06:09:49 <PaulFertser> It seems the GNUCash for Android companion app is not that fine in the end. Only a single developer working on it, and bugs stay there for many months, and it's inflexible and not fast to use. Also, he seems to like his OFX choice so much that doesn't even consider better formats even though it's clear now OFX isn't suitable for the purpose :(

10:55:07 <twunder> kudos to whomever created the gnucash android app. Just performed 2 test transactions with it and it seems to work like a charm.
10:57:10 <PaulFertser> twunder: how do you match the transactions then on importing?
10:57:49 <PaulFertser> twunder: do you have to manually select accounts? Does the generated OFX pass ofxdump checks without errors?
10:58:39 <twunder> PaulFertser: I simply created a single transaction in a single account and was able to match the account from the exported OFX file. I have not tested, but I'm assuming that future transactions on that account pair will just match up i nthe future.
10:59:31 <twunder> I did a single credit card transaction, matched it to the right account; then did a single checking account transaction.
10:59:39 <PaulFertser> twunder: so I assume you didn't import the gnucash account structure from the desktop file, right? And just manually matched the both sides of the transaction?
11:01:01 <twunder> PaulFertser: Nope, I imoprted the gnucash account structure from the desktop. I think the app assigns its own account id's to the new account structure on the phone. Those account ID's need to get matched. (I think). Have you sued it?
11:01:08 <PaulFertser> In the OFX i have all accounts like "org.gnucash.android 1052f67cf..." so on import I have to select which account teh correspond to.
11:02:07 <twunder> hmmm... deserves further testing. my assumptions may be faulty.
11:02:38 <warlord> johey: GnuCash invoices imply accrual. Right now gnucash has no method to convert from Accrual to Cash, so if you need to record as Cash then you cannot use the GnuCash invoicing method.
11:03:40 <warlord> PaulFertser: yeah, the App developer didn't really understand how to get the gnucash importer to auto-match the account.. He used the account GUID, but the importer doesn't use that.
11:05:14 <PaulFertser> warlord: btw, i see 'Суббота' in the bayes map as one of the keys, that looks like it used locale's weekday name and feels like a bug.
11:06:12 *** Topcat has quit IRC
11:06:38 <warlord> PaulFertser: What's the content of the OFX transaction details in question that sourced that key?
11:07:16 <warlord> Perhaps that string was in the OFX Memo?
11:07:44 <twunder> PaulFertser: Just did an import of 2 transactions, credirt card and checking. The importer matched the transactions to the right accounts. So it seems that once the association is made, the importer will work fine.
11:08:30 <PaulFertser> warlord: no, I thought as well, but no.
11:10:05 <twunder> PaulFertser: It probably makes more sense to not import the desktop account structure, since that seems to provide no benefit for matching accounts and creates lots of clutter on the android app. Since I only want a way to import my credit card and debit card transactions, I should just create a new account structure on the phone with just those accounts and match them manually.
11:10:42 <warlord> PaulFertser: I haven't looked at that code in a long time. It should be using the string tokens from the OFX import data. It will take the description/memo string and break it up into indivdual tokens and apply Bayesian matching to those strings. It shouldn't be pulling in anything else. This of course assumes there isn't a bug..
11:10:45 <twunder> (or something).
11:10:59 <PaulFertser> twunder: yes, I thought as well... So far that android app seems too uncool.
11:11:23 <PaulFertser> warlord: yes, i've read your reply on the ML wrt that. Ok.
11:11:25 <warlord> To get a bug fixed you would need to supply an OFX file that has a transaction and show it imports into an account and adds additional strings, somehow...
11:12:13 * warlord has never tried the app so has no opinion.
11:12:52 * twunder is happy to see a means of easily recording day to day transactions
11:13:16 <twunder> that it doesn't match things seemlessly is just a bug that can be fixed over time
11:13:33 <PaulFertser> twunder: not if he is so persistent to use OFX I'm afraid.
11:15:03 <warlord> The biggest issue with OFX is the inability to encode split transactions. Beyond that, it does have benefits of auto-detecting re-imported transactions (it wont double-import)
11:15:07 <PaulFertser> twunder: probably Emacs tuned to write ledger files would be much better. I'm luckily not using Android myself anyway, an OpenMoko Debian user.
11:16:50 <twunder> well, OFX was probably chosing because the infrastructure is in place within gnucash to use it. IE, it was easier.
11:17:03 <twunder> chosen, even
11:25:12 <warlord> twunder: gnucash has QIF import too
11:25:18 <warlord> I dont know why OFX was chosen
11:40:19 <twunder> perhaps because OFX can be used by other desktop financial app's?

13:41:20 <PaulFertser> I'm not sure if that's a nice idea to have locale-specific data inside a .gnucash files.
