. I don't think so, as I came in with a different id on a different server.
14:36:26 <jralls> Or at least a different server alias: irc.gnome.org vs. irc.gimp.org.
14:38:42 <warlord> By ID I mean "--> jralls (~john@67.169.5.207) has joined #gnucash"
14:39:47 <jralls> Huh. So it's getting the userid from my machine rather than the one I supplied to Colloquy in the server config. Interesting.
14:40:48 <warlord> Yeah, it's the "Ident" ID

14:48:48 <jralls> Not surprising since I imagine we got them from the same place.
14:49:20 <gjanssens> jralls: does debian ship the tool called fop-ttfreader ?
14:49:29 <gjanssens> fedora doesn't have it
14:49:52 <gjanssens> But according to the fop website, you should be able to use fop directly
14:49:54 <jralls> Yes.
14:50:00 <gjanssens> which is what I have experimented with in the past
14:50:16 <gjanssens> but on fedora fop crashes when trying to generate the metrics files
14:50:44 <gjanssens> so if you have fop-ttfreader your debian vm may be able to generate the metrics files

15:12:00 <warlord> LOL
15:12:15 <warlord> Do we still need the ttfmetrics for fop to work?
15:13:31 <gjanssens> LOL
15:13:46 <gjanssens> I did work once on Ubuntu
15:14:38 <gjanssens> The Japanese pdf that's currently on our website was donated and generated on Ubunut
15:15:12 <gjanssens> Ubuntu... slip of the fingers, happens all the time with that distro :(
15:15:37 <jralls> How long ago? Maybe it was an older version of the font.
15:15:56 <gjanssens> I don't recall who it was, but I do recall being involved in an irc conversation together with warlord about it
15:16:10 <gjanssens> I was working on the website back then
15:16:37 <jralls> When I ran fop-ttfreader -d on the font, it said that the font has 12238 glyphs, but the array exception is for an index of 12244.
15:18:02 <gjanssens> I added the Japanese pdf file in February 2011
15:18:38 <gjanssens> I may have been on code at that time, I don't remember
15:18:57 <jralls> And the release notes for the current set is Nov. 2012.
15:21:18 <jralls> Hmm. Tried it on the other font file and it also has 12238 glyphs, but the exception is for index = 12237.
15:22:02 <warlord> I suspect the exception is a bug... I suppose we could upload the ttf to apache with a bug report. I also suspect we just need the font metrics output once (assuming we actually *need* the metrics)
15:27:13 <gjanssens> http://lists.gnucash.org/logs/2012/11/2012-11-21.html#T15:34:02
15:27:30 <gjanssens> I asked about the Japanese pdf back then
15:27:36 <gjanssens> But it was donated earlier
15:37:24 <warlord> Hmm, I wonder what happens if we run fop w/o the .xml files?
15:38:02 <gjanssens> ... and I added the Japanese pdf file way earlier to the website already:
15:38:04 <gjanssens> http://lists.gnucash.org/pipermail/gnucash-changes/2010-November/008974.html
15:39:10 <warlord> gjanssens: do we want to just keep that pdf file? Or do we want to be able to generate it on code?
15:41:57 <jralls> If we don't have a new Japanese translation, do we actually need to build it again?
15:42:32 <warlord> Probably not... But do we want to limit ourselves for the next translator that comes and require them to generate a PDF for us? ;)
15:44:21 <gjanssens> No, of course not
15:44:44 <gjanssens> I was just trying to recover whoever it was that managed to build the original pdf
15:44:50 <gjanssens> perhaps we could contact him
15:45:05 <jralls> How hard would it be to switch to a different font?
15:46:07 *** Krzysiek_K has left #gnucash
15:47:23 <gjanssens> Probably very easy, if you know a font we are legally allowed to embed in our pdfs
15:51:37 <warlord> Yeah, I thought the main issue was font licensing
15:52:43 <jralls> Heh. I just went looking in the Debian Package Manager and found fonts-ipafont. But there's also an older kochi font set. Says it's "legacy" and "deprecated".
15:57:09 <jralls> There seem to be a bunch of japanese fonts. Hmm, the ipa fonts might be an older version as well. I'll install and see what happens.
16:00:35 <jralls> So the ipaex font fails the same as the one from the ipa site. Interestingly, Debian says that it's an opentype rather than a truetype font. That might be the problem with fop-ttfreader.
16:04:37 <jralls> And at least one of the other fonts makes it through fop-ttfreader. I'll see if I can figure out how to substitute it.

18:06:11 <jralls> warlord: Generating the Japanese PDF worked using the Debian font package fonts-horai-umefont. It was the only other one I found which supports gothic as well as mincho. It just requires passing --with-japanese-fontdir, --with-japanese-gothic-font, and --with-japanese-mincho-font with appropriate args to configure, then make pdf.
18:06:47 <jralls> The project page is http://sourceforge.jp/projects/ume-font/, but it's almost all in Japanese.
18:09:40 <jralls> Took me a minute to realize that it's sourceforge.JP, so I guess the lack of English is understandable.
18:11:09 <warlord> I wonder if we could just include the .ttf files in gnucash-docs?
