16:33:38 <jeremy> I have googled so much..... When I go to post an invoice. Why can I only select one account? not Accounts receivable, but equipment.
16:50:42 <jeremy> Perhaps I should add that I am using ubuntu 8.04lts and gnucash 2.2.6
17:08:11 <cortana> jeremy: stick around, hopefully someone will read your question and reply to you later
17:08:20 <cortana> if all else fails, try the mailing list
17:09:44 <jeremy> Thanks I am hoping that this can be solved soon.... I really like gnucash.... especially after getting all of the accounts setup

19:31:03 <fuzzybunny69y> hey everyone I am using Gnucash and have been trying to understand what Equity is. If I expand it, it just has my opening balance but it never changes. So I was just wondering if someone could explain what it is. Thanks
19:35:30 <jsled> There are two types of Equity. The "instantaneous" equity you're thinking of as defined by the Accounting equation … and the Equity account, which should really be called "Equity Adjustments".
19:35:49 <jsled> You can only get the former by running a report. And the misnaming should help explain the latter.
19:36:53 <fuzzybunny69y> hmmm yeah I just read the Accounting concepts page again
19:37:14 <fuzzybunny69y> I always have problems wrapping my head around in for some reason

19:39:51 <]grimm[> I apologize ahead of time if this a common irritation in here, but I'm trying to get my mom to migrate from Quicken to GnuCash and just got her data imported. I noticed that some of the accounts, particularly credit card accounts, are "flipped" in GnuCash (with credits listed as debits and vice versa.) Is there an easy way to correct this?
19:40:55 <jsled> ]grimm[: a) don't. :) the defaults make sense, B) edit > preferences has an option to control which accounts are sign-inverted.
19:41:16 <jsled> The default is that way because most people think of what they owe on a credit card as a positive balance.
19:41:27 <jsled> even though it's not strictly true from an Accounting POV.
19:41:53 <jsled> Just like in assset accounts, a debit is what increases your checking account.
19:42:04 <jsled> So we call it a "deposit" instead.
19:42:25 <]grimm[> got it, thanks
19:42:50 <]grimm[> The migration's been an adventure so far, but we're slowly getting there...

20:27:52 <raleightile> how very bad is it to have 2 gnucash running at the same time on the same file?
20:28:52 *** juker123 has joined #gnucash
20:29:17 <juker123> how is everyone doing?
20:29:23 <raleightile> this morning when I started it, I got an error about the file already being open, but I looked at the bottom bar and nothing was running, I hadn't been logged on via rdp, so I just assumed that the computer went down via ctl+alt+backspace or a reset.
20:29:38 <jsled> raleightile: you know how they talk about how the LHC will cause a black hole that swallows the earth? Worse.
20:29:54 <jsled> :)
20:30:19 <raleightile> about 10 o'clock I have two gnucash in the task bar
20:30:49 <raleightile> I can't explain how this happened, but the computer knew about it.. maybe next time killall gnucash first?
20:30:54 *** juker123 has quit IRC
20:31:18 <jsled> raleightile: So, the biggest issue is a lost update. GNC_A writes, GNC_B writes over it, GNC_B closes, GNC_A auto-saves and obliterates the last (valid) changes made by GNC_B.
20:31:36 <jsled> If GnuCash crashed the lock file will not be cleaned up, and you'll get the same error message.
20:31:38 <raleightile> that was what I was afraid of..
20:32:03 <raleightile> can I tell if it happened from the log files?
20:32:08 <jsled> if gnucash was smarter it'd symlink the lock file to a pid-specific file and look to see if the offending process is still running or not.
20:32:12 <jsled> no.
20:32:35 <jsled> if you explicitly say "ignore the lock", gnucash will just behave like it owns the file.
20:33:03 <jsled> raleightile: do you see or expect a problem?
20:33:13 <jsled> it may well be fine.
20:34:04 <raleightile> I checked my work from this morning, and it all seemed to be there
20:37:08 <raleightile> I have 7 log files that have entries, and 4 log files that have no activity, and always one and then the other
20:37:40 <raleightile> I'm going to double check all the transactions in the 7 log files
20:38:00 <raleightile> what kind of transactions are not recorded in the log files?
20:44:30 <jsled> business, primarily.
20:45:46 <raleightile> it shows invoice and bills, but I guess only how they update the a/p a/r registers, not the transaction details
20:46:31 <raleightile> so far everything checks out from the logs.. close call I guess
