10:44:00 <Toby> Hello
10:48:55 <Toby> I experienced hard time when installing GNUCash on Mac, and its default font does not support Unicode
10:49:23 <Toby> thus all characters are not able to display correctly under non-english locale
10:58:35 *** gour1 is now known as gour
11:04:50 <Toby> can someone help me?

17:24:18 <Rachel> I just downloaded Gnucash for the first time and I'm having ....issues. I imported data from Quicken and I'm not really crazy about the results, but I'll ask for help with that if we can solve my issue with updating prices of stocks/funds. I downloaded and installed activeperl 5.14.2 and I get error messages when I try to install online price retrieval. Is this because of the version of
17:24:19 <Rachel> activeperl I installed? I can't figure out how to install the earlier versions that reportedly work without paying for them. Help!
17:35:51 <kpreid> Rachel: I probably won't be able to help you, but let's start with fundamental troubleshooting. What are the error messages?
17:38:23 <Rachel> *Check Perl 'perl' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. Did not find a usable perl. Please install ActivePerl 5.8 or above and add the bin directory to your Path environment variable.
17:39:58 <kpreid> OK, did you do the second part of that instruction?
17:40:25 <kpreid> ActivePerl should probably have some more detailed explanation of how to do that along with its installation instructions.
17:40:33 <Rachel> I have no idea what that means and never saw how to do that in any of the instructions
17:41:27 <Rachel> it would be in the activeperl instructions? I'll start looking there.
17:41:32 <kpreid> I'm not a Windows user so I don't have the details myself, sorry. ActivePerl really should have that in its installation docs.
17:44:00 <Rachel> Well thanks for trying then....here's what I found:
17:44:22 <Rachel> If you run Perl at the command prompt, the script will be executed by the first Perl.exe it encounters in the list of paths in the PATH environment variable. To ensure the script is executed by the Perl interpreter of your choice, specify the complete path to the Perl.exe you want to use. (Typing perl -v at the command prompt will tell you which version of Perl is currently first in your PATH)
17:44:22 <Rachel> Installing ActivePerl will change your Path environment variable and may change registry settings, such as file associations, which may affect your Web server. If you want to use a previously installed copy of Perl, you will need to modify these settings.
17:44:22 <Rachel> ftype PerlScript=perl.exe %1 %*
17:44:24 <Rachel> assoc .pl=PerlScript
17:45:00 <kpreid> OK, so that is saying that the installation should have done it automatically (the first sentence), and the rest of it is irrelevant to your case.
17:45:24 <Rachel> i'm glad YOU understood that!
17:46:01 <kpreid> I'm out of ideas. I suggest waiting for someone else to speak up or trying the gnucash mailing list later...
17:46:12 <Rachel> Would it matter that I tried to install one version (64bit) and it told me I was wrong so then I installed a different version?
17:46:25 <kpreid> (this isn't a gnucash problem per se but config issues for its deps seem to be on-topic)
17:46:43 <kpreid> No, that text implies the latest will take precedence.
17:47:05 <Rachel> okay, well thanks a lot for trying to help me!

19:03:51 <warlord> Toby: I don't know if john saw your question? He should be able to answer.
19:05:14 <warlord> Rachel: are you sure that PERL is in your PATH?
19:05:31 <warlord> someone else had this issue on win7 the other day, and adding the PERL bin-path to the PATH environment solved it.
19:05:55 <john> I don't see any questions from Toby in my transcript.
19:12:14 <warlord> john: check the logs from 10:44-11:04 EDT today. Asking about Unicode in non-enligh locale on Mac.
19:26:37 <john> Ah, we had that come up in Gramps a few weeks ago. A large chunk of the problem is that Pango doesn't yet support font fallback on quartz.
19:28:05 <john> The solution is to set the default font in Gnucash.app/Contents/Resources/etc/gtk-2.0/gtkrc to something that works for you. Anything you find in FontBook.app should work.
19:28:17 <warlord> Toby: did you see that?
19:28:21 * warlord has to run
19:28:23 *** warlord is now known as warlord-afk
19:29:16 <john> Toby: To set a default font, add the following:
19:29:28 <john> style "user-font"
19:29:30 <john> {
19:29:57 <john> font_name="Arial Unicode MS"
19:29:59 <john> }
19:30:15 <john> widget_class "*" style "user-font"
19:31:32 <john> I should probably set that as the default font; it has glyphs for everything except Hebrew.

21:32:34 <Rachel> How can I find out if PERL is in my PATH??
21:59:06 <Rachel> ok...figured that out. I found this under PATH in system variables: C:\Perl\site\bin;C:\Perl\bin;%SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem;C:\Program Files\Common Files\Roxio Shared\DLLShared\;C:\Program Files\Common Files\Roxio Shared\10.0\DLLShared\;%SYSTEMROOT%\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\
