17:01:26 <lorenz571> how to change the language of gnucash to english on windows?
17:02:47 *** YeOldHinnerk has joined #gnucash
17:02:54 <YeOldHinnerk> Hi
17:03:05 <YeOldHinnerk> I have some questions about the loan assitant.
17:03:53 <YeOldHinnerk> I seems to me, that it assumes, that the loan is completely paid back over the runtime.
17:04:02 <YeOldHinnerk> What do you do if not?
17:04:15 <YeOldHinnerk> Or more precisely:
17:04:28 <YeOldHinnerk> Assume that the last rate is different - can you enter this somehow?
17:05:00 <YeOldHinnerk> Also, can the assitant automatically generate two bookings, for interest and actual paying back?

17:12:56 <lorenz571> how do i sum the income / expenses of a month in a report?
17:13:37 <lorenz571> is there a way to report sub accounts?
17:16:00 <lorenz571> hmm "journal" seem promising?
17:16:11 <Joc1> lorenz571: the info to set the language can be found at http://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Locale_Settings, If you are running GnuCash 2.4.0 (or newer) on Windows, you can set the interface language by editing the file environment. By default this file is installed in c:\\Program Files\gnucash\etc\gnucash. Change this file such that the last few lines are:
17:17:57 <lorenz571> thx Joc1 :-)
17:26:00 *** aqua___ has quit IRC
17:26:44 <Joc1> lorenz571: I'm no expert, but you can use sums of any accounts and of any period if you have the "accounts" tab selected, and click on "report" and "transaction report", click on "edit retports options", with the verious tabs you can select lots of choices.
17:30:55 <Joc1> you can also set the accounting period, select "edit" and "preference" and then enter the accounting period.
17:31:46 <lorenz571> Joc1: yes, this will probably work thx :-)
17:32:45 <Joc1> welcome
17:37:53 <YeOldHinnerk> so is there a way to include a remaining principle in a loan?

18:09:03 <warlord> lorenz571: Best way -- set your system to English. If that's not sufficient, see http://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Locale_Settings
18:10:01 <warlord> YeOldHinnerk: I don't understand.. When you pay back a loan you are paying Principal AND Interest with one payment. I don't understand what you mean by "two bookings" or why you might want such a thing.
18:10:23 <warlord> lorenz571: Run a P&L and set the dates to the month begin/end in the report options?
18:11:02 <warlord> YeOldHinnerk: what do you mean by "include a remaining principle"?
18:12:45 <YeOldHinnerk> ah.
18:13:07 <YeOldHinnerk> assume I have a loan where the last rate is significantly higher.
18:13:16 <warlord> What do you mean by "last rate"?
18:13:23 <YeOldHinnerk> the last payment
18:13:26 <warlord> You can change the rate over time. That's what an "ARM" is.
18:13:34 <warlord> Do you mean a baloon payment?
18:13:36 <YeOldHinnerk> ARM?
18:14:07 <YeOldHinnerk> Let's make an example:
18:14:19 <warlord> ARM: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adjustable-rate_mortgage
18:14:40 <YeOldHinnerk> Say I have a loan, where I pay monthly 100 EUR.
18:14:48 <YeOldHinnerk> Last payment is 2000 EUR.
18:14:57 <YeOldHinnerk> Part of the payment is interest.
18:15:17 <YeOldHinnerk> The amount of interest depends on how much is still outstanding
18:15:39 <YeOldHinnerk> So I would like to book properly the reduction of the outstanding principle and the interest.
18:16:35 <YeOldHinnerk> ARM is something different.

18:20:00 <YeOldHinnerk> does this make sense to you?
18:20:15 <YeOldHinnerk> I'm not sure if i'm explaining this well
18:34:38 <warlord> Sounds like a baloon payment to me.
18:35:03 <warlord> Something like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balloon_payment_mortgage
18:35:05 <warlord> YeOldHinnerk: ?
18:37:44 <lorenz571> yay, i managed to do what i want to do with gnucash (so far) -- nice software :-)

18:56:06 <YeOldHinnerk> mom
18:58:35 <YeOldHinnerk> right, it is a bloon payment
18:58:42 <YeOldHinnerk> baloon
19:03:04 <warlord> Yeah, I dont think gnucash really supports that all that well.
19:04:49 <warlord> You might be able to tell it to specify a non-zero "ending" balance..
19:05:44 <YeOldHinnerk> are you? I didn't see anything where i could enter this
19:06:15 <YeOldHinnerk> oh well, anyway, time for bed for me... thank you for your help.
