03:44:39 <johey> In vendor bills, what's the difference between Invoice ID and Billing ID? When reading the manual, they look the same to me.

07:41:33 <warlord> johey: One is your ID, the other is the vendor's ID.
07:42:06 <warlord> E.g., they send you a bill with a bill # on it. That's their reference#. You enter it into your system which has your own numbering scheme.
07:42:37 <warlord> mikee: any chance you can op gncbot ?
07:48:12 <johey> warlord: I see. Which one is which? I find the manual to be quite unclear...
07:49:36 <warlord> InvoiceID is your #, Billing ID is theirs
07:50:20 <johey> Ok, thanks!
07:50:41 <johey> Maybe what I am reading is not the official manual. :) http://www.hep.by/gnu/gnucash-guide/bus-ap-bills1.html
07:51:21 <warlord> I have no idea what that is... The official manual is at www.gnucash.org under "documentation"
07:51:36 <warlord> (although that looks like it might be a mirror)
07:53:00 <warlord> Another way to know is that the InvoiceID will be auto-filled if you leave it blank, whereas the Billing ID can be left blank.
07:56:16 <johey> Ok... I'm a little unsure how to handle the InvoiceID. How does it relate to the physical papercopy? Should I write down the BillingID on it and keep it in BillingID order?
07:56:32 <johey> Sorry, not BillingID. InvoiceID.
07:56:58 <johey> (I'm new to business accounting)
07:57:06 <warlord> If you want..
07:57:19 <warlord> Honestly, even though I wrote that code, I never used the vendor side, only the invoice side.
07:57:36 <warlord> (granted, I wrote it 12 years ago)
07:59:56 <johey> Swedish law is quite strict. I must keep the original invoice in the same order I received them, ordering them in an unbreaked series and connect the number to the transaction in my accounting. Is the InvoiceID the right place to do that? So far, I've used the Number field in my account for that. I just found out there is a billing function.
08:00:11 <warlord> Yes
08:00:38 <warlord> If you leave the number blank then gnucash will auto-increment the number for you when you go to the next screen.
08:03:12 <johey> Ok. But that means that when I pay in cash or by card, I still must create a bill for it, to keep the numbering intact?
08:04:09 <warlord> Effectively, yes. Vendor Bills are Payables; they are for when you get billed for sometihng one one day and pay them later.
08:04:28 <warlord> If you pay immediately then technically it's not a Payable so shouldn't go there.
08:07:03 <johey> So payables should be numbered by InvoiceID, and cash pays should be numbered in the Num field of the normal transactions... Have I understood correctly? :)
08:07:53 <johey> And I need to keep track of the number series myself if I mix those two methods?
08:10:45 <warlord> Something like that.
08:10:56 <warlord> There is no global "expense #" counter in gnucash.
08:11:34 <warlord> Gotta run...
08:14:45 <johey> Ok, thank you warlord!

18:16:07 <eric> hi. what's the best way to pay an invoice with a discount? paid in full, then split afterwards, or enter payment, then an additional payment for the discount (for which i have a separate expense category)? other?

19:39:09 <warlord> eric: IMHO, pay in full and then split the amount out of Cash to e.g. Expenses:Discount Given
19:42:33 <warlord> john: is there a way to revert a commit without also reverting the changes? I.e., just "uncommit", not "delete the commit and patch back to the previous commit"?

21:17:21 <Judah> Back to this problem. It seems that gnucash installed its gconf files to /usr/local/etc/gconf. I'm guessing gconf needed to be told about this. I tried various things but no luck ... until ... today it works. Is there something about rebooting or logout/login that causes gconf to re-read config files and do something?
21:31:52 <warlord> Judah: possibly
