00:05:21 <indigo> so here's a pretty basic accounting question: do i debit my checking account when i receive a check, or when i deposit it?
00:06:37 <indigo> if the latter, how do i account for checks i've not cashed? If the former, how do I know, looking at the bank statement, which individual checks were deposited?
00:16:58 <mishehu> do you mean checks that you wrote to somebody else?
00:17:12 <mishehu> because you aren't making much sense here
00:17:24 <mishehu> I wouldn't even document a check I wasn't going ot cash yet.
00:17:47 <mishehu> and it's not a debit to my checking account, it's a deposit

00:58:28 <indigo> checks i've received
00:59:00 <indigo> i feel like i should record something if i get a check in payment of a debt
01:00:34 <indigo> and a debit to a checking account is a deposit.

09:09:10 <warlord> indigo: you could use a suspense account for that.. Transfer to the suspense account when you receive the check; transfer from suspense -> bank when you deposit

10:55:03 <Mer|in> warlord: would that suspense account be an asset?
10:55:22 <warlord> Yes
10:56:32 <Mer|in> oh so you mean something like Assets -> Checks in my drawer
10:57:09 <Mer|in> makes sense
10:58:45 <Mer|in> unrelated question - how is a transaction date to be defined? should it be the date the credit/debit was sent to the bank or the post date?
10:59:10 <Mer|in> i realize that functionally gc doesn't care, just talking in general accounting terms
11:01:01 <warlord> If you use a suspense account, the first txn would be dated the day you receive the check; the second is the day you deposit it at the bank. When the bank posts it is when you mark it "Cleared" (reconcile state)
11:02:10 *** lapdog has joined #gnucash
11:04:29 <Mer|in> is there a way to display the post date in gc?
11:07:21 <warlord> No
11:07:41 <warlord> Er, assuming you mean "the date the item posted to the bank account"
11:07:44 <warlord> then no..
11:08:13 <warlord> The "post date" of a transaction is the date *you* post it, which can be different than the day the bank posts it.
11:08:36 <warlord> (your "post date" is what you see in the register)
11:09:39 <Mer|in> yeah i had meant the date the transaction was marked as cleared
11:09:46 <Mer|in> my next question is whether it could be set

21:37:11 <BentSpace> I recently moved to a new laptop and from Ubuntu 10.04 to Ubuntu 10.10 and wanted to bring my GnuCash files to my new computer so I copied all the files in my home/.gnucash folder to same directory on my new computer after installing GnuCash and when I try to open my file in home/.gnucash/books it tells me "Can't parse the URL /home/redfox/.gnucash/books/NGB." any idea what I'm doing wrong, please?
21:38:47 <BentSpace> I'm on gnucash 2.2.9 now, not sure which one I was on before, but it was the one for Ubuntu 10.04.
21:55:18 <warlord> BentSpace: your datafile isn't in ~/.gnucash -- those are ancillary files.
21:55:26 <warlord> your datafile is wherever you put it
22:24:53 <BentSpace> warlord: Thank you. So I shouldn't have copied those files, should I just delete them, then? What's the extension of the datafile, not sure where I saved it?
22:27:50 <BentSpace> Think I found it, is it the one with no extension?
22:44:09 <warlord> BentSpace: Correct, it would have no extension in 2.2.9
22:44:25 <warlord> You can still copy ~/.gnucash -- it has things like report setups and such
22:44:38 <warlord> anyways, i'm off. I'll be back in to morning
