10:42:52 <cdl12> I have a question around how gnucash handles unrealised capital gains/losses on stocks
10:43:05 <cdl12> will it not update the equity until it has been realised?
10:43:49 *** daedeloth has joined #gnucash
10:56:36 <warlord> define what you mean by "the equity". Your "Equity Accounts" are never updated, ever. They show a static (point-in-time) value of Equity. For instantaneous equity you need to run a report like the balance sheet
11:02:29 <cdl12> ok, i'll have to do some more reading
11:03:06 <cdl12> i was under the impression that equity was the assets - liabilities

15:52:06 <dashs> I'm trying to do the initial add of stocks. 'Opening Balance' is greyed out.
15:53:21 <dashs> 'Select Security' will not allow me to select anything.
16:02:06 <dashs> When I am able to enter the account, I can't enter an opening balance.
16:06:42 <dashs> Always greyed out.
16:07:19 <dashs> Is there a list of required fileds and the required order of entry for adding a stock with opening balance?
16:07:31 <dashs> er, fields.

16:24:44 <warlord> dashs: create the opening balance transaction after you create the account. As for the security, you need to create one first.
16:29:44 <dashs> Need to read more of the doc; is it done more easily with an Equity:Opening balance account?
16:33:06 <warlord> That *is* how it's done. When you enter it in the account creation what it does is create a normal transaction to Equity:Opening Balances.
16:35:44 <dashs> Are automatic quotes in force at this time (share prices for opening balance)?
16:41:17 <dashs> I can't go back and request web quotes after the securiy has been defined?
16:41:41 <warlord> Umm.. You have to define the security before you can download quotes.
16:43:12 <warlord> anyways, I need to run

20:52:16 <mib_5yq9fvk5afg2> Hey guys and gals. I've just downloaded gnucash and I think it's great. Is there a way to show upcoming (scheduled) transactions on a account's tab?
20:52:54 <warlord> mib_5yq9fvk5afg2: run the Since Last Run?
20:53:25 <mib_5yq9fvk5afg2> Says there is none to be entered at this time.
20:54:45 <warlord> then you dont have any due within the time frame you have configured.
20:54:51 <warlord> what exactly are you trying to see?
20:55:36 <mib_5yq9fvk5afg2> I used to use moneywell on the mac and quicken on windows. It allowed me to see upcoming transactions and what the balance will be. How do I change this timeframe?
20:59:32 <warlord> under Edit -> Preferences
20:59:41 <warlord> it tells gnc how far in advance to post your SXes
21:00:07 <warlord> keep in mind that you can always post-date a txn. E.g., on 2/21 you can enter a transaction for e.g. 3/14
21:04:32 <mib_5yq9fvk5afg2> Not to sound rude, but Is there any other programs like gnucash for linux? I can only find gnucash and I wanted to compare them all.
21:05:27 <warlord> the only two others I know of are kmymoney and grisbi. (the latter is pretty much only useful in france)
21:06:09 <gjanssens> I believe there's also skrooge
21:06:09 <gncbot> gjanssens: Sent 21 hours and 40 minutes ago: <warlord> I think the dep changes are fine.
21:06:24 <gjanssens> But I don't know what it's capable of
21:07:13 <mib_5yq9fvk5afg2> Ahh you see kmymoney on the second screenshot on their website, it shows you "Overdue payments" "today's payments" and "upcoming payments". This is what I'm trying to do in gnucash.
21:07:45 <warlord> gnucash has a bills-due reminder in the biz features.,
21:07:58 <warlord> SXes can also be used as reminders.
21:08:29 * gjanssens is leaving for tonight...

21:11:54 <warlord> ok
21:12:01 <mib_5yq9fvk5afg2> Off topic here but I don't suppose you know of any MMORPG games for linux do you?
21:12:41 <warlord> i dont .. sorry

22:50:08 <silky> I'm new to Gnucash and have a question about splitting transaction. So I'm going through the concept tutorial and I need some assistance with problem "4.2.2 Splitting Transactions". When I try to enter the first expense (federal), after I enter the amount of $180 into the debit column, I end up with $490 in the credit column and $180 under it. Help.
22:51:26 <warlord> did you remove the existing entry in the credit column when you entered the 180 in the debit column?
22:51:49 <warlord> gnucash keeps track of the outstanding balance to help you balance the txn
22:54:07 <silky> No, I didn't remove the existing entry but it works now. Thanks
22:54:40 <warlord> you're welcome
23:14:46 <warlord> anyways, i'm off for the night.
