04:43:49 <davidar> New - please excuse wrongdoings. Been using gnucash for 3 years - had an folder few hundred kb in size. Moved overseas and created many new accounts for new country, keeping the old ones as I work in both countries. I then had to un-reconcile all my original accounts as I had not made any entries for over a year. After re-reconciling some of them correctly, the folder is now 30+MB in size. Is there anything I can do to

10:24:58 <warlord> davidar: You could try to delete backup/log files...
10:26:05 <davidar> warford, won't I lose the transaction data?
10:32:53 <kimmo> the .xac and .log files are not really needed
10:33:14 <kimmo> .log are transaction logs, .xac are autosaves
10:35:56 <davidar> kimmo, they must have a very good algorithm to keep the file one opens so small ...
10:36:07 *** k4i has quit IRC
10:36:22 <kimmo> just basic compression
10:36:56 <kimmo> my uncompressed file of 8 years was only like 15 megs
10:38:39 <davidar> warford, kimmo, thank you very much for your help. My data is more than 3 yrs and a lot of accounts - never realised everything was in that one file. Thanks.
10:43:59 <warlord> My uncompressed personal data file, started on 1 Jan 2007, is only 564942 bytes
10:44:04 <warlord> er, *compressed*
10:46:54 <davidar> when I open an account or scroll through it, there is often blank grey areas - only when I click on the grey area do the transactions show. Is this just me or a bug?
10:52:13 <kimmo> I might as well compress my data, I only have it uncompressed for "safety paranoia" and xml format documentation reasons
10:53:00 <kimmo> hmm, I've never run into that... I know there's some "true" blanks in the general ledger view but that's it
10:54:34 <davidar> I can't send a jpg image on this channel can I?
10:55:07 <kimmo> no, but you can use http://imagebin.org/ for example
10:55:23 <kimmo> just keep in mind that it's the internets, so it's public and most likely googleable
10:55:46 <kimmo> what a mouthful, googleable
10:56:15 <kimmo> warlord, your former hometown's greatest rock hero just put out a new album
10:56:38 <davidar> :)
10:56:38 <davidar> I won't put it on the net
10:58:12 <kimmo> well you can always use some editor to blank out areas
11:00:03 <davidar> true - I'll check on linux first and see if it happens on that computer. Thank you all for your help - signing off ...
11:00:37 <kimmo> you should always use linux anyway
11:01:54 <warlord> Aerosmith?
11:02:07 <davidar> I only use windows because I have an app that I have to run - and there's no linux euivalent --- but yes, I agree with you ...

13:19:33 <c0ld> hi, is there a way to get gnucash to handle ofx files downloaded with firefox, via a script or something?
13:20:48 <jsled> the ofx importer, perhaps?
13:21:51 <c0ld> from in gnucash you mean? means downloading, navigating to, then reopening from gnucash
13:22:04 <jsled> no, just the importing part.
13:24:21 *** zippity has joined #gnucash
13:26:16 <zippity> How do I install Gnucash on Ubuntu 10.04 without an Internet connection? I'm here at the library and recently upgraded my home computer from Ubuntu 8.04 to 10.04. I expected to find a single .deb file, but I've been searching online for a while now, and I'm confused. Is there a single .deb file I can download to install the latest stable gnucash on Ubuntu?
13:27:05 *** zippity is now known as jfcarroll
13:27:12 <warlord> jfcarroll: apt-get install gnucash
13:27:42 <warlord> Ubuntu builds/distributes gnucash in their repositories.
13:28:52 <jfcarroll> Yes, if I had an Internet connection at home, I would do as you suggest. Do you know how to download .deb files from the Ubuntu repositories?
13:29:26 <warlord> nope, i dont do ubuntu
13:30:04 <c0ld> can't find executable of ofx importer, little pointer?
13:31:33 <jsled> c0ld: what version of gnucash are you using? what os/distro?
13:31:45 <warlord> c0ld: it's a gnucash plugin. Just run File -> Import -> Import OFX from the GnuCash menu
13:33:40 <c0ld> arch linux
13:34:00 <c0ld> warlord, thats the method I'm trying to avoid
13:34:48 <c0ld> my bank gives me ofx all of the same name, I'd have to download them one by one, renaming each one, the use gnucash menu to import them one by one, pita
13:36:24 <c0ld> I want to be able to associate ofx with a script in FF that imports to the current running instance
13:36:32 <warlord> c0ld: no can-do
13:36:41 <c0ld> :(
13:37:06 <warlord> your choice is: OFX-DC, or download-and-import. Both operations are from GnuCash (although the second requires you to save the OFX file)
13:37:19 <warlord> er, save it from a download from some other app
13:37:37 <c0ld> bank doesn't support DC, most banks outside the US don;t ftm
13:40:44 <warlord> Well, then, you're stuck with download-and-import, which requires you to save the file and then import from gnucash.
13:40:46 <warlord> Sorry.
13:41:14 <c0ld> think I might look at how DC works, might be able to mimic it locally or something
