08:33:37 <cortana> how should I account for shares I have been given as a gift? do I enter them as being 'bought' for 0 (since i didn't pay anything for them) or the value on the share certificate, or the value that they were bought at by the gifter?

10:56:56 <linas> warlord, who is the web-site maintainer now? Maybe we can ask him, maybe he knows someone more design-oriented who could put something like that together ...
10:57:12 <linas> Might be worth asking about on a mailing list
10:57:40 <warlord> I'm not sure who's maintaining the website right now. Probably best off asking on -devel

12:11:04 <indigo> is there a way to close expense and income accounts to equity that doesn't mess up reports?
12:11:53 <indigo> and by mess up, i mean, if i close the books on dec 31, that doesn't mean my expenses were negative many thousands of dollars for december.
12:15:14 <warlord> indigo: nope.
12:15:52 <warlord> The best way to do it without messing up reports is to choose a closing date that would never be used by a real transaction, and then make sure when you run the report and don't use that date.
12:16:06 <warlord> e.g. chose Jan 1, and then run reports from Jan 2 - Dec 31
12:19:57 <warlord> er, choose
12:22:51 <indigo> would it be hard to have the reports ignore tranfers to equity accounts?
12:22:57 <indigo> or at least some of them
12:23:05 <indigo> like, the expense barchart
12:23:07 <warlord> Patches always welcome.
12:23:29 <indigo> i figured so
12:23:34 <indigo> but my question was if it would be hard :)
12:40:10 *** bentob0x has quit IRC
12:40:47 <warlord> I suspect that each report would need to be so modified. :(
12:41:03 <warlord> It would be much easier to just set your Period Dates to not include the date-of-closing
12:42:55 <warlord> Anyways, gotta run.
