09:15:39 <notam2000> are there any tools in gnucash or plugins that allow duplicating *account* subtrees (empty) (for setting up investments assets, expenses and income together) manual method is tedious and error prone
09:17:16 <notam2000> gnucash in general only allows operations on a single entity, multi-selection is so much more efficient, is that coming...ever?
09:22:15 <warlord> notam2000: File -> Export Accounts ... will create a new gnucash file with only the existing chart of accounts but sans transactions.
09:22:29 <warlord> notam2000: probably not anytime soon.
09:23:17 <warlord> As for account subtrees (sorry, misread).. You could run the File -> Account Hierarchy Druid to add new account subtrees from the templates.
09:23:28 <warlord> ... but that presupposes there is a template that matches what subtree you want.
09:30:44 <notam2000> yeah, I meant if you add individual stocks, you have to manually install leafs in two other places, repeat for 20 and that's 60 entries. One tree could be defined and then pasted in one shot. that's the idea anyway
09:32:58 <warlord> Fair enough. Right now you are right, there is no easy way to do that.
09:35:35 <notam2000> It seems like such an obvious usability feature, one wonders why it hasn't been put in. It can't be the codebase doesn't have such a capacity already (other than UI), since it supports creation and deletion of nodes etc
09:37:00 <warlord> I think its more that in the grand scheme of things, transaction entry is significantly more important than account creation. You generally create your accounts once, but transaction entry is a daily thing.
09:37:23 <notam2000> Another obvious one would be the tax category assignment, it exits every time you assign one rather than having an "apply" button so you can continue definitions.
09:37:30 <warlord> Even buying stocks, in general, is not a frequent activity.. Except perhaps a day trader, but GnuCash really isn't suited to that.
09:37:58 <warlord> I dont use that feature, but I *thought* it was a dialog that lets you set them all.
09:39:10 <notam2000> It's true the COA would generally not be dinkered with once defined, but for even a modest portfolio it could take a LONG time to add all the leaf nodes 3 times for each stock etc. Also for mistakes or other things it would be handy. *sigh*
09:40:09 <notam2000> With the tax dialog, it allows you to set as many as you want for ONE item and then "OK" will bail you out. That's fine for a running system, but not for initial configuration. (that's where I am right now, in setup mode mostly)
09:41:39 <notam2000> It's a barrier to adoption and migration mostly (I'm trying to get away from 20 years of quicken tyranny, but it has "tags" that don't import, so for every place a tag exists, it means generating new accounts in muliple subtrees)
09:43:37 <notam2000> The tag might identify a "cost center" or "business unit" so that you have duplicated trees Expenses:tag1... Expenses:tag2 etc. HUNDREDS of accounts to define
09:44:26 <notam2000> Because each business unit wants their own tracking, to be combined into a net. (Think multiple schedule C's for a sole proprietor)
09:45:16 <notam2000> But those share resources (home office, other assets etc)
09:46:26 *** benoitg has joined #gnucash
09:46:59 <notam2000> OK, I'm done... sorry for the TLDR. Gotta run, but maybe someone who knows the code base might think this could be easy (copy/paste account subtree structure)
09:47:09 *** fabior has joined #gnucash
09:47:47 <warlord> Yes, tags are definitely a feature that is often requested.
09:47:48 <notam2000> much like reassigning a parent of an account, only that it copies the underlying structure TO the new parent node, rather than just moving a pointer
09:48:08 <warlord> Note that you can create new accounts as you enter new transactions..
09:48:26 <warlord> Just type in a new name into the transfer column and when you tab out it will ask if you want to create it.
09:48:27 <notam2000> I'm happy to abandon tags, but the copy/paste account structure is needed to make it simple, and it doesn't require a new set of interfaces to do copy/paste
09:49:14 <warlord> You're welcome to submit a feature request, but honestly I doubt it'll get implemented -- there are hundreds of other reasonable feature requests sitting in the queue.
09:49:21 <notam2000> True, but when downloading hundreds, that can be hard to manage. I know it is all POSSIBLE to do it manually, but the whole point is not to have to. It's ineffecient and error prone that's all.
09:49:46 <warlord> Well, if you are importing ... the accounts will get created during the import.
09:49:59 <notam2000> Not with tags they wont
09:50:13 <notam2000> The tags get ignored
09:50:55 <warlord> True, because as I said, gnucahs does't support tags
09:50:55 <notam2000> anyway, thanks for the info I gotta run, I'll maybe poke around the code if I can ever get the time (but probably won't have it)
09:51:17 <warlord> good luck
