06:56:59 <derek> hello
06:57:21 <derek> I'm fairly new to GnuCash
06:57:30 <derek> I've found that the ofx import feature sometimes doesn't work
06:57:39 <derek> it doesn't show any of the records in the file
06:57:48 <derek> does anyone know what's happening there?

08:39:25 <adabo> what should I select in the transfer column in the register window when, for example, I enter a bus pass purchase?
08:43:00 <warlord> adabo: how do you want to account for it? I use "Expenses:Public Transportation"
08:43:03 <adabo> I'm using the "Common Accounts" categories, and of course using Expense>Public Transportation account. I appreciate the ehlp
08:43:19 <adabo> Um
08:44:30 <warlord> You can always just create a new account if one that's there doesn't quite match what you want.
08:44:41 <adabo> no no
08:44:44 <adabo> it all seems fine
08:45:25 <adabo> I just don't understand what do with the column. Why should I "transfer" anything? I don't quite understand financing or gnucash for that matter
08:46:24 <warlord> adabo: have you read the GnuCash Concepts and Tutorial Guide?
08:47:46 <adabo> Completely? No. Just the intro and the parts I need help with. I'll be happy to read the right section.
08:48:28 <warlord> How about the section on "entering basic transactions"? (that might not be the actual section name)
08:48:40 <adabo> i know... it's my ADD that keeps brining me here
08:48:41 <warlord> It sounds like you're not quite understanding double entry accounting.
08:49:19 <adabo> I remember reading DE. I didn't retain much, however.
08:49:38 <adabo> Thanks
08:50:18 <adabo> before I go reading.. does this manual tell me how I can look at my accounts in 2 different currencies simultaneously?
08:50:31 <adabo> For example, I live in Hungary but my bank is in America
08:51:01 <adabo> So my balance is Amercian, but my expense and income is Hungarian. Make sense?
08:51:44 <warlord> GnuCash doesnt do that very well.
08:52:03 <warlord> GnuCash really wants to help you convert everything into your "home" currency.
08:52:03 <adabo> woops
08:52:29 <warlord> (the accounting portion of that issue will get better in 2.4)
08:52:59 <adabo> I can live without it, so long as it can convert. It can convert, no?
08:54:21 <adabo> I'll read some more. Plus a little testing.
08:55:35 <warlord> it should be able to get price quotes for conversion.
08:56:23 <warlord> As for the transfer column, each transaction models a flow of money, it has to come from somewhere (the credit) and go to somewhere (the debit). E.g. if you buy groceries with cash the money comes from Cash and goes to Expenses:Groceries
08:56:35 <warlord> ... so you credit Cash and debit Ex:Groceries
08:56:49 <warlord> That's the transfer account -- the "other" side.
08:57:43 <adabo> seems simple enough
08:58:58 <adabo> ahhhh
09:00:24 <adabo> no way
09:01:36 <warlord> ???
09:03:08 <adabo> This is great

12:54:18 <KentonS> Hi. I just installed gnucash (WindowsXP) and imported all my Quicken data. After importing, everything was OK, except that there is no price history (or even any prices!) for any of my securities. Is there something else I have to do to get that information into gnucash? Thanks!
12:56:00 <warlord> KentonS: install ActivePerl, then run the quote grabber installer from the start menu. Then restart GnuCash and run the Get Quotes operation.
13:00:15 <KentonS> OK, Warlord. Thanks! Will that grab quotes from online sources only? Or does it somehow get price history from Quicken? The reason I ask is that I have YEARS of price history (going back to 1981). Mostly it's month-end closing prices I use for Net Worth reporting.
13:00:57 <warlord> There is no good way to import price history from quicken
13:01:24 <KentonS> Warlord: OIC. Bummer! ;-)
13:02:05 <warlord> I believe someone may have written a script that will help you import price history data by replacing the price grabber code, but I dont know where to find that
13:04:31 <KentonS> Warlord. OK. Thanks! I'll see what I might be able to find.
13:05:06 <warlord> Good luck!
