05:02:55 <asqui> Hello, I've been using GNUCash for a few years now and I have a couple of bugbears that I was wondering how to solve.
05:04:24 <asqui> 1. I've accumulated a large number of 'closed' accounts which are no longer in use and normally (but not always) have a zero balance. Although I've eliminated these from the main Accounts view by marking them as 'Hidden', they still show up in the accounts dropdown, where there is nothing indicating that they are 'Hidden'.
05:05:18 <asqui> Is there some way to mark an account 'Closed', such that it disappears from the Accounts list and all account drop-downs in the transaction register, and also prevents new transactions accidentally being entered for these accounts (e.g. via scheduled transactions)?
05:06:23 <asqui> 2. Speed -- with the gradual growth of my database the speed of startup and report generation in GNUCash has slowed significantly. I switched to the new database storage format but that doesn't seem to have made much of a difference. Are there any suggestions for keeping GNUCash fast as you accumulate more and more historical data?
05:07:46 <asqui> (For clarity, I'm using the sqlite3 storage format -- the data file has a *.gnucash extension.)
05:24:58 <MacCoaster> asqui: I can't answer #1, but #2, I basically make new files for each year. 2011.gnucash, 2012.gnucash, and so on. Seems to work for me.
05:26:08 <asqui> So do you set up all your accounts and recurring transactions anew each year?
05:27:04 <MacCoaster> asqui: yes, but all I do is copy and paste the file and delete transactions and simply set up a new opening balance
05:27:18 <MacCoaster> or something like that
05:27:41 <asqui> Delete all the transactions in all of the individual accounts?! That sounds labour intensive!!
05:28:10 <asqui> labor, even
05:29:16 <MacCoaster> heh, the secret is the gnucash file format :)
05:29:34 <MacCoaster> I just make a script to do that.

08:47:46 <warlord> asqui: for #1 set the accounts as Placeholder accounts, this will mark them read-only and they will stop showing up in the dropdowns.
08:48:36 <warlord> asqui: SQL is not going to be any faster than XML for report generation, and might even be slower than XML because gnucash is doing extra work.
08:48:45 <warlord> Just get a faster computer with more RAM ;)

11:20:32 <forcer> Hello! Is there a way to enable liability accounts to be created under equity accounts, or the other way around? Or to create a new account type that allows both?
11:21:23 *** fell has joined #gnucash
11:21:23 *** gncbot sets mode: +o fell
11:30:45 <forcer> Hm. Seems that's hardcoded in engine/Account.c. If I change that, will something break horribly?
11:34:17 <warlord> It would just be wrong.
11:34:21 <warlord> Liability isn;t equity.
11:34:55 <warlord> .. and you would have to always run your own modified version of gnucash. such a patch would not be accepted.
11:35:01 *** Krzysiek_K1 has joined #gnucash
11:36:39 <forcer> Well, strictly speaking what I want is a new account type "Passiva" (German financial term) which allows both liability and equity. I just figured adding a whole new account type would be more effort. And yeah, this is just for me, I have no problem running only my own modified gnu cash.
11:38:25 <forcer> In one of my files, I created a number of "mostly independent" account trees for different purposes, using a single file mainly because they all share one bank account. Is there a conceptual reason why there is no "accept anything" type of account to create independent hierarchies in the same file?
11:38:33 <warlord> Yeah, I know what you want. Take a look at the SKR-04 acocunt tree.
11:39:51 <warlord> Well, that's another thing. Indepentent trees shouldn't exist in the same file.
11:40:20 <forcer> Yeah, it's another thing, sorry for jumping around :-) Looking at the SKR 04 one now.
11:41:15 <forcer> And yes, they're "mostly independent" - they are two different things, but they share one bank account, which is why I put them in the same file. :-/

11:42:43 <forcer> Oh, he does, no worries about that. It's not two different businesses, all private stuff.

11:43:53 <forcer> Hm. The SKR04 hierarchy seems to simply use liability for the equity ("Eigenkapital") account. Well, that works.
11:57:56 <warlord> ok
11:58:16 <forcer> Oh.
11:58:23 <forcer> warlord: Thank you for all the help. :-)
