08:52:06 <Administrator> HELLO
08:52:18 *** Administrator is now known as BURNTSTUDIOS
08:52:49 <BURNTSTUDIOS> THIS IS MY FIRST TIME HERE. NEVER USED IRC BEFORE EITHER. I NEED SOME HELP WITH GNUCASH. CAN ANYONE HELP ME?
08:55:34 *** daedeloth has joined #gnucash
08:59:49 <BURNTSTUDIOS> OK, HERE IS MY QUESTION.... I AM HAVING A PROBLEM WITH THE "ACCOUNT" OPTIONS. WHEN I POST AN INVOICE, I AM TRYING TO POST IT TO A NEW ACCOUNT I CREATED UNDER ACCOUNTS RECEIVEABLE .... IT IS ALSO AN ACCOUNTS RECEIVEABLE ACCOUNT, BUT IS ACTUALLY BARTER WORK MONEY RATHER THAN REAL MONEY, SO I WOULD LIKE TO KEEP THE TWO ACCOUNT RECEIVABLE ACCOUNTS SEPERATE. I HAVE CREATED THE "BARTER" ACCOUNT...
08:59:52 <BURNTSTUDIOS> ...RECEVIABLE... BUT WHEN I GO TO POST THE INVOICE, IT DOESN'T EVER SHOW UP IN THE "POST TO THIS ACCOUNT" DROP DOWN DIALOG. i AM ONLY GIVEN THE OPTION TO POST THE MAIN DEFAULT ACCOUNTS RECEVIABLE ACCOUNT. SO I TRIED POSTING IT TO A NEW ACCOUNT, AND THEN PUTTING THE NEW ACCOUNT AS A CHILD IN THE HIERACHY OF THE ACCOUNT I WANT IT IN, THEN DELETING THE CHILD ACCOUNT, SO IT WILL AUTOMATICALLY...
08:59:53 <BURNTSTUDIOS> ...MERGE INTO THE CORRECT PARENT ACCOUNT, BUT THAT DOESN'T WORK EITHER.
08:59:54 <BURNTSTUDIOS> I THINK THERE IS A GLITCH IN THE "ACCOUNT" SECTION OF THE PROGRAM. ALTHOUGH I HAVE CREATED THIS NEW "BARTER" ACCOUNT RECEIVEABLE, I CAN NOT POST TO IT. IT IS NOT FOUND BY THE PROGRAM IN THE POSTING OPTION. I CAN SEE IT JUST FINE IN THE TREE HEIRACHY THOUGH. PLEASE HELP.

09:11:06 <jsled> BURNTSTUDIOS: please turn off caps lock; you're basically shouting. Also, please don't send a private message without prior arrangement.
09:11:51 <BURNTSTUDIOS> sorry and i didn't mean to send a private message. just trying to figure this out. never been here before or used and IRC... no body was replying, so i was just trying to learn this. sorry.

09:12:32 <BURNTSTUDIOS> i wasn't even sure if anyone could see my text or not. clueless here. sorry!
09:12:34 <jsled> no problem. :)
09:13:00 <jsled> IRC can be a pretty asynchronous medium, at times; it's best if you can just idly wait for an answer, for as long as you can.
09:13:17 <jsled> (many people are connected without necessarily being present)
09:15:06 <BURNTSTUDIOS> oh ok cool, thanks. well i can wait. :)

10:42:55 <raleightile> Scheduled Transactions, can they be used to enter a bill every month, or only for checkbook type transactions?
10:47:13 <jsled> raleightile: a bill like an invoice?
10:47:29 <raleightile> yes
10:47:38 <raleightile> a business transaction
10:48:00 <raleightile> biz>vendor>new bill
10:48:01 <jsled> no, the scheduled transactions don't operate on the business objects, unfortunately.

12:47:07 <AlexStacey> Hi, total n00b (apart fro reading the help file). Is it possible to select multiple records in an account?
12:48:57 <jsled> no, it's not
12:49:08 <AlexStacey> rly?
12:50:14 <AlexStacey> fair enough. i've just imported a year's worth of accounts from a csv and going through each of them one-by-one to set what kind of transaction it was is going to take a while
12:56:48 <AlexStacey> Is there some reason behind not having that functionality out of interest?
13:01:47 <jsled> no particular reason, no. lack of code.
13:02:12 <jsled> The "best" way to do that importing is via the QIF or OXF importers' transaction matching.
13:03:29 <AlexStacey> I see. You mean set a field for which account the credit/debit should come from in the QIF ?
13:06:14 * AlexStacey reads up on QIF format
13:08:35 <jsled> the QIF importer will match the transaction memos to the account you choose, and remember that for furture importing
13:08:53 <jsled> The OFX importer uses a different matcher that's a little more "fuzzy" in its matching (Bayesian approach)
13:09:05 <jsled> But … it's easier to convert CSV to QIF rather than OFX.
13:10:32 <AlexStacey> Ok. I only need to do it once so I guess I'll go with QIF and just be sure to get the names right.
13:10:38 <AlexStacey> Thank you for your help

14:45:26 <warlord-slow> I would have asked to make sure that the new account was type A/R..
14:45:38 <warlord-slow> .. And I'd make sure the account existed BEFORE he clicked "post invoice"
14:46:48 <jsled> nope; he ping timedout

15:21:13 <kimmo> oh btw warlord, I currently have set gnucash to use a period as a decimal separator, and when I accidentally use a comma (Happens sometimes as every customer comp that I use are hardwired to european locales) gnucash tells me it's unable to parse input "10,20". Is there a way to force the comma to be treated as a decimal separator instead of displaying that error message?

17:17:32 <dav> hi
17:19:24 <dav> I compiled 2.3.9 version on debian. gnucash application runs, but I can not open or save to/from a database. There is no dropdown menu to select xml/postgres/mysql...
17:19:44 <dav> what I made wrong?

18:07:21 <warlord-slow> kimmo: depends on the day.
18:07:34 <warlord-slow> never more than 20. Usually only a 5-10
18:07:59 <warlord-slow> dav: define "cannot save to/from a database". Did you --enable-dbi?
18:10:37 <dav> warlord-slow: probably not...
18:10:59 <warlord-slow> well, that would be why you can't access databases.
18:11:17 <dav> do i need to rebuild?
18:11:35 <dav> or just to run .configure with the option ?
18:11:49 <jsled> both.
18:12:07 <jsled> ./configure first to setup the build, then re-build to incorporate the cahnges.
18:12:49 <dav> thank you, guys
