08:28:50 <homes> is there a way to adjust the ordering of two transactions that happened on the same day?
08:29:00 <homes> if my account has 10$ on saturday
08:29:29 <homes> and on sunday i have 50$ as an expense, but 60$ as an income
08:29:35 *** aqua___ has joined #gnucash
08:30:12 <homes> if i enter the expense before the incoming i'd get balnces of 10$ ... -$40 ... +$20

10:26:30 <warlord> homes: Ordering is by date, Num, and then Time Entered. So just put '1' and '2' in the "Num" column to reorder during the day. Or enter your income transactions before your expense transactions.
10:27:01 <warlord> homes: another option is to duplicate the expense transaction, set the same day, and then delete the original one. This should reset the 'time entered' field.

13:05:33 <brianhallas> I'm new to gnucash and have created 3 different accounts, but now, regardless of which one i try to open, it only opens the last account i worked on a few weeks ago. anyone have any toughts as to how to get around this dilemma?

13:17:52 <warlord> brianhallas: so when you have your file open and you click on any account in the Accounts Page, it always opens up the same one?!?
13:19:50 <brianhallas> thanks, warlord, for replying. the other files don't appear in the list, but i have foldersful of data relating to the accounts.
13:21:20 <warlord> brianhallas: in what "list" do they not appear?
13:21:48 <brianhallas> the accounts list
13:21:58 <warlord> So you mean you created three different "files", not three different "accounts"? An account is just an entry in your datafile, and a datafile can contain many many accounts.
13:22:11 <warlord> GnuCash doesn't work across multiple files.
13:22:18 <brianhallas> ugh
13:22:56 <brianhallas> so the entries i made in the other two accounts are no inaccessible?
13:22:58 <warlord> Think about it like a spreadsheet. You can have multiple spreadsheets in different files, but you cannot link data between them
13:23:15 <brianhallas> i understand…excellent analogy
13:23:19 <warlord> I have no idea, because the word your using doesn't make any sense.
13:23:34 <warlord> an "account" in gnucash is like a spreadsheet page.
13:23:50 <brianhallas> which word is that? not masking sense here doesn't surprise me…
13:23:54 <warlord> it has a bunch of transaction entries, and a transaction links >= 2 accounts as you move money between them
13:24:02 <brianhallas> i see
13:24:04 <warlord> your use of "account" isn't making sense
13:24:12 <warlord> Have you read the GnUCash Concepts & Tutorial Guide?
13:24:28 <brianhallas> i understand now regarding "accounts"
13:24:33 <warlord> If not, I *HIGHLY* recommend you take some time to read it. It'll save you lots of time, energy, and hopefully frustration!
13:24:48 <brianhallas> i'm sure you're right…
13:25:11 <warlord> The only reason to have multiple files is if you are accounting for multiple taxable entities (e.g. you would store your personal finances in one file, and your business finances in another file)
13:25:36 <warlord> Each file would contain the full set of accounts used by that entity (bank accounts, credit cards, loans, incomes, expenses)
13:25:48 <brianhallas> what i tried to do was create a new "account for my checking account, one for my cash expenses and one for my credit card. the credit card information is the only infor that comes up, ever.
13:26:17 <warlord> Yeah, you did it wrong.
13:26:20 <warlord> You should start over.
13:26:21 <warlord> (sorry)
13:26:29 <brianhallas> oh swell…
13:26:30 <brianhallas> lol
13:26:35 <warlord> GnuCash will re-open the last file you had open.
13:26:41 <brianhallas> i get it
13:26:47 <brianhallas> unfortunately
13:26:52 <warlord> BUt if you created a new file for each account then you did it wrong and unfortunately there's not a good way to recover
13:27:10 *** spm_Draget has joined #gnucash
13:27:54 <spm_Draget> gnucash can save its data inside a database like mysql oder postgresql. But it locks the whole database - no concurrent client can use it if I understood it correctly.
13:28:47 <brianhallas> i know the manual will tell me (though i found it INCREDIBLY difficult to read and comprehend), but perhaps you'll be kind enough to say whether i start within the existing page or do i need to start over entirely?
13:29:00 <brianhallas> i REALLY appreciate all this guidance…
13:31:14 <spm_Draget> I wanted to use a database for the reason to use gnucash on two PCs (desktop, laptop). I will never work on both on the same time. But chances are, that the laptop inbetween (on trips) is occasionally without network connection. Without net, I will be completely unable to use gnucash then if my data is on a postgres database server, correct? So I might be better of with saving it locally and a little sync-script to sync the file
13:31:14 <spm_Draget> over to my other desktop instead of using *sql, correct?

13:43:34 <warlord> brianhallas: That's up to you. Depends how much data you already entered, but it might be easier to truely start from scratch, File -> New File, choose a good template account hierarchy, and go from there.
13:43:59 <warlord> spm_Draget: correct, if you are offline then you cannot use it. You would be better off just putting your data file on a USB stick.
13:44:06 <warlord> (or copying it back-and-forth0
13:44:46 <spm_Draget> Okay, thanks.
13:45:18 <brianhallas> Thanks so much, Warlord. You've been a big help!
13:45:31 <warlord> you're welcome, brianhallas
13:45:33 <warlord> good luck
13:46:42 <brianhallas> fingers crossed! bye for now.
