04:12:07 <utopiah> hi again
04:13:11 <utopiah> so ING in Belgium does not have any API/HCBI/whatever and not even export functions (except if you pay 85e per month) so Im curious if there is a page on the wiki or somewhere else about GreaseMonkey or scrapping alternatives?

06:19:18 *** Arafangion has joined #gnucash
06:19:38 <utopiah> (for the curious I called ING and they wont support it in the near futur, DB maybe early 2013 and overall they do not know who does support it now in Belgium)
06:21:32 <Arafangion> utopiah: Sorry, joined in mid-convo... What feature are you talking about?
06:22:21 <utopiah> Arafangion: just that Im in Belgium and Im looking for a way to (at least) import data from my bank account it seems none of the bank allow it
06:22:43 <Arafangion> Ah, I see. :)
06:23:05 <Arafangion> They don't even export to files?
06:23:11 <utopiah> guess Ill have to move to the US...
06:23:25 <utopiah> they can for an extra 85e/year
06:23:31 <utopiah> (ING)

07:52:51 <Tavin> Hello there, I have some basic questions
07:53:00 <Tavin> anyone can spare a few seconds?
07:55:12 <Tavin> Question one: I manged to get online banking working- my question is do I have to sort all by hand or can I set filters or something? So I can e.g. but all bookings from the food store to the right account
08:01:36 * utopiah is listening carrefuly to the answer
08:36:25 *** Jimraehl has quit IRC
08:40:52 * Arafangion is listening less carefully, but with the interest of a 12-year-old.
08:42:59 <Tavin> or at leat a method of using some kind of autokomplete instead of the dropdown menu every single time
08:44:27 <Arafangion> You can type part-way, and then hit tab, it'll usually complete up to the colon, if any.
08:44:34 <Arafangion> At least, from what I've seen so far.
08:45:19 *** GabrieleV has joined #gnucash
08:51:52 <Tavin> so no filter feature?
08:53:51 <Arafangion> Tavin: There might be, but neither utopiah nor I know, and I'm too tired to check the documentation myself, sorry! :)
09:00:18 <Tavin> okay, maybe a way to change several bookings at the same time?
09:00:44 <Arafangion> I only do the bare basics with gnucash, really.'
09:00:51 <Tavin> mkay
09:00:57 <Tavin> thanks anyways
09:01:09 <utopiah> Tavin: there is a website that does sth like that but only for US/Canada
09:04:16 <utopiah> cf http://budgetable.com

09:59:26 <warlord> utopiah: sorry, if the bank doesn't provide the service there is nothing we can do. However,I can assure you that I've been using GnuCash for many years and I never use the import function.
10:00:17 <warlord> Ah well,tavin logged out...
10:07:30 <utopiah> warlord: yes it was not directly a GnuCash question, more for the user community
10:08:09 <utopiah> maybe Im just looking for excuses to procrastinate my accounting ;)
10:11:53 <warlord> Maybe. But there is no requirement that you must use online banking.
10:12:39 <utopiah> would just avoid most of the data entry
10:25:53 *** ErKa has joined #gnucash
10:26:46 <warlord> At the expense of no longer being able to find bank errors.
10:36:01 * utopiah is quite naive
10:37:48 <warlord> Heh. Well, the point of entering in your receipts locally and then validating them against the bank statement is to try to track down not only errors in your data entry but also errors the bank may have made.
10:38:03 <warlord> if you only import your data then you lose the ability to notice bank errors.
10:41:20 *** myii has joined #gnucash
10:43:57 <myii> Hi, I just upgraded on WinXP from version 2.28 to 2.4.10 and when I've opened my accounts, all of the dates are exactly one day behind what I originally typed in (all the way back to when I started using GnuCash in 2006). For example, instead of being 14/09/2010, I'm now seeing 13/09/2010 and so on. Any ideas as to what needs doing to correct the dates?
10:49:10 <warlord> myii: fix your system timezone to be the timezone you used when you entered your data
10:52:24 <myii> OK, that could be it... let me just try that. Another question while I'm gone: is there a way to set my new timezone instead?
10:52:55 <warlord> No, the data is stored with the old timezone; there is no tool to fix that at this time
10:56:37 <myii> Right, that worked - thanks.
10:58:00 <warlord> You are welcome
11:01:08 <myii> While searching through the preferences, I noticed that there is a "Use 24-hour time format" setting... where does the time format actually apply?

18:30:46 <jonny> my Chart of Accounts (so far) as follows: 1000 Assets; 2000 Liabilities; 3000 Equity; 4000 Revenue; 6000 Expenses. Where do one put Cost of Goods?
18:33:28 <jonny> or anyone's got suggestion for a more efficient/logical layout and Account Codes of the CoA?
18:33:57 <warlord> jonny: I think your account codes are going to be defined by locale or personal preference. Personally I don't use account codes with GnuCash
18:34:03 <warlord> I see no need for them
18:46:05 <jonny> warlord: I see, been looking for a recognized/standardized way to put together a CoA that conforms to what a CPA would use
18:48:37 <warlord> Sure. I'm not a CPA. But GnuCash provides shortcuts to access any account in the hierarchy. So for example I can type: e x : u t : e l <tab> to get to Expenses:Utilities:Electrical. No need to remember some abstract number.
18:52:39 <jonny> Good point - simplify the workflow!
18:54:26 <jonny> In that case I guess I'll simply organize my Cost of Goods entries under Expenses?
19:03:13 <warlord> I think that's where it belongs, but IANAA
19:16:20 <jonny> Got it! Thanks for the reminder of shortcut strings to drill down the account hierarchy. Interestingly, the book "Gnucash 2.4 Small Business Accounting" [A. Ramachandran] only briefly mentions the usage of Account Codes. Perhaps easier to skip 'em altogether.
