03:29:52 <Mike1> lupine_85: how are they different from normal wage?
03:49:18 *** Mike1 has quit IRC
04:04:55 <lupine_85> well, the value of the account can go up as well as down, fairly arbitrarily
04:05:10 <lupine_85> and they're not actually wages, or part of my salary - the employer contributes the money directly

10:03:16 <Mike1> hi
10:03:25 <Mike1> btw: why are you on gimp and not on Freenode?
10:07:42 <jsled> always have been, inertia, &c.
10:07:59 *** warlord-afk is now known as warlord
10:24:44 <Mike1> just wondered, because I can’t see any relationship between gnucash and gimp ;-)
10:25:51 <jsled> at the time, well, freenode wasn't nearly as well known, but irc.gimp.org was the hub of a lot of gnome-ecosystem projects
10:53:24 <warlord> gimp.org used to be called gnome.org
10:53:58 <warlord> and gtk == gimp toolkit ;)

11:11:53 <Mike1> gnucash is so complex =(
11:13:54 *** mwhipple has joined #gnucash
11:14:09 <warlord> accounting is complex.
11:14:19 <warlord> gnucash is featureful.
11:14:54 <indigo> speaking of featureful
11:15:17 <indigo> i've been trying to figure out how the reports value my mutual funds as dollars
11:15:59 <indigo> is there any explanation beyond what's at http://svn.gnucash.org/docs/guide/invest-stockprice1.html?
11:16:22 <warlord> what 'price source' do you have configured in the report options for the report in question?
11:16:47 <warlord> generally it's based off pricedb entries.
11:17:01 <indigo> right now it's set to "weighted average"
11:17:12 <indigo> but really i don't understand what any of them mean
11:17:36 <indigo> none of them seem to reflect the value of my investments that i've seen on the statements
11:18:23 <indigo> also after reading the docs i still don't understand what they mean
11:18:28 <indigo> example: "Weighted Average - gives you a graph of the weighted price of all transactions. It will not take into account prices defined in the price editor.
11:18:29 <warlord> yeah, change from weighted average to 'nearest in time'
11:18:33 <indigo> weighted by what?
11:18:39 <warlord> #shared
11:18:41 <warlord> shares
11:19:29 <warlord> so 100 shares at $1 will weight the same as 50 shares @ $2
11:19:53 <indigo> so it calculates the mean cost per share i've ever entered in a transaction, and uses that same value for the entire graph?
11:20:27 <indigo> or basicly all the shares i own divided by all the money i've ever spent on buying them?
11:23:22 <warlord> I believe that's how it works, yes

17:42:38 <Karen_m> my gnucash crashed again, and it never releases the lock. How do i unlock the file so that I do not have to reboot?
17:45:05 <jsled> reboot?
17:45:16 <Karen_m> gnucash keeps crashing, argggh
17:45:25 <jsled> isn't there an option on the window that says "open anyways"?
17:45:41 <jsled> you can also just remove the lock file, if you're sure there's no other gnucash instance running
17:45:54 <Karen_m> jsled, yes I just read that... that is safe

18:01:59 <kimmo> Karen, when you open a gnucash file, gnucash creates a .LCK file there which isn't removed until you cleanly close the file. If you know you don't have gnucash open anywhere, you can simply "Open anyway", and perhaps replay the log file
18:03:26 <Karen_m> adding a new customer kept crashing, so I just recreated the whole file from scratch. I only had 2 customers and 2 invoices so far
