17:00:06 <ses1984> im trying to begin tracking my main checking account. i've imported a bunch of transactions. i have created liability, income and expense accounts that deposit and withdraw from that account,
17:00:24 <ses1984> and specified which accounts for nearly each transaction
17:02:04 <ses1984> the numbers that gnucash calculated don't match with what i expect for the balance of my checking account, and i'm not quite sure where to begin finding the problem
17:02:38 <ses1984> the balance that gnucash calculated for my checking account is many times higher than what i actually have in my checking account
17:02:51 *** Ard0nik has joined #gnucash
17:03:42 *** Ardonik has quit IRC
17:05:41 <ses1984> so i just thought there must be some missing transactions and got the oldest statement from my bank that corresponds with the data i imported from my bank
17:06:02 <ses1984> which shows that the data i downloaded from my bank is actually incomplete before 18 months ago, compared to my statements
17:07:16 *** aqua___ has quit IRC
17:07:34 <ses1984> is there a shortcut to correcting the missing transactions, without having to enter every one
17:10:20 <john> Depends on how bad is your OCD. The simplest thing to do would be to enter a single adjustment transaction for the day before the first complete download.
17:12:33 <ses1984> what if my OCD is not that but, but it's bad enough that the simplest is too simple. what's the next level
17:14:42 <john> Well, you could make a spreadsheet with a column for each balancing account and enter the amount of each missing transaction in the appropriate column, then sum the columns and make a balancing transaction for each. That would get your total expenses correct.
17:15:47 <john> The next level after that would be to split up your totals by years, which would let you trend expenses per category. After that, it's probably not significantly more work to just enter the txns in Gnucash.
17:17:28 <ses1984> the hardest part about entering them is trying to figure out which ones are duplicates. so i think i can just wipe them all out before a certain date and start over. i only need to re-enter 6 months of data, compared to the 18 that's already correct (i think)
17:18:08 <ses1984> that doesn't seem like it would take much longer than the spreadsheet thing you suggested
17:21:24 <john> Oh, only 6 months? Reconcile each month with missing data. That makes it easy to highlight the missing ones on the statement, and enter them. The register window isn't modal, so you can enter and adjust each month as needed with it open.
17:23:26 <ses1984> when you say reconcile, do you mean like actions > reconcile or something else. i'm pretty new with accounting terminology so if you meant something more abstract, i dont know what the quickest apparent way would be to do that in gnucash
17:24:34 <john> Yup, actions>reconcile, or the reconcile button in the toolbar.
17:24:57 <john> http://gnucash.org/docs/v2.4/C/gnucash-guide/txns-reconcile1.html
17:30:08 <ses1984> thanks
17:47:12 <ses1984> ok so i'm trying to reconcile a statement for the first time, and it's showing me every transaction in the account in the reconcile window, so im not sure how i can reconcile one month at at ime
17:48:12 <warlord> ses1984: you need to start at the beginning.
17:50:33 <ses1984> im not quite sure what you mean, i have 18 months of data imported, and i'm trying to reconcile the statement that corresponds to the first month of data
17:52:37 <warlord> Okay... so what's the issue? Click off the items from that first statement (plus your opening balance)
17:54:15 <ses1984> i think i just need to add a line item in equity > opening balances that correponds to the opening balance on my statement, and include that in the reconciliation?
18:04:51 <warlord> Yes
18:18:51 <john> ses1984: No, unless you've decided to get rid of the previous 6 months.
18:19:06 <john> You want to start with the first of *those* statements.
18:19:54 <john> First, if you didn't already, add the opening balance for that first statement. The balancing account is normally Equity:Opening Balances.
18:19:54 <ses1984> yeah, i did decide to throw them out
18:20:01 <john> Oh, OK.
18:20:36 <john> Did you delete all of the transactions from before 18 months ago as well?
18:20:54 <ses1984> with the correct data, i have more than one year, and i dont think the year over year data i would get by going back another 6 months would be all that valuable
18:20:54 <ses1984> yes i did
18:21:14 <john> Less OCD than you thought, eh? ;-)
18:28:15 <warlord> I always suggest starting at Jan 1st ;)
18:53:28 <ses1984> maybe i'm reading this wrong, but i have transactions in my checking account that are marked reconciled, but when viewing corresponding transactions like expenses, it seems like the same transaction is not reconciled from that perspective. what does that mean

19:40:13 <john> ses1984: Each account reconciles separately. One normally reconciles only asset accounts. Not much point to "reconciling" an account for which nobody else is keeping books.

22:53:03 <naught101> Would a crowdfunding project for https://gnucash.uservoice.com/forums/101223-feature-request/suggestions/1543027-transaction-classifications work at the moment, or are there major things blocking that feature?
23:31:22 <Qlaras> Trying to track the bi-monthly paycheck that also auto-deducts for dental, medical and vision payments - is this possible from a single scheduled transaction?
23:40:20 <warlord> naught101: I dont know of anything blocking the feature except resources.
23:40:35 <warlord> Qlaras: sure.
23:40:38 <naught101> ok
23:42:49 <Qlaras> Is there a better guide than the documentation & wiki on setting up semi-complex scheduled transactions? (I'd be fine helping improve the manual, once I understand it myself)
23:43:04 <Qlaras> Trying to migrate to GNUCash from my head which has been doing a terribad job of tracking my finances.
23:45:33 <Qlaras> Didn't trust Teh Cloud(TM) with my finances before the NSA revelations, definitely don't now ;-P
23:48:40 <warlord> Qlaras: enter it as a regular transaction and then select it and click "Schedule"?
23:48:51 <warlord> (and by regular I mean "regular split transaction")
