00:33:16 <dillip> hi, i have small doubt in entering transaction in gnu cash? can anyone help
00:34:49 <jmd> dillip: Only if you tell us the problem.
00:35:52 <dillip> when i'm entering my income in asset as cash in wallet, it showing nil in balance
00:36:43 <jmd> That's possible.
00:38:03 <dillip> why its showing like that? because i gave 500 in cash in wallet. i spend 50 from that. Now it showing -50
00:39:28 <jmd> When it is first created, it has a balance of nil. If you transfer 500 to it, it then has a balance of 500. If you then transfer 50 from it, it should have a balance of 450.
00:40:15 <dillip> ok thank you so much. i'll do once again

09:03:05 <YeOldHinnerk> Hi, anyone awake?
09:03:25 <YeOldHinnerk> I'm trying to configure a stocks account.
09:03:42 <YeOldHinnerk> I use the lastest gnucash version 2.4.10.1 under windows.
09:03:50 <YeOldHinnerk> I created an account marked as stock account.
09:04:14 <YeOldHinnerk> I looked up the proper symbol from yahoo finance, including the market.
09:04:49 <YeOldHinnerk> I entered it as described in the field Security/currency
09:05:05 <YeOldHinnerk> The tutorial mentions a "Look up prices online"-Checkbox
09:05:10 <YeOldHinnerk> That i can't find.
09:05:22 <YeOldHinnerk> Am I missing something obvious?
09:10:26 <YeOldHinnerk> ok, got it now
09:10:49 <YeOldHinnerk> I guess the tutorial and the current version have - at least in german - slightly different names ...
09:12:19 <YeOldHinnerk> other question, also on stocks.
09:12:27 <YeOldHinnerk> how do you book this properly?
09:12:43 <YeOldHinnerk> I booked my inital stock position with aquisition costs.
09:13:01 <YeOldHinnerk> But my account for equity shows the current market value.
09:13:35 <YeOldHinnerk> Therefore, a profit or loss should be booked everytime the stock changes price?
09:13:42 <YeOldHinnerk> Or how do you deal with this?
09:14:14 <YeOldHinnerk> Or should one install a proper book vs market value accounting?
09:14:35 <YeOldHinnerk> Then, where do you account for the market value, if your stock account only shows aquisition costs?
09:15:45 <YeOldHinnerk> Should you have something like an accrued profit account that contains the difference of book to market and then when you actually realize the gain, book the profit against this additional account?
09:17:33 <YeOldHinnerk> Ideas welcome...

09:41:28 *** fell__ is now known as fell
09:43:08 <fell> YeOldHinnerk: The german translation of the docs is still incomplete - volunteers are always welcome.
09:44:52 <fell> You have read http://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/De/Aktienhandel ?
09:46:58 <YeOldHinnerk> yes, that's the tutorial i'm talking about :)
09:47:08 <YeOldHinnerk> I think I'm starting to get the hang of it
09:47:19 <YeOldHinnerk> still not sure how to book it properly though
09:47:31 <YeOldHinnerk> also, I have a problem with one stock that denots in USD
09:47:39 <YeOldHinnerk> while everything else i have is EUR
09:47:54 <YeOldHinnerk> EUR is also configured as my home currency
09:48:16 <YeOldHinnerk> In the main account view, I see the USD stock account with a EUR value of 0.

09:51:21 <YeOldHinnerk> Hm, maybe I will just switch to a german sotck exchange where it is denoted in EUR...
09:53:05 <fell> If that exists, shure. which ISIN?
09:54:39 <YeOldHinnerk> WPI Watson Pharma
09:55:04 <YeOldHinnerk> you are right, I don't see other stock exchanges in europe listed at yahoo finance
09:55:08 <YeOldHinnerk> hm
09:56:28 <YeOldHinnerk> I certainly can trade it at european stock exchanges

09:58:10 <YeOldHinnerk> cool, thank you!
10:00:37 <YeOldHinnerk> so, now remains the question how to book the changes in market value
10:00:48 <YeOldHinnerk> i wouldn't want to do this manually each day...

10:03:07 <fell> You should never book a pending result!
10:03:48 <fell> Only if you sell you realize a profit or loss.
10:05:37 <fell> Most reports will show you the unrealized gains. For details use Erweitertes Portefolio.
10:11:09 <YeOldHinnerk> sorry, got to go, but would lvoe to continue the discussion another time.
10:11:09 <YeOldHinnerk> thank you for your help.

12:38:46 <pnema> question on importing Quickbooks. The files from QB I have are .QBW or .QBB or .QBM. Can I import these into GunCash?
12:39:15 <pnema> I don't see any of those as options for import. Only QIF
12:41:19 <fell> pnema: http://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/FAQ#Q:_How_do_I_import_my_data_from_Quickbooks.28TM.29.3F
12:41:56 <pnema> fell: thanks for breaking my heart :(
12:42:06 <pnema> BUT appreciate the quick answer :)
12:42:31 <pnema> Well that sucks. THANKS QuickBooks!
12:43:22 <fell> Open QB; export to CSV ...
12:43:30 <pnema> ok I'll do the CSV route. Not the best but will get me there. Sucks QB made their file closed and proprietary
12:45:04 <pnema> Don't know if any GnuCash programmers are here, But thanks for developing a great application!
12:47:19 <fell> Welcome in the name of the channel ops and the other devs.
12:50:15 <pnema> fell: some other newbee questions if you all don't mind. When exporting from QB to csv, will everything I need from QB, be exported? Account structure, all transactions, and what ever else GnuCash requires?
12:52:27 <fell> I never used QB. So I don't know their export functions. Probably somebody else here or on the gnucash-user mailing list knows more.
12:53:46 <pnema> ok thanks, I'll rtfm (or rtf-google) first.
12:54:31 <fell> It was more than a decade ago, when I switched from windows and other closed source software to linux and FOSS.
