03:38:38 <TW> hi, i need some help of gnucash, is anyone here can help me?
03:39:51 <TW> I have 2 accounts, there is a transaction just from one to the other.
03:40:34 <TW> but when I import the bank file to gnucash, I got one trans in each account.
03:40:55 <TW> How can I match them to become a single transaction.

06:05:39 <frozenjim_> Does anyone have a solution to the "Cumulative Sales Tax" problem? ie. in one province of Canada, we charge "GST" and then require that the "PST" be charged on the subtotal of goods-and-GST. I can make this happen in a single line on the invoice, but I really need to see both lines broken out. Lots of talk on forums, but no solutions. Anyone here have anything fresh to throw into the ring?
06:49:43 *** fDavid has joined #gnucash
07:01:39 <frozenjim_> To be clear, the tax is correctly calculated, but my clients cannot see how much GST or PST they have paid. This makes their bookkeeping tough. Is this simply a question of making a custom invoice template?

07:12:28 <frozenjim_> Crap - why do I always have to ask the question in public before I find an answer for myself? I've been chasing this for a week and only this morning decided to ask for help on the IRC. So a hour later I discover the "Report Options" button and, to add insult to injury, I also found a page that claims that I can edit the .scm file to make these options default. Anyhow.... I think I'm good. When this is all figured out I'
07:12:28 <frozenjim_> m going to post a "Quebec Gnucash How-To" site.
07:13:01 <wingo-pi> neat :)
07:13:13 <wingo-pi> i think there's a gnucash wiki you can add your info to

07:31:52 <adabo> Can I import QFX to a different account each time I import? Currently it the import function remembers the first import account and auto imports future imports to this account.
07:37:31 <adabo> ooh.. I butchered that one

07:43:42 <Karov> uuuuhm, than in english
07:46:06 <Karov> is there a tutorial for complete beginners? i dont know anything bout booking, registering and so on
07:46:58 <Karov> i didnt found a dokument describing this basics
07:47:25 <frozenjim_> This site is helpful. It teaches you about accounting and it teaches you how to do accounting with gnucash. Sadly, it is not available in German. http://www.open-of-course.org/courses/mod/resource/view.php?id=86
07:47:27 <gour> Karov: help file in the application is quite good
07:47:35 <adabo> In the latest version, the help file has a tutorial and explanation
07:48:17 <gour> yeah, gnucash's docs are quite nice
07:49:12 <Karov> thx
07:49:22 <Karov> the helpfile is even german :D
07:50:04 <adabo> btw, the fix for import and auto account: open the QFX file and manually change the account number. Worked for me
07:50:30 <gour> Karov: i also bought this book - http://tinyurl.com/y4xtpvl
07:50:40 <gour> it's very nice

08:08:09 <warlord> TW: which import method did you use? QIF or OFX?
08:08:46 <adabo> Did anybody learn polynomials in school?
08:09:44 <warlord> adabo: nope, you have to import ofx from the same place to the same place. Why would you want transactions from Account X to appear in Account Y one time and Account Z another time?
08:11:54 <TW> @warlord: I used QIF.
08:11:54 <gncbot> TW: Error: "warlord:" is not a valid command.
08:12:20 <TW> warlord: I used QIF for the import.
08:12:28 <adabo> Bank>QFX>gnucash; Bank report has deposits, withdrawals, purchases and transfers. I think separating the report into different accounts is practical
08:17:37 <adabo> I'm tutoring a 14 y.o. korean girl english who is learning polynomials... she says she can't do the math in american class because it's too easy...
08:18:18 <warlord> TW: Did you import both qif files simultaneously? Or did you import one then import the other? If together, do the two files point to each other's QIF account name? If one then the other, did you manually set the proper 'far' accounts and then look in the duplicate transaction matcher?
08:19:33 <adabo> she asked if I could help her with an equation. I said: "sure". So I looked at it and said "Oh neat. Algebra. Let's see.... umm... hm.. Ye.. no. No. Nope... Sorry, I have no idea what this is."
08:19:46 <TW> For my problem, I have 2 bank account, one is saving account, another is check account. I usually transfer money between two accounts. When I download the QIF file form ANZ online banking, I can only download one file for each account. After import the data to gnucash, the transfer transaction will show on both account. However, they are not linked.
08:22:39 <TW> That is, if I set "Transfer" to "Check account" in the transaction in Saving account, I will get duplicate transaction in Check account transaction list. One is from downloaded QIF for Check account, another is from where I set "Transfer" to "Check account" in Saving account transactions.
08:23:16 <warlord> TW: Are you importing both QIF files simultaneously?
08:23:38 <TW> I import them one after the other.
08:24:01 <TW> Import one file to "Saving account", and then another to "Check account".
08:26:04 <warlord> Hmm..
08:26:18 <warlord> And during the import "map qif account to gnucash account" page, what do you do?>
08:26:26 <TW> I notice, gnucash automatically matched some of transactions, and let me to confirm the matches. However, some are not. How can I manually matched them?
08:29:59 <warlord> If the transaction is not marked as a dup during the import, just delete one of them from the register.
08:30:25 <warlord> QIF has no transaction identifier so it needs to use algorithmic decisions (and human intervention) to detect dups.
08:31:59 <TW> umm, so, like, delete one in Saving account and set Check account one's "Transfer" from "undefined" to "Saving account", right?
08:37:03 <warlord> Wait... why is it "undefined"????
08:37:16 <warlord> THAT implies you are NOT properly setting the accounts in the importer!!!!!!!!
08:38:44 <warlord> That's your problem.
08:39:13 <TW> maybe I am wrong in translate the interface. My current language is "Chinese", so the interface of gnucash is Chinese too. In the Chinese translation, the meanning is not-defined.
08:39:14 <warlord> During the import process you must properly map the qif accounts and categories to gnucash accounts.. In this case you are not doing so, which is why it's not seeing it as a duplicate.
08:39:54 <warlord> No, that would be the correct translation.
08:40:25 <warlord> A transaction from Checking -> Undefined does not match as a duplicate of Savings -> Checking.. Nor does it map as a dup to Savings -> Undefined.
08:42:18 <TW> Yes, I did match the QIF account to gnucash's account during the importing. So, all the transactions showed correctly in the transaction list. However, the category of each transaction havn't been set up. I need manually set them.
08:43:03 <TW> In my interface, the column name of the category means "transfer".
08:44:00 <warlord> Your problem is that you are not mapping the transfer accounts during the import process.
08:44:09 <TW> the category of all transactions is "undefined" initially.
08:44:26 <TW> oh.. where i am wrong? during the importing?
08:45:52 *** blizgerg has joined #gnucash
08:46:52 <TW> I think there is a interface I might set wrong. "Matching QIF receiver/memo to Gnucash account".
08:47:24 <TW> Do I need match all of them?
08:51:03 <warlord> Yes!
08:53:25 <TW> ok, I got it. Currently, I just delete the duplicate, it works. I will match them next time.
