00:39:47 *** wrycoder has joined #gnucash
00:40:18 <wrycoder> Has 2.2.9 been successfully ported to Snow Leopard yet?
00:40:40 <kots> i think so
00:40:50 <kots> i am using 2.3.8 on snow leopard
00:41:19 <wrycoder> Did you compile it yourself?
00:41:24 <kots> no
00:41:30 <kots> i used dmg from the website
00:42:04 <wrycoder> I'll try that. The 2.2.9 I've been using just refuses to run properly. I can view a file, but can't update it.
00:42:25 <kots> 2.3.8 works 'almost' fine
00:43:09 <kots> when i use sqlite as backend, it refused to create new account
00:43:44 <wrycoder> I'm not using any database backend, as far as I know--it's just raw xml.
00:50:46 <wrycoder> Bummer. Still getting an error on restart, even with 2.3.8. Log says: 1/31/10 12:49:19 AM [0x0-0x2c02c].org.gnucash.Gnucash[8149] The domain/default pair of (.GlobalPreferences, AppleCollationOrder) does not exist

09:14:02 <mib_pwfrem> I need help with category reporting in gnucash. In the "Expense Barchart" report, I wish to display the report for only a specific category, for example Expense:Groceries. But when I do the selection in the report options, the report is still generated with the default set of accounts namely "all expense accounts". What am I doing wrong?

09:47:32 <candyflip> I just entered a stock purchase, and I'm having trouble getting the cost basis to be accounted for in the cash account that paid for the stock
09:48:19 <candyflip> it should happen automatically.. but I cannot manually fill in the cell in the "Decrease" column
09:48:33 <candyflip> (in the cash account)
09:48:57 <candyflip> both the INCREASE and DECREASE columns are left blank

16:01:19 <sandeep> hello
16:01:38 <warlord> thanks jsled
16:02:13 <sandeep> I am setting up a credit-card account. How can I add an opening balance?
16:02:25 *** digitect has joined #gnucash
16:02:30 <jsled> appropriately-dated transaction against Equity:Opening Balances
16:02:32 <warlord> sandeep: the same way you set up an opening balance to any other account, with a transaction to Equity
16:02:38 <digitect> hi all
16:03:28 <sandeep> A credit-card account is not equity - it's a liability. The balance is something I owe the creditor (a credit card company)
16:04:05 <digitect> heh, unless you're the credit card company :)
16:05:27 <jsled> sandeep: the credit-card account is a liability, true. Any balance you have at the "start" of your books does impact your equity, though.
16:06:11 <jsled> If your books start with 10k in your bank account and 3k due to the credit card co, your equity will be 7k, and the two accounts will reflect reality
16:09:07 <sandeep> So, to open the CC account, I credit the CC account, and debit my bank account?
16:09:34 <jsled> no, not your bank account. an equity account.
16:11:11 <sandeep> Ahh, OK, I see now... That helps. Thank you very much :)
16:15:32 <sandeep> Another question - in the main list of accounts window, stocks are displayed in terms of number of shares owned. How can I display these as dollar amounts? (I did read a documentation regarding this, but I could not find the "options" button it was talking about)
16:19:26 <warlord> sandeep: add the column to display balances in the report currency. Click on the arrow on the RHS of the CoA headings.
16:22:47 <sandeep> Sorry, I didn't understand. What menu options do I need to click on?
16:26:19 <jsled> sandeep: all the way to the right hand side of the column titles in the account tree view is a down arrow.
16:26:28 <jsled> that arrow lets you change which columns are displayed.
16:31:10 <digitect> how do I make a transaction report subtotal by description?
16:34:07 <sandeep> Thanks jsled, the Total(USD) column is what I needed.
16:34:43 *** andyt has quit IRC
16:38:31 <warlord> digitect: I dont believe the current report implementation supports that.
16:39:17 <digitect> hmm... I wonder how I can sort the charities contributed to last year?
16:39:27 <digitect> rather, total them
16:39:33 <digitect> I figured out how to sort them
16:40:03 <digitect> perhaps I should not have used Description to indicate organizations?
16:41:37 <digitect> although I have been doing it in GnuCash this way since 2003 :)
16:42:55 <kimmo> jsled, is there a way to get the Present column on accounts tab show a subtree total like the Total column?
17:04:39 <warlord> sorry, gotta run
