07:59:39 <warlord> rockdoc: There may be more, but... what specifically are you looking for?
08:03:47 <rockdoc> a summary tutorial that avoids mention of personal accounting requirements and concentrates purely on business. eg I was unsure as to whether where to place the initial capital deposit ... I think this should be in equity: opening balances...
08:09:44 <warlord> Sorry, there is no doc that ignores personal accounting.
08:09:47 <warlord> (for GnuCash)
08:09:54 <warlord> GnuCash was always a personal accounting app first.
08:10:13 <warlord> The business features were tacked on, but it's still an application of two-minds.
08:11:14 <warlord> It's definitely equity; you can use Opening Balances if the deposit happened before you started the books. Or it could be Owners Equity or even Capital Deposit for after the books.
08:13:18 <rockdoc> ok ... I shall persevere and see how I get on - thanks for taking the time to respond.
08:13:42 <warlord> you're welcome.
08:13:56 <warlord> Keep in mind that most of the responders here are on US time. (it's 8:15am here)

09:36:53 <Don> My Vista system crashed and had to be reloaded. In that process, I lost GnuCash. I have a recent backup of what I thought were my entire books under the name "DesertDiabetesResources" showing as file. I have no XAC file.
09:36:55 <Don> I have reloaded GnuCash(2.2.9) but have been unable to retrieve my business books. Is there a way to get my company books back from my file DesertDiabetesResources or must I hav a XAC file to accomplish this? Help appreciated.

09:46:08 <tiwula> Is anyone having issues connecting to American Express? I have been stable for a long time but now I'm getting connection failures. Username/Password work to connect to their website.
09:50:39 <roe_> using their ofx connection?
09:53:05 <tiwula> yes
09:56:21 <roe_> I was connecting fine about an hour or so ago
10:00:09 <tiwula> and you haven't updated any of your settings?
10:00:38 <tiwula> There was an update to the OFX Direct Connect Bank Settings file for AMEX yesterday.
10:00:49 <tiwula> https://moneywell.tenderapp.com/discussions/financial-institutions/281-american-express-downloads-not-working
10:00:55 <tiwula> That link was referenced in the commit.
10:07:28 <tiwula> ok - updated connection information per the new information and connected successfully.

15:06:03 <dav> hi, there is a new functionality in 2.3.10 - a checkbox "TRADING ACCOUNTS" in Properties
15:06:19 <dav> what does the check box actually do?
15:11:10 <dav> I know the concept of trading accounts and I red Peter Selinger's papers
15:11:58 <dav> But the checkbox doesn't change any functionality, as far as I noticed

18:29:30 <flecto> hey all...is there any way to enter a newline in the description field when creating an invoice?
18:29:53 <warlord> flecto: no
18:30:42 <flecto> warlord: thank you. i wasn't able to find a definitive answer elsewhere. :)
18:32:03 *** dav has left #gnucash
18:32:28 <flecto> warlord: any suggestions on how to format a long description? for example, fixing some bugs and doing some consulting work involving multiple minor changes, but all billed at a previously agreed upon flat rate?
18:33:31 <flecto> warlord: i like to give detailed invoices, instead of general things like "bug fixes" or "requested scripts completed"
19:08:32 <warlord> flecto: Um, use Open Office and send it along with the Invoice?
19:10:14 <flecto> warlord: that is what i have been doing. was trying to get it all together in one app. not a major inconvenience to keep doing it this way, but thought i would ask with crossed fingers that i could scrap the external invoices.
19:10:44 <warlord> Sorry.
19:11:18 <warlord> You could put in multiple line items where only the first one had accounts/numbers.
19:12:05 <flecto> warlord: would that enter any accounting transactions for those "blank" line items?
19:12:37 <flecto> warlord: as in, a bunch of transactions with a zero dollar amount?
19:12:40 <warlord> No. Not if you left the Account and Qty/Price/Amt columns blank.
19:12:44 <warlord> Yes
19:12:59 <flecto> warlord: i will try it out...many, many thanks

22:10:08 <ed`> Does anyone know how to fix the "last occurence" date on a scheduled transaction without having to delete and re-add the thing?
22:16:24 <jsled> edit the datafile.
22:18:26 <ed`> That doesn't sound like much fun
22:18:47 <jsled> it's not so bad. single xml element.
22:18:55 <jsled> with a YYYY-mm-dd date string
22:18:57 <jsled> no problem.
22:22:06 <ed`> That sounds fine. What filename is used? I see mostly binary files in .gnucash
22:22:53 <jsled> it's whatever your datafile's name is.
22:23:00 <jsled> it'll be in the titlebar when you run gnucash.
22:25:13 <ed`> Ok. That's the first file I took a look at. It's a binary file.
22:27:06 <jsled> it's gzip compressed.
22:27:59 <jsled> so, er, gzip -d < file > /tmp/uncompressed
22:28:05 <jsled> then edit /tmp/uncompressed
22:28:15 <jsled> then either copy it back un-compressed on top of file
22:28:22 <jsled> or you can re-compress it, if you like.
22:28:48 <ed`> OK. That makes more sense. I didn't realize it was compressed. I'll give that a try. Thanks.
22:49:05 <ed`> Worked fine. The XML is very clear. Another good reason I'm switching away from Quicken. Thanks again.
22:49:23 <jsled> :)
