01:25:48 <infom> Hi Bobby
01:26:12 <bobby> hi. What version of gtk does gnucash currently use?
01:26:38 <infom> I have.....looking
01:26:59 <infom> 2.4.13, how about you?
01:27:23 <infom> Oops, nevermind that is not what you asked
01:27:31 <infom> I dont know what version
01:28:48 <infom> I think typically in bookkeeping, you enter transactions onto a general journal
01:29:07 <infom> and then later on you post the transactions from the general journal to the applicable ledgers
01:29:25 <infom> Gnucash does not appear to be set up this way, any idea why?

12:40:08 <ericrathhaus> not sure how to use this app but need help desparately with gnu cash. if you can help me, please respond
12:40:44 <ericrathhaus> do i just wait to see any responses?
12:42:07 <warlord> ericrathhaus: try asking your question(s)
12:43:16 <warlord> the 'parse error message" -- what was the exact error message? Also what OS/Distro are you using?
12:43:36 <ericrathhaus> i got a parse error on launching gnu cash and then it said there ws an open book. I saved the open book over my default data file
12:43:51 <ericrathhaus> mistaje because now the program is essentially blank
12:44:10 <warlord> The "open book" message is because gnucash was force-quit.. (e.g. you logged out without exiting gnucash first). You can just click "open anyways" if you're sure there's not another gnucash instance running.
12:44:24 <ericrathhaus> I deleted the data file and thought I could use an earlier version w/ save as and rename it
12:44:24 <warlord> As for renaming a file -- I'm not sure what you're trying to do or why it "fails"
12:44:35 <ericrathhaus> but can't figure out how and now I have no data file
12:44:56 <warlord> Well, if you destroyed your data file.... backups are your friend.
12:45:10 <warlord> There's nothing we can do to help you if you destroyed your own data. Sorry.
12:45:25 <ericrathhaus> when i look into the direcory that are recent versions
12:45:32 <warlord> Okay...
12:45:36 <ericrathhaus> can;t i replace with one of these
12:45:55 <ericrathhaus> the data file
12:45:58 <warlord> Sure. Copy your <foo>.YYYYMMDDHHMMSS.gnucash to <foo>.gnucash
12:46:08 <warlord> s/your/your most recent/
12:46:11 <ericrathhaus> u lost me there
12:46:29 <warlord> Sorry?
12:46:45 <ericrathhaus> i don;t understand what you're telling me to do
12:46:53 <warlord> Which word dont you understand?
12:47:04 <ericrathhaus> everything after "sure."
12:47:18 <ericrathhaus> what's <foo> . . .
12:48:00 <warlord> <foo>.gnucash is your main data file.
12:48:12 <warlord> I don't know what you call it.. Replace <foo> with the name
12:48:58 <ericrathhaus> i'm on a mac. I wanted to save an earlier version of the file to be the current data file but can;t see how to
12:50:16 <warlord> Like I said, copy the backup (<foo>.YYYYMMDDHHMMSS.gnucash) to a main file (<foo>.gnucash) and then File -> Open the <foo>.gnucash file
12:50:43 <warlord> If you don't know how to copy and rename a file, well, that's not gnucash specific and you should go somewhere for some basic computer help.
12:51:06 <ericrathhaus> i do but in finer i dont see the ootion
12:51:14 <ericrathhaus> should i use another rogram to copy and rename
12:51:44 <warlord> You could use the terminal and just "cp"
12:51:57 <warlord> cp <source> <destination>
12:52:15 <ericrathhaus> how do i get to the terminal to write the command?
12:52:21 <warlord> Run the "terminal" app
12:53:31 <ericrathhaus> i don;t have such an app
12:54:12 <ericrathhaus> so i find two types of files in my data directory ones .log and .gnucash, i use the .gnucash, right?
12:55:13 <warlord> right
12:55:38 <warlord> sorry, I don't know what to tell you. The terminal app has been in every Mac I've ever touched (in the /Applications folder)
12:56:00 <ericrathhaus> and the ones that have numbers for the date saved are older versions of my data file, right
12:56:51 <ericrathhaus> found the terminal
12:56:54 <warlord> Your main file wont have a date
12:57:04 <warlord> E.g., your main file will be something like <foo>.gnucash
12:57:21 <warlord> backup files add dates, e.g., <foo>.20130807125713.gnucash
12:57:42 <ericrathhaus> right and i want to copy the most recent older version renaming it without the date extension
12:57:52 <warlord> Right.
12:57:56 <ericrathhaus> have the terminal open
12:57:56 <warlord> And then File -> Open it from Gnucash
12:58:04 <ericrathhaus> can u just walk me through the steps
12:58:13 <warlord> great. cd into the directory where your data lives.
12:58:40 <ericrathhaus> cd?
12:58:47 <warlord> ChangeDirectory
13:01:22 <warlord> then use 'cp' (as I said above) to copy (and rename) the backup file to a main file.
13:01:26 <ericrathhaus> cd<ewrofficedata>
13:01:46 <ericrathhaus> how do I know the directory's name
13:01:53 <warlord> Well, where do you have your data?
13:02:28 <ericrathhaus> all the files are name ewrofficedata.gnucash . . .
13:02:42 <ericrathhaus> is the directory ewrofficedata?
13:03:02 <warlord> no, the directory is the folder where all your ewrofficedata.gnucash files reside
13:03:14 <warlord> Only you can tell me where that is.
13:03:23 * warlord has to go away for ~30 minutes.
13:03:34 <ericrathhaus> okay thx

14:23:56 <ericrathhaus> @warlord i was able to create a copy of a backup filebut then I got the same parsing error message
14:23:56 <gncbot> ericrathhaus: Error: "warlord" is not a valid command.
14:29:07 *** benoitg has quit IRC
14:30:56 <ericrathhaus> sp what's the error parsing data mean and how to correct?
14:39:31 *** ErKa has joined #gnucash
14:40:35 <warlord> ericrathhaus: Don't close it, just File -> Open the new one
14:40:43 <warlord> GnuCash will auto-close.
14:42:20 <ericrathhaus> so when I get the "error parsing file" message, it won;t let me do anything other than close
14:43:39 <warlord> Scan you show me a screen shot of what you're seeing? (post it to imagebin)
14:44:21 <ericrathhaus> now program is locked up, showing the wristwatch
14:45:22 <ericrathhaus> i could sharemy screen with you on skype
14:49:46 <warlord> My version of skype doesn't support that..
14:49:51 <warlord> A screenshot should be sufficient.
14:49:58 <warlord> (showing the parse error, please)
14:51:02 <ericrathhaus> I don;t know how to take screen shot, but the message is "There was an error parsing the file file:///ewr office data/ewrofficedata.gnucash."
14:52:13 <warlord> Right, and the only option should me "OK"... And if you click on that you should have an empty gnucash window
14:52:19 <warlord> .. and the gnucash menu
14:52:35 <ericrathhaus> no the only option is "close"
14:52:57 <ericrathhaus> and when i close i have an empty gnucash menu
14:55:29 <warlord> What do you mean "empty gnucash menu"?
14:55:39 <warlord> You should still have a File menu, right?
14:55:43 <warlord> (Macs are.. strange)
14:55:58 <ericrathhaus> yes still have menus at top
14:56:06 <warlord> If that doesn't work, run gnucash with the --nofile option
14:56:16 <warlord> Then just run File -> Open and choose your new file.
14:56:28 <warlord> ... the one you copied/renamed
14:57:06 <ericrathhaus> but when i do that i get the parsing error
14:57:21 <warlord> That means your backup flile was bad, too
14:58:02 <warlord> How about you keep trying to File -> OPen your backup files until you find one that works?
14:58:17 <warlord> Then you know which one to copy...
14:58:28 <ericrathhaus> yes just did that and it works gues i'l l jave to rebuild from there thanks
15:00:10 <warlord> Make sure you copy the working backup...
15:00:19 <warlord> And then File -> Open the copy...
15:00:25 <warlord> (copy and rename)
