11:29:02 <fell> hoi, gjanssens!
11:32:26 <gjanssens> hey fell
11:33:10 <fell> For which reason do we have basics_AccountRelationships as png and svg in our guides incl translations?
11:35:12 <gjanssens> good question...
11:35:18 * gjanssens is checking...
11:35:39 <fell> in the figures dir as file and a double reference in ch_accts.xml
11:38:05 *** ErKa has joined #gnucash
11:38:45 <gjanssens> The svg file was added to improve the pdf output. The png was really ugly in there.
11:38:50 <gjanssens> From the commit log:
11:38:54 <gjanssens> Use different accounting equation image for html or pdf rendering
11:38:55 <gjanssens> This is meant as an example of how the pdf images can be improved.
11:38:56 <gjanssens> This may not work well for screenshots though.
11:39:18 <gjanssens> That's r19880
11:40:01 <gjanssens> The same idea could be used to insert higer resolution screenshots in the pdf, but it was never done
11:40:56 <fell> <imageobject role="fo" means use it for fop?
11:41:43 <gjanssens> yes
11:43:05 <fell> Ok, then I will later try to patch a comment line explaining it.
11:47:26 <gjanssens> Thanks

12:59:08 <gnucash> Hello, I am very close to switching to gnucash but there is only one feature that I really want that I do not see here. I would like to have someway I could scan documents into this program.
13:00:59 <gnucash> For example, simple receipts. Or, when I ship something I can scan in the bill of laden and the signed packing slip. Or when someone sends us a check, I can scan a copy and attach it to payment received same for deposits I can scan in deposit slips.
13:01:39 <gnucash> Also, I could scan in purchase orders, msds etc etc. really eliminate all the paper work. Seems very simple.
13:02:16 <gnucash> If there is a way to do this, can someone send me an email to steve_moser at yahoo com thanks!
13:02:44 <PaulFertser> gnucash: you're supposed to wait here for discussion/answer.
13:03:23 <PaulFertser> gnucash: if that's a feature proposal you can probably file it on uservotes (? I do not remember how exactly that site used by GnuCash is called) and/or vote for it.
13:03:59 <gnucash> Thanks, first time I used the IRC. do I have to wait or can I check back? the screen was blank when I logged on.
13:04:07 <gnucash> OK I will check the site
13:04:12 <PaulFertser> gnucash: but as a simple workaround you can try to quickly hack up something on your own, GnuCash has Scheme (Guile) and Python APIs so you should be able to do that ad-hoc.
13:04:44 <PaulFertser> gnucash: you're supposed to stay on the channel for as long as possible to participate in chats :)
13:05:51 <gnucash> OK. Not sure I can do the guile api ad-hoc stuff, no definately sure I can not, I could learn but dont have the time. how long would it take a zero to figure that stuff out?
13:08:51 <PaulFertser> gnucash: with zero experience in programming? Well, probably a month of learning if you learn fast. But you can also define some ad-hoc self-management procedure e.g. to have a particular directory hierarchy and filenaming convention and to always follow it when storing scans, that should probably be good enough.
13:09:16 <PaulFertser> SICP is an excellent textbook.
13:09:57 <gnucash> That is what I figured, easy, but not that easy. I found this feature has been first requested back in 2006 here:https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=336843 I guess I will have to wait a while. I am reading it now.
13:14:18 <warlord> gnucash: the upcoming 2.6 will have a way for you to link a scanned image to your data file (by passing it a filename or URI), but it will neither scan the document for you nor will it store the scanned item, just the reference to it. 2.6 is due around new year.
13:14:57 <warlord> So you will still need to use xsane or some other scanner app first.
13:15:09 <warlord> (gnucash is an accounting app, not a scanner app)
13:17:38 <gnucash> OK, maybe I underestimated myself when I said zero. I got the difference with the scanner/accounting apps. So if I backup gnucash, will it backup all the scanned documents?
13:21:16 <gnucash> so will these "links" be attached to specific items? example receipts to expense reports, scanned bill of laden to invoice, scanned purchase order with sales order?
13:22:30 <warlord> No
13:22:33 <warlord> it will not.
13:22:43 <warlord> It only keeps a reference to the scanned doc, not a copy
13:23:08 <warlord> 2nd question: yes, you would attach the scanned document to a specific transaction.
13:23:20 <warlord> I do not know if it will allow you to attach multiple scanned docs to the same txn
13:23:29 <warlord> (it's a newly donated feature)
13:23:56 <gnucash> OK, thank you very much. It looks like it is close.
13:24:27 <gnucash> Dont need multiple documents, just scan a multiple page pdf and attach one file
13:24:44 <warlord> Right
13:26:00 <gnucash> Thanks Again you can close this thread

15:19:18 <john> scientes: Debian sid is unstable. The fact that you're using it means that you're a developer yourself, quite capable of debugging your crash, ascertaining the problem, and filing the appropriate bugs upstream. Otherwise you should be using stable or testing... And last I checked, about a month ago, Gnucash works just fine on Wheezy and Jessie.
15:19:56 <john> I'm starting a trunk build on Jessie now, to make sure...
15:19:58 <scientes> yeah i'm compiling from source now
15:20:14 <scientes> it crashes when i try to change the date of the opening transactions
15:24:54 <scientes> after recompiling it seems to work
15:25:34 <john> I hate it when that happens.
15:26:01 <scientes> the debian packge does have a -dbg package
15:26:46 <john> What version of GC is the debian package? Did you try checking out that version for your test?
15:27:27 <scientes> yeah i build the debian package again
15:27:40 <scientes> from the exact same source
15:27:55 <scientes> ...mainly cause svn is really slow
15:28:13 <john> That's why we're switching to git.
15:28:20 <john> Well, one of many reasons.
15:28:21 <scientes> yeah i love git

15:43:05 <scientes> its red in the total column
15:43:36 <john> What do you mean by "at the bottom"?
15:43:45 <scientes> $, Grand Total:
15:44:17 <john> Ah, in the status line.
15:44:18 <scientes> Net Assets: Profits:
15:44:19 <scientes> yeah

15:48:05 <john> Had you just deleted a txn? There's an open bug for that, https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=578133
15:51:22 <scientes> nope havn't deleted a txn yet
15:55:26 *** mikee has joined #gnucash
15:55:50 <john> I just tested rather simple-mindedly with trunk by creating a new file and entering a spend transaction for $100. That works correctly, so your case must be more complex. Can you explain it well enough here? if not, please open a bug.
15:56:16 <scientes> it shows assets as negative?
15:56:18 <scientes> hmm
15:57:20 <scientes> yeah i just created a new account, created a $100 expense
15:57:27 <scientes> and it shows as positive in the status bar
15:57:32 *** Topcat has quit IRC
15:57:58 <john> You never did say what version you're using.
15:58:48 <scientes> 2.5.8
15:58:59 <scientes> it crashed with SIGTRAP when i went to the about dialogue
15:59:24 <scientes> https://paste.debian.net/68629/
16:01:15 <john> That's a missing file assert. See https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=708526
16:02:26 <scientes> so now that i have a working gnucash i am happy :)

16:05:51 <scientes> no that didn't change
16:05:57 <scientes> but to me its cosmetic
16:06:22 <scientes> it will be fixed when i get my bank statement and input my income
