03:49:07 <okapi> Hennakin: there are Python bindings. See http://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Python_Bindings but nothing I know of for Lua or the command-line. Much of gnucash uses guile so you can write things in Scheme.

11:50:17 <Toba> does anyone use gnucash in a networked manner, allowing multiple desktop machines used by different people to manipulate the same set of books? Would that work on a file share (eg, would changes be detected on one machine with file open, if another modifies) and do the files get locked effectively if so?
11:50:26 <Toba> I haven't been able to fin dany info on this on the gnucash site

11:59:20 <warlord> Toba: you cannot have multiple people using the same gnucash datafile simultaneously
11:59:33 <warlord> You would need some way to make sure only one person uses it at a time.
11:59:59 <warlord> Having said that, you can put the datafile on a shared system (like a file server, or dropbox) to share among people, but you still need to make sure only one person uses it at a time.
12:00:29 <Toba> hm.
12:00:39 <Toba> so there is no support for this, effectively

12:49:21 <Toba> warlord: has anyone discussed what it would take to add it? even if it would be badly done? I used gnucash long ago and am a developer by trade, so I'm thinking about it
12:49:42 <Toba> as a person familiar with the project and community, where would I begin to find out if there are others who want this and have thought about it, etc?
12:49:49 <warlord> It would require effectively completely ripping out the existing data model.
12:50:13 <Toba> nvm http://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/FAQ#Multiple_Computers.2C_Users.2C_...
12:50:14 <warlord> basically: gnucash isn't a database app. It's designed to have everything local in memory.
12:50:33 <warlord> and there's the FAQ ;)
12:50:38 <Toba> ah
12:50:46 <Toba> I'm ok with adding a really inefficient way of doing it, I think
12:50:58 <warlord> I'm not sure you'd be okay with it..
12:50:59 <Toba> like a lockfile, or something like that
12:51:05 <warlord> There is a lockfile..
12:51:23 <warlord> If you break the lockfile then you can lose data by overwriting someone else's changes.
12:51:45 <Toba> reminds me of cvs 'locks' back in the day
12:51:55 <warlord> perhaps.
12:52:33 <warlord> except cvs locks were relatively short-lived.
12:52:34 <Toba> ok, thank you for the info.
12:52:39 <Toba> now I know.
12:52:45 <Toba> which is what I wanted by coming in here :)
12:52:48 <warlord> gnucash locks are held as long as you have the file "open"
12:53:01 <warlord> (e.g., as long as you have the app running)
12:53:01 <Toba> offloading the issue to people is probably going to be workable. maybe.
12:53:12 <Toba> and iirc, gnucash can import/export quicken files yeah?
12:53:28 <warlord> Honestly, if you are large enough that you need to have multiple people entering your finances, gnucash probably isnt the right tool for you
12:53:51 <warlord> it can import QIF
12:53:56 <warlord> to export, see the FAQ..
12:53:56 <Toba> this is for a nonprofit and we all work in our spare time
12:54:02 <Toba> so it's not like we have a full time accountant
12:54:11 <Toba> if we did, then that one person could totally handle it
12:54:21 <Toba> ok, I think I get the lay of the land now.
12:54:45 <Toba> looks like there is a java tool to export to QIF if we decide we have to 'grow up' and use quicken.
12:55:22 <warlord> As long as you serialize access then you CAN have miultiple people.
12:55:46 <warlord> quicken doesn't have multi-user, either, FWIW
12:55:51 <warlord> You'd have to graduate to quickbooks..
12:56:06 <warlord> (although I'm not sure I'd consider that a step up) ;)

13:21:05 <erik__> Hi folks. I am a new user of gnucash and I noticed a couple of things that could be useful. I wanted to talk about it here before posting a feature request on the bugtracker.
13:22:03 <erik__> I imported all the transactions from my accounts and credit card to gnucash yesterday. And of course most of it appear as unbalanced-USD
13:22:35 <erik__> I had to go through every single one of them and choose the right expense account instead of unbalanced (in the transfer column)
13:23:04 <erik__> Though when sorted against description many of the entries that will go to the same expense line are groupped together
13:23:33 <erik__> for instance, I always have lunch at the same place and my bank list all these transactions similarly
13:24:01 <erik__> it would have been useful if I could "allocate" them all to the expenses:lunch account simultaneously
13:24:10 <erik__> did i miss a gnucash option or is this not possible?
13:25:51 <warlord> erik__: you should have mapped them during the import.
13:26:15 *** StuM1 has quit IRC
13:27:03 <warlord> if you used QIF import then all the transactions with the same description could have been mapped appropriately.
13:27:08 <warlord> ... at once.

15:46:46 <erik__> warlord: I see the merging window when importing from QIF files. Thanks
15:46:57 <warlord> erik__: you're welcome. :)
15:47:14 <erik__> Maybe the question is stupid, but why isn't there is a similar form when importing something else than QIF?
15:47:49 <erik__> (for instance, I do not see it with the qfx importer)
15:51:22 <warlord> the ofx/qfx/hbci/generic importer does things... differently. It's designed not for a single-use import, but rather for continual repeated imports. It learns between runs, so when you assign transactions at import 1, it will remember and apply them to import 2.
15:51:46 <warlord> QIF is more designed for a single initial import.. so the process is different.
15:52:34 <erik__> ah... are you telling me that if I had imported month by month I would not have had to tag everything? :(
15:55:16 <warlord> using qfx? Yes...
15:55:24 <warlord> it would have learned between imports.
15:55:34 <warlord> (assuming you tagged them properly within the importer)
15:58:30 <erik__> I see. Cool. Well, I'll know for next time to do that from the importer instead of fixing it later.
15:58:33 <erik__> Thanks
