06:21:07 <karl> Hello everybody,
06:21:08 <karl> I do my first steps in Gnucash and am stuck now: I have created my principle accounts and introduced some transactions. Everything went fine, but now I want to add another account with a foreign currency. I can open an account and click on the button for the currency, but when I want to change the currency from CHF to EUR, Gnucash crashes without any further information.
06:21:11 <karl> I am running Gnucash 2.4.11 on Fedora Linux 17.

09:14:56 <karl> Gnucash keeps crashing when I try to set up a new account with a foreign currency. I restarted my computer, I de- and re-installes GnuCash, but both did not help. Can anyone give me a hint how I can set up a new clean installation and start with my accounting from scratch? Thanks for any answer.
09:28:56 <karl> Thanks for not responding to above question until I am back up again...

09:36:45 <warlord> karl, anything printed in /tmp/gnucash.trace when it crashes? How about on the termainal from where you ran 'gnucash'? If nothing in either place, you'll have to run under GDB to get a Stack Trace. See: http://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Stack_Trace
09:45:45 <warlord> i need to logoff in a minute..

12:26:00 <karl> I managed to clear my "memory" resp. the config with GConf Cleaner and after a re-install I could set up a new accounting table with all accounts. I hope this time, it will stay stable...

13:58:35 <Keeper_of_the_Keys> I'm looking into starting to keep track of my finances better using gnucash, and I'm hoping to not start from this moment but to actually also add old history so I can see trends etc based on my bank statements
13:59:20 <Keeper_of_the_Keys> At the moment I am trying to figure out my account structure and I was wondering does it make sense to create a separate income account for every employer?
14:11:31 <karl> I guess it depends on whether you have to report the income of each job/employer separately or not (e.g. for tax purposes). In Switzerland you have to show your primary income (main occupation) and secondary income, which suggest to have at least to income accounts.

14:37:05 <Keeper_of_the_Keys> It works similar here... I wasn't really thinking from a tax point of view, more from statistics & trends point of view because it's also just the mployers I have had in the past etc.
14:39:37 <karl> You always have the possibility to have one income account called "other employers" for the ones in the past and those who contribute less than x% of your revenue... That's at least what I would do.

16:23:56 <warlord> Keeper_of_the_Keys: I would recommend yes, you have separate accounts per employer.
16:24:02 <warlord> Income:Salary:<Employer>
16:24:57 <warlord> at least for current employers. For historical uses, I think it depends on what kinds of reporting you want. Keep in mind it's much easier to combine accounts later than it is to separate them later.

23:31:49 <lszyba1> Can Gnucash do this:
23:31:49 <lszyba1> I need to keep track of invoices at item level...so if invoice January has 10 items, 8 get paid, there are 2 outstanding. I need to know which items are outstanding...and move the 2 items to february outstanding invoice...
