00:51:47 <stomper> Hi, This is the first time that I am in this IRC chat. I have one doubt regarding upgrading gnucash
00:52:54 <stomper> I used to use gnucash in my fedora core 4, which is version 1.8.12. I did not upgrade it so far. Now I need to upgrade the same, and I have to shift to windows version.
00:54:00 <stomper> I read that I need to first convert my datafile using the version 2.0.0 and saving it, before opening it in version 2.2.9. However, I am not getting a downloadable 2.2.0 version, since it is very old not.
00:54:37 <stomper> Any suggestions from where I can get the older versions of gnucash, especially 2.0.0 version
01:02:38 <gour> stomper: you nee version for windows?
01:05:45 <gour> stomper: the best would be to fetch old version from the repo and compile?
01:06:52 <gour> stomper: see http://svn.gnucash.org/trac/browser/gnucash/branches/2.0
01:16:43 <stomper> I have windows XP. Also have linux Fedora core 4, with 2.6 kernel.
01:17:23 <stomper> I am planning to shift to windows version since I will not have access to linux soon.
01:17:53 <stomper> How complicated it is to compile the older windows versions?
01:18:29 <stomper> Will there be any problems if I open my 1.8.12 data file directly in gnucash 2.2.9?

10:46:17 <crown6319> Hi, I'm using version 2.2.9. When viewing reports a lot of extra white space is inserted. Would this be a gtkhtml issue?
10:53:42 <warlord> Yes
10:56:48 <crown6319> Maybe a gtkhtml version comflict?
11:11:09 <warlord> Maybe. What OS/Distro?
11:11:19 <warlord> And what version of GtkHTML?
11:11:38 <crown6319> Slackware 12.2 with Gware for the gnome libs
11:12:04 <warlord> Oh, you're one of THOSE people... ;)
11:12:15 <crown6319> libgtkhtml-3.14 3.24.3
11:12:29 <crown6319> guilty as charged
11:13:21 <warlord> Hmm.. I have gtkhtml3-3.28.3-1.fc12.x86_64
11:14:37 <crown6319> thanks, I'm going to test another version of gtkhtml and recompile gnucash.
11:15:32 <crown6319> By the way, hats of to the development team. Gnucash is a great project!
11:18:42 <warlord> thanks

12:23:32 <crown6319> Ok, I resolved the issue with gtkhtml and extra spaces inserted in reports.
12:24:58 <crown6319> I replaced gtkhtml 3.24.3 with 3.16.3 and all is fine.
12:29:00 *** Oejet has joined #gnucash
12:29:14 <Oejet> Hi.
12:30:44 <warlord> Huh. Interesting. Well, in 2.4 we've added support for WebKit which should be better on many fronts.
12:31:38 <crown6319> Great, when I have a chance I'll give it a try.
12:33:39 <Oejet> What is the term for adjusting an account to the actual amount on some specific date, e.g. adjusting a cash account to the wallet amount?
12:34:28 <crown6319> reconciliation?
12:37:40 <Oejet> crown6319: That is my guess too, but the documentation gives me a slightly different impression.
12:39:30 <warlord> Oejet: generally you only reconcile accounts where you get monthly statements.
12:40:00 <warlord> You can still reconcile a 'cash' account, but personally I don't. Periodically I just look in my wallet and add a transaction for any missing $$, most likely because I forgot to account for something.
12:41:15 <Oejet> warlord: Ah, so you transfer the amount between your wallet and an account with unspecified expenses?
12:42:13 <warlord> Yeah, every few weeks I do A:CA:Cash in Wallet -> Ex:Misc
12:42:30 <warlord> (for anything I missed -- to make my CiW balance to what's in my wallet)
12:44:23 *** ErKa has joined #gnucash
12:44:43 <Oejet> I understand that reconciliation can be used for instance when paying online, where there is some delay before payment is recorded on the bank account.
12:45:35 <Oejet> warlord: Okay, I understand.
12:45:43 <warlord> reconciliation can be used for any account where you get a periodic statement. e.g. a bank, credit card, etc.
12:50:32 *** crown6319 has quit IRC
12:51:21 <Oejet> warlord: Then you manually calculate the amount to move from CiW to Ex:Misc?
12:52:39 <warlord> Oejet: I can let gnucash do it for me. Let's say GNC thinks my balance is 220, but I only count 197 in my wallet. I just put "220-197" in the withdrawal column
12:53:16 <Oejet> Ah.
13:12:13 <Oejet> warlord: Thank you very much!
13:21:34 <warlord> you're welcome

22:56:08 <mezimezim> hi there, I have 2 questions
22:56:30 <mezimezim> 1. how do I "end a year", i.e. a fiscal year ?
22:56:51 *** fDavid has quit IRC
22:57:53 <mezimezim> 2. This one may be a little more complicated.... I have used gnucash to keep track of my expenses related to renovations, and I have payed in different ways for renovations (VISA, cash, re mortgage, etc.)
22:59:09 <mezimezim> all of this is in gnucash, I would like to quickly find out the total expense that went into renovation, which was paid in ways other than re-mortgaging, is there such a quick way one of you could think of?
