2013-09-01 GnuCash IRC logs

01:29:07 <PaulFertser> Hi there. Testing the Android companion app and have difficulties importing the resulting OFX. First of all, even the current libofx git HEAD code barks at it with "E: document type does not allow element "BANKMSGSRSV1" here" and other errors.
01:31:33 <PaulFertser> And second, even though I previously imported the full account structure from real GNUCash, the OFX has some strange "org.gnucash.android 1052f67c..." accounts so it can't be easily imported.
01:31:37 <PaulFertser> What am I missing here?

03:38:25 <PaulFertser> Ard0nik: it's the one officially recommended on the front page even. I'm a gta02 user, so I run Debian but my wife has an android tablet so it'd be nice to be able to use it too.
03:39:04 <Ard0nik> PaulFertser: Well, a pity I can't help you there, but ask me about tangerines and Dry Juice Vesicle sometime.
03:43:13 <PaulFertser> Ard0nik: ok :)

10:06:53 <PaulFertser> Does anyone here use the android companion app? I'm still puzzled by "nonconforming" OFX it emits.
10:23:33 <warlord> PaulFertser: You might try asking on the gnucash-user mailing list.
10:24:53 * warlord thinks it should've used QIF instead of OFX, but it was too late for my input by the time I realized what they were doing.
10:25:02 <PaulFertser> warlord: I will, of course, if I do not get the answer here, thank you :)
10:25:28 *** Ard0n1k has joined #gnucash
10:25:48 <warlord> PaulFertser: I suspect you've received all the answer(s) you will get from here ;)
10:26:18 <PaulFertser> warlord: i thought android is pretty popular nowadays, since the demise of OpenMoko and Maemo.
10:27:09 <warlord> Sure, but doesn't people people here use android, use the app, and know enough about it to answer your question(s). ;)
10:27:15 <warlord> er, doesn't mean...
10:27:38 <PaulFertser> What are the other options? Probably I'm missing some obvious trick to avoid using android :)
10:29:44 <warlord> Other options for what?
10:31:43 <PaulFertser> For entering expenses "on the go" when you buy something for cash "along the way" and also when the getting a statement from one's bank for his payment card is problematic (and it doesn't properly structure expenses anyway).
10:32:55 *** Ard0nik has quit IRC
10:35:01 <warlord> For the former, I just collect the receipts in my pocket and input them when I get home. For the latter, I'm not sure what the problem is
10:36:27 <PaulFertser> I mean what if I get the statement for my card expenses in some "csv" form, auto-convert it to some established format, but how and when am I supposed to specify which transactions were for "Clothing" and which for "Groceries"?
10:37:28 <warlord> PaulFertser: I still dont understand. If you enter your transactions as you make them (via the receipts you collect) then when you get your statement all you need to do is run the reconcile process to mark balance the account.
10:37:41 <warlord> .. no need to download or "import" anything.
10:38:36 <PaulFertser> warlord: aha, reconcile. Haven't read the full manual properly yet, sorry.
10:39:22 <PaulFertser> So the second question is void, ok.

12:40:27 <johey> Trying to understand the invoice function of gnucash... When should I use the post function?
12:41:10 <johey> I mean, I would like to create an invoice and send it to my customer. Then, when I eventually get the payment, I want to register the transfers.
12:41:34 <johey> Now it happens to register the transfers to the account as soon I do the post.
12:45:53 <johey> (I'm new to both gnucash and bookkeeping.)

13:25:54 <johey> Ah-a! I'm reading a bit. There are two types accounting - the "cash-flow" and the "normal" accounting (I cannot find the English translations for those words, in Swedish "kontantmetoden" and "faktureringsmetoden" respectively). It seems like gnucash only use the normal method? The cash-flow method is legal for very small companies in Sweden.
13:26:35 <johey> In the cash-flow method, you will register the invoice only once - when the customer has payed.

16:17:31 <TheRedHand> I'm getting an error message when I start GnuCash under Windows 8.

16:18:31 <TheRedHand> When I choose to debug the application, I get the following exception: "Unhandled exception at 0x6BFACC2F (libguile-17.dll) in gnucash.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation reading location 0x00000000."
