22:10:47 <ajg> question about this close books feature. I've been researching the bugs i've been seeing and it seems liek the solution is to close the books on a date which you dont consider part of your period. this is fine for once per year, but what if my period is monthly? do i always close on the first day of the month and remember to manually run the report which does NOT include that date?

22:48:55 *** warlord-afk is now known as warlord
22:48:57 <warlord> scar: yes
22:49:18 <warlord> ajg: there's no reason to close your books monthly.
22:49:37 <warlord> all it does is add zeroizing transactions.. and it'll make reports across periods impossible.
22:56:36 <ajg> warlord, i've found via google searches that if I close on 1/1/xxxx and don't put any transactions in on 1/1/xxxx then don't include 1/1/xxxx on the reports, everything works out fine
22:57:03 <warlord> yes.
22:57:06 <warlord> that is true
22:57:09 <ajg> so, is there a way to change the start/end period dates so I can easily run the reports via that radio button
22:57:22 <ajg> rather than remembering what date i need to enter, going forward
22:58:01 <ajg> see, i'm worried i'll forget the practice next year, i just retroactively redid my closures since everything was messed up for my prior years, so it's all fresh in my mind now... but in another year, who knows
23:00:16 <warlord> that what notes are for.
23:00:26 <warlord> For what it's worth, I dont close the books personally.
23:00:30 <warlord> The reports dont care.
23:00:49 <warlord> The only reason to close books are if you actually care that the Chart of Accounts In/Ex accounts show "current" values.
23:11:06 <ajg> or to make sure your RE account is correct
23:11:17 <ajg> and it's good practice
23:11:32 <ajg> i havent closed books for 2 years because i have always had issues with it until tonight
23:13:27 <ajg> another thought, if there were a way to determine period dates manually (not sure if there is), a dropdown for period choices in the close books druid for say 2009 would autoselect a arbitrary date in between the close of period 2009 and begin of period 2010. ie. choosing to close period X (2009 in this example) would auto select say 2009-12-32 so that the reporting isn't messed up. i think that's the biggest complaint about the close book
23:13:27 <ajg> s feature, no?
23:14:00 <ajg> the fact that reporting is messed up as a result
23:15:12 <ajg> that would also allow for monthly, quarterly, etc closing. which some people need to do for process reasons
23:15:21 <ajg> though, im not sure of the feasibility of it
23:17:14 <warlord> patches always welcome
23:17:28 <warlord> But honestly, period support is... hard. gnucash uses dates, not periods.
23:19:09 <warlord> Like I said, I dont close the books. I just run reports for the dates of the period in question.
23:19:30 <warlord> the reports all work fine without adding the zeroizing transactions (which is all the close books function does)
23:19:45 <warlord> ... and if you want to close books monthly then multi-month reports will not work.
23:22:23 <ajg> it doesnt look like you can enter a invalid date either, so i dont know if there's a way around that
23:22:58 <warlord> Like I said, it's purely date based. periods are not first class objects. so no, you cannot enter an invalid date.
23:38:17 <mishehu> but how can I record those transactions I made on februrary 31, 2009?
23:38:33 * mishehu chuckles
23:48:32 <warlord> Heh
23:48:36 <warlord> Very funny, mishehu
23:50:59 <warlord> Anyways, bedtime for me.
