05:36:27 <Rajish> ok, this is strange or I don't understand the terms debit and credit
05:37:12 <kimmo> no they did not
05:37:36 <Rajish> why debit is a synonim for deposit
05:37:52 <Rajish> and credit for withdrawal?
05:38:19 <kimmo> that's not right
05:39:07 <Rajish> in the preferences dialogue there is the option Accounts->Use formal accounting labels
05:39:35 <Rajish> when you change it the columns change like mentioned above
05:40:22 <Rajish> ok. I'll check bugzilla if there is something reported
05:43:33 <kimmo> are your account types right?
05:48:52 <Rajish> ok, found it
05:49:01 <Rajish> I'm not an accountant
05:49:13 <Rajish> from their point of view this is right
05:49:24 <Rajish> I'm wrong

07:59:53 <warlord> Rajish: for a bank account, from your perspective, a debit is a deposit and a credit is a withdrawal.
08:00:36 <warlord> The reason you (and MOST people) have it backwards is that they are used to seeing the terms from the *BANKS* side. From the Bank's perspective your account is a LIABILITY, where a credit increases and a debit decreases...

08:05:22 <Rajish> warlord: yup, got it (also from wikipedia)
08:06:06 <warlord> ok
08:06:38 <Rajish> the current Polish translation is slightly misleading
08:07:06 <Rajish> but I have corrected this

09:23:32 <lupin_sansei> Hello, I exported my bank transactions as QFX (really .ofx) on the weekend and imported them into Gnucash. It all went well and now I want to import the last few days more, so I exported the last 7 days of transactions, the smallest I can export, and Gnucash won't import them. It just shows no matching transactions in "Generic import transaction matcher"
09:24:08 <lupin_sansei> There's about 3 days of new transactions, and a couple of days of overlapping ones, is that the issue?
09:25:18 <warlord> The overlapping transactions should be ignored. The new ones shouldn't be, but..... Do you still have the old .ofx files? Check the FITIDs and see if they are absolutely unique.
09:25:19 *** daedeloth has quit IRC
09:25:32 <lupin_sansei> no it overwrote the old file
09:25:50 <warlord> Oh. Well then no way to check if the bank is duplicating FITIDs
09:26:03 <lupin_sansei> actually I can get it back let me check....
09:29:05 <lupin_sansei> okay got the old one back, I have them in a diff program
09:30:13 <lupin_sansei> I get the node <FITID> but there's nothing in it!
09:31:46 <lupin_sansei> This is weird only the new transactions since the weekend have no FITID, all the ones in the file after that date have a FITID
09:32:06 <lupin_sansei> Maybe it takes a few days for them to get a FITID?
09:32:09 *** daedeloth has joined #gnucash
09:36:09 <warlord> Dunno.. But an empty FITID would probably be ignored.
09:38:02 <lupin_sansei> ok hopefully it's that
09:41:11 <lupin_sansei> thanks

09:45:20 <warlord> I just received about 200 bounces from the gnucash monthly email. Apparently we don't send enough to gnucash-announce for the auto-bounce to work.

12:07:12 <gjanssens> warlord: out of curiosity, is the old cvs repository still online ?
12:07:30 <warlord> Maybe
12:07:46 <gjanssens> Ok
12:08:59 <gjanssens> I found gnucash on the ohloh project site and it seems they try to track changes in cvs besides the svn repo
12:09:02 <gjanssens> See https://www.ohloh.net/p/gnucash/enlistments
12:09:12 <warlord> I dont see it..
12:09:38 <warlord> I might be able to restore it from a backup.
12:11:33 <gjanssens> Oh, I'm not sure that's needed. I'll ask ohloh first what happens if I remove the cvs enlistments.
12:11:54 <gjanssens> If it doesn't affect history, I think we don't need to setup cvs again
12:13:00 <warlord> I wouldn't want to set up cvs again either way..
12:13:10 <warlord> All the cvs history was migrated into SVN anyways.
12:14:02 <gjanssens> Right, so all information should be available with svn only. Let me change that on ohloh then.
12:14:25 <warlord> It should be, yeah. Let me check.
12:20:01 <warlord> gotta run, back in a bit.

19:02:29 <skippuff54> hello all...couple questions: first, my gf gets a monthly stipend from grad school, and they do not take out taxes so she is supposed to pay them quarterly on her own. how can i split the transaction so that the monthly deposit automatically increases her tax liability by 25%?
19:03:33 <skippuff54> next, what is the best way to set up accounts for my college tuition bill, student loans, grants, and scholarships? every way i try, i end up with some imbalance
19:03:49 <skippuff54> on that question, is the tuition a liability or an expense? or both?
19:24:19 <skippuff54> does it help to think of my college degree as an asset, or an item in my equity? or, my student account with the bursar as an asset?
19:56:58 <warlord> skippuff54: for your gf that's hard.. What you might need to do is do a double-txn in one...
19:58:23 <warlord> let's say she gets 1000. You want to earmark 25% to taxes. So you would do something like: credit income $1000; debit checking $1000; debit expenses:taxes $250; credit liabilities:taxes-owed $250
19:59:42 <warlord> As for your bills.. your education itself is an expense. loans are liabilities. grants are... I'm not sure. income? equity? not sure. if you end up with an Imbalance account then you're not splitting correctly.
20:00:11 <warlord> unless the bursar is giving you money then it's not an asset ;)
20:05:36 <skippuff54> ok hang on, readin and thinkin...
