12:59:07 <Plouj> hey
12:59:10 <Plouj> umm
12:59:29 <Plouj> so sometimes I pay for people's things and later they pay me back
13:00:14 <Plouj> I'm wondering if it would be better for generating reports (make it simpler) for me to just delete both of the involved transactions since they cancel each other out
13:00:56 <Plouj> as it stands, the purchase appears as an expense for me and the reimbursement appears as income, which I think inflates my income reports
13:00:58 <indigo> you could create an asset account for money owed to you
13:01:12 <Plouj> how would I use that?
13:01:31 <Plouj> would I make all purchases not for me withdraw money from that account?
13:01:31 <indigo> when you buy something for someone, you transfer money from say, cash in wallet, to that account
13:01:46 <indigo> no, you withdraw money from wherever you withdraw the money
13:01:51 <indigo> your wallet, checking acct, etc
13:02:01 <Plouj> ok
13:02:04 <indigo> then you debit an account you make for that friend, or whatever
13:02:08 <indigo> it's called "accounts receivable"
13:02:13 <warlord> Plouj: when you buy something for someone it's Cash -> Assets:OtherPerson. When they pay you it's the reverse: A:OP -> Cash
13:02:42 <indigo> i have a placeholder account called "A/R", and subaccounts for each person that's ever borrowed money from me
13:02:52 <Plouj> oh
13:03:02 <Plouj> no other transactions?
13:03:20 <Plouj> I don't need to create separate transactions involving the account representing the store where I'm buying somethin?
13:06:19 *** ErKa has quit IRC
13:06:26 <warlord> Plouj: well, I suppose you could if you really wanted to, but generally you can put that info into the transaction description.
13:06:37 <Plouj> oh
13:07:46 <Plouj> I'm just thinking what I would do since I import my transactions from bank's files (qfx?) which automatically creates transactions with particular stores' accounts based on the names or some other logic
13:11:38 <indigo> if you enter a transaction before you do the import, the importer will realize this and not make a new transaction
13:13:45 <warlord> Plouj: stop importing from QIF
13:13:55 <warlord> (is what I would do.. but I dont use the importers)
13:14:43 <warlord> indigo: only if in the importer you map it appropriately, which you probably wont be able to do because the QIF will say it's an Expense where you want to treat it like an asset transfer.
13:15:46 <indigo> i don't have that problem, but i import from OFX.
13:16:16 <indigo> i import weekly, and unless i've lost a receipt, it never makes new transactions but rather marks the existing transactions as cleared.
13:18:03 <Plouj> I might be importing from OFX or something too, I don't remember :)
13:18:17 <Plouj> warlord: importing in general is the only way I could keep up with all the purchases I make
13:18:39 <Plouj> warlord: ideally I'd do this every week(end), but sometimes I get busy and end up having a whole month of transactions to go through
13:19:03 <Plouj> warlord: even with importing, which helps me "remember" all transactions, it's still a lot of work
13:19:20 <Plouj> if I were to manually look at the bank statements and type that stuff in, I'd go crazy
13:19:55 <Plouj> it's no wonder Windows financial apps have features that let you create transactions automatically by scanning receipts
13:20:14 <Plouj> less manual work helps make less mistakes
13:20:21 <jsled> not sure what it has to do with windows, but yeah
13:20:41 <Plouj> are there non-windows apps that do the same?
13:21:29 <jsled> I'm not sure. frankly, I'm not sure of any specific apps that do that
13:21:55 <Plouj> it might be a plugin that you get when you buy a receipt scanner :)
13:22:05 <Plouj> I was only told about this second hand
13:22:15 <indigo> neatreceipts does it on mac
13:22:36 <indigo> though i've never seen it as very accurate
13:24:39 <warlord> how many transactions are you talking about?
13:25:07 <Plouj> two screen full :)
13:25:24 <warlord> so 40 transactions a month?
13:25:26 <Plouj> I have 4 different bank accounts
13:25:36 <Plouj> yeah, lets say 40
13:26:30 <Plouj> and by the end of the month I have a small shoebox full of receipts to go through :)
13:27:48 <warlord> 40txns per month? That's peanuts. That's like, one per day.l
13:27:54 <warlord> 10 per week.
13:28:16 <warlord> It takes 5-10 minutes to enter 10 txns, if you do it every weekend.
13:30:41 *** ErKa has joined #gnucash
13:51:03 <Plouj> sometimes I'm so busy on the weekend that I'm too tired to even think about finances

13:57:08 <indigo> i enter my expenses every day, when i come home. open the wallet, remove receipts, enter, throw away or file. it has the added bonus of letting me know my account balance each day so i don't overdraw it.
13:58:18 <indigo> then at the end of the week, i download an OFX from the bank and import it with gnucash. If i've entered all my receipts correctly, the importer determines that it shouldn't create new transactions.
13:59:02 <indigo> if you only entered transactions for things you bought for other people, i suspect it would notice those too, and only make new expenses for things you didn't enter
13:59:51 <indigo> of course you also wouldn't notice if someone stole your credit card number, or the bank made an error, or there was an automatic transaction you didn't expect, etc.
14:00:03 *** kpreid has joined #gnucash
14:02:54 <warlord> Plouj: you're so busy you can't find 5-10 minutes?
14:03:03 <Plouj> no, I'm just not organized and lazy
14:03:09 <warlord> indigo: I do that, too.
14:03:16 <warlord> Plouj: well, perhaps you should fix THAT
14:03:25 <Plouj> I'm sure I have 10 spare minutes
14:03:49 <warlord> Well, then, take those 10 minutes to enter in your txns
14:04:24 <Plouj> I think it takes me a long time to switch between tasks
14:04:42 <Plouj> unless someone else is telling me exactly what to do and is keeping track of my time
14:05:01 <indigo> Plouj: enter your receipts
14:05:09 <indigo> like that?
14:05:17 <Plouj> I'd get distracted by the browser between the time I sit down in front of the laptop and the time when I open gnucash
14:05:33 <indigo> firewall outgoing port 80.
14:05:36 <Plouj> hahah
14:05:51 <Plouj> then I'd have to unfirewall it for going to the bank
14:06:07 <indigo> you wouldn't have to go to the bank, because you would have entered your transactions.
14:06:07 <Plouj> or somethign else will distract me
14:06:13 <indigo> you can wait until they mail you a statement.
14:06:27 <Plouj> I mean bank website, sorry
14:06:37 <indigo> you don't need their website
14:07:12 <Plouj> you're probably right
14:14:53 <Plouj> oh
14:15:04 <Plouj> most of the time it can't be 10 minutes
14:15:17 <Plouj> because once I start entering transactions I find something wrong with my account setup
14:15:39 <Plouj> so I spend an hour trying to figure/fix out the problem then I realize it's going to take to long and leave it till later
14:16:13 <Plouj> or at least, I just start _thinking_ about possible solutions
14:16:28 <Plouj> but in the end, more than 10 minutes gets spent and I don't get much done
14:16:49 <Plouj> so the current solution is to allot a bit more time for these unexpected delays

17:07:37 <gary> Hi. If I created a tax tax that had two entries. One a percentage of 12.275%, the other of 2.225%. Should I expect an entry on an invoice that's taxable, using this tax table, to have 17.5% (12.275+2.225) tax on it?
17:07:50 <gary> Bah, tax tax = tax table
17:16:23 * gary hrms. so it does.
17:16:25 <warlord> yes
17:16:36 * gary wonders wtf happened the first time I created this tax table
17:16:52 <warlord> dunno
17:17:07 <gary> It definitely didn't = 17.5% the first time. Unless I typo'd and then managed to miss the typo when I checked again

18:33:41 <Plouj> warlord-afk: are you and indigo talking about the same thing/approach?
18:46:38 *** ErKa has joined #gnucash
18:52:05 <indigo> Plouj: probably.
18:52:33 <indigo> Plouj: there's the "business" features that has a thing called accounts receivable, which probably isn't too helpful for you unless you are actually running a business.
18:53:13 <indigo> the concept is still the same, though. Money owed to you is an asset.
18:54:04 <fell> It is useful, if there is a delay between invoicing and payment.
18:57:19 <Plouj> I don't invoice my family and friends :)

22:48:00 <Plouj> so does creating a/r accounts for people to whom I lend money going to improve my income/expense reporting?
22:48:22 <Plouj> automatically or by making it easier for me to deselect those transactions from reporting?
22:48:57 <Plouj> I found that the income/expenses bar chart displays way inflated values but I don't know exactly which account contributes to that
