05:42:11 <JonathanEllis1> A customer paid two invoices by bank transfer and the transactions have been imported via an ofx file downloaded from my bank. I have allocated the bank credits to "Accounts receivable" but how do I mark these transactions as payments for the invoices. If I click "Process payment" wont Gnucash generate duplicate transactions?

08:20:49 <warlord> JonathanEllis1: Yes, but that's what you have to do. You MUST process Payment, then delete the imported transactions. Next time you re-import them mark them as dups of the ones entered by Process Payment.
08:41:14 <JonathanEllis1> warlord: Thanks. That's what I have done as a workaround but it seems a bit untidy. Shame one cant mark existing transactions as invoice payments. How does gnucash keep track of which invoices have been paid?
08:42:11 <warlord> Lots. but there's no way to assign an existing txn to a lot in the UI. There's a long-standing bug for this (around the 100,000 bugID numbers)
08:43:19 <JonathanEllis1> OK. Well, I will keep working around it then. At least you guys know about it :-). When I say "you guys" I assume you are one of the developers.

14:10:19 <neno> it's income statement function
14:12:01 <warlord> Yes, it's showing the actual account totals, not the subaccount subtotals.
14:12:24 <neno> why not?

14:12:54 <neno> oh, pity, ok then; thanks again
14:15:09 <warlord> there may be a report option to turn that on, but I dont know offhand.

16:14:43 <manolo> Hi to all. Is there an Italian version of GnuCash? Thanks
16:15:13 <warlord> manolo: yes, there is an italian translation. Run in the "it" locale.
16:15:52 <manolo> warlord: thanks for your reply. I'm running Ubuntu 9.10, what should I do to run the "it" locale?
16:16:10 <warlord> set the system to run in Italian
16:16:29 <warlord> (you may need to install the locale -- I dont know the Ubuntu magic to do so)
16:16:41 <warlord> much of this is answered in the FAQ
16:17:33 <manolo> warlord: I am running Ubuntu in English language but I would like to get GnuCash in "it" language. Is it possible to maintain English for system and Italian for GnuCash?
16:18:14 <warlord> manolo: yes. see the FAQQ

16:20:38 <manolo> warlord: Thanks for your suggestion. I've been reading that page but I do not understand if that "env" setting would change the language for all of my application or just for GnuCash...
16:22:46 <warlord> env is a local change.
16:23:12 <warlord> so 'env LANG=it gnucash' only runs gnucash with the modified environment
16:23:56 <manolo> warlord: ok, so I should place that line into my .profile ?
16:24:37 <warlord> um, probably not

16:34:46 <manolo> warlord: "LANG=it_IT.UTF-8 gnucash" does the job. But how to run GnuCash in Italian language without all of those options?
16:35:03 <warlord> manolo: set your system locale
16:35:21 <warlord> .. or create a script that sets it for you
16:36:21 <manolo> warlord: Sorry, I don't know how to set my system locale. Can you please tell me at least if that setting will change the settings of all of my applications?
16:36:33 <warlord> yes, it would
16:37:52 <warlord> or you can create a script that sets the environment and executes gnucash. So you could create "gnucash-it" that runs that command.
16:38:01 <manolo> warlord: ok, thank you! Now it's clear. I mean, I can set a system locale for all my applications and then choose to run a single application in another language putting that LANG oprion before the name of the application. Right?
16:38:03 <warlord> Or I suppose you could create a shell alias
16:38:11 <warlord> yes
16:38:33 <manolo> warlord: a shell alias would be the fastest option I suppose :)
16:38:38 <manolo> thanks :)
16:43:02 <ajg> whats the reason why you can't delete an invoice?
16:45:51 <warlord> I didn't want to go through all the hair to make sure that everything was properly refcounted in order to warn you...

17:17:06 <mib_HO> Hello, just wondering if there is a U3-able version of GnuCash, and if so, where can I find it? Thank you.
17:21:19 <jsled> mib_HO: look for "gnucash portable". I'm not sure if it's U3-able, though.
17:24:01 <warlord> query: U3?
17:24:10 <jsled> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U3
17:26:20 <warlord> Ah. ok
17:36:30 <mib_HO> Thank you very much... gnucash portable seems to be for USB drives only, not USB keys.
17:37:51 <kimmo> I have a vmware image of fedora on an encrypted 8gb USB stick for tinkering anywhere
17:39:21 *** Zoolooc has joined #gnucash
17:41:48 <warlord> mib_HO: what's the difference between a "USB Drive" and "USB Key"?
17:44:02 <mib_HO> by USB drive I meant the external hard drive, vs the USB stick
17:45:37 <jsled> ah. http://portableapps.com/about/what_is_a_portable_app talks about both, explicitly. Why do you believe gnucash-portable would not work on a flash drive?
17:46:33 <warlord> gnucash portable doesn't care whether the USB thing is flash or spinny-magnetic-media
17:46:48 <warlord> (and the computer shouldn't care, either)
17:46:57 *** Zoolooc__ has quit IRC
17:59:41 <mib_HO> good question jsled... I was not sure if any portable app could be installed on a U3 smart drive. The software.u3.com software central lists all the apps that are U3-ready (and gnucash is not among them). I think I'd better try it anyway.

19:52:23 <alavarre> Hello all, new to this so be gentle, please... :-) Would like a discussion on using multiple currencies, e.g., USD and GBP
19:53:06 <alavarre> Once upon a time you could precede an amount with GBP to indicate that it was in sterling, but this seems no longer to work.
19:53:06 <warlord> This has been discussed much here and on the mailing lists. I suggest you look at the logs/archives..
19:53:23 <warlord> You could never do that!
19:53:40 <alavarre> Warlord, thanks for that, I have googled extensively without success, might you please give me a link?
19:53:44 <warlord> At least, you couldn't type it to specify. It would print it to tell you
19:53:49 <warlord> www.gnucash.org
19:54:18 <warlord> GnuCash has always had the requirement of one account per currency/commodity.
19:56:40 <alavarre> mmm. Not true, I think. I used (v. 2.0?) to be able to enter an amount as "UKP 2.00" and a window would pop up asking for the exchange rate.. But now (v. 2.2.9) that no longer occurs.
19:57:26 <warlord> Nope, never used to be able to specify it. And it will still pop up a dialog if it notices that the current register account currency != the 'other' account currency.
19:57:48 <alavarre> Oh, and obtw, www.gnucash.org is rather general, might you be a bit more specific? As I said I have already spent hours and hours researching this, so have come here to find a bit more specific information, not to be flamed or blown off.
19:58:56 <warlord> sorry, i'm in a meeting and don't have the time to google to find the threads on multi currency discusions. Off www.gnucash.org you can get to both the IRC Logs and List Archives. The searching is... mediocre..
19:59:17 <alavarre> So, who are the developers here that are so easily accessible? I have a number of other topics to discuss.
19:59:50 <warlord> what other topics?
20:00:16 <jsled> lists.gnucash.org, then.
20:00:44 <jsled> http://google.com/search?q=site:lists.gnucash.org+multi-currency , &c.
20:01:42 <alavarre> For example, it would be really cool to be able to specify a tax rate for an entry. In the UK everything is taxed at VAT 17.5% but in the US some commodities are taxed and others are not. It would be fun to be able to have a list of commodities with their associated tax rates, and then automatically calculate the net cost (base cost + tax) for a particular account. I guess I'm probably asking for a macro facility... :-)
20:02:27 <warlord> There's been some requests for that. Adding arbitrary hooks that get applied would be... interesting.
20:02:34 <alavarre> jsled thank you for that, I'll follow that trail.
20:02:50 <warlord> Right now the only way to do automated taxes is through the biz features + TaxTables
20:04:49 <alavarre> Warlord OK, the last is substantive thanks I'll follow that trail as well. Cheers.
20:05:06 <warlord> you're welcome. any other topics?
20:05:28 <alavarre> Not for now, I have trails to follow... :-)
