09:16:11 <JonathanEllis1> I need to import data from Nationwide Building Society but the only format they provide is csv. What is the best thing to do? I had previously installed the calc2qif macro into openoffice calc but it doesnt seem to work anymore. I see there is a python app called csv2ofx. Anyone know if this is any good?
09:21:44 *** warlord-afk is now known as warlord
09:22:02 <warlord> never tried csv2ofx. You might try other ways of csv2qif.
09:22:13 <warlord> You could TRY the CSV importer, but.....
09:31:59 <JonathanEllis1> Is there one? I just realised I might be able to use direct connect if I install aqbanking
09:33:38 *** KaiForce has joined #gnucash
10:00:39 <warlord> Sorry, got distracted in another screen. There is in AqB and in GnuCash 2.3, but I've never tried the former and the latter has a bunch of issues.
10:04:43 <JonathanEllis1> warlord: Ive just found out tha Nationwide ended support for Direct Connect and ofx back in October. B*st*rds!
10:05:08 <warlord> For what it's worth I never use online banking/import..
10:09:03 *** KaiForce has quit IRC
10:14:36 *** cubie has joined #gnucash
10:37:18 <JonathanEllis1> warlord: They dont even provide ofx or qif download, just csv
10:37:35 <warlord> :(
10:37:38 <warlord> Sorry.
10:38:00 <warlord> Like I said, I dont use the importers. I manually enter txns as they occur, and then reconcile them when I get my monthly statement.
10:38:08 <jsled> JonathanEllis1: if you're comfortable with scripting or maybe even awk, you should be able to convert csv to QIF and import that.
10:38:48 <JonathanEllis1> jsled: I can run someone elses script if I have instructions but I cant write one. I wouldnt know where to start
10:39:05 <jsled> there's an example at http://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/FAQ#Q:_How_do_I_convert_from_CSV.2C_TSV.2C_XLS_.28Excel.29.2C_or_SXC_.28OpenOffice.org_Calc.29_to_a_QIF.3F
10:39:29 <jsled> plus some other options, perhaps. dunno how much {link, bit}rot there's been, though.
10:41:04 <JonathanEllis1> jsled: I have calc2qif installed in Openoffice Calc but I cant get it to work or find any documentation
10:43:46 <JonathanEllis1> jsled: I also found csv2ofx from github but I cant get that to work either

11:51:43 <xsdg> warlord: howdy; I recognize you from zephyr :o)
11:52:11 <warlord> Hiya! Haven't been on zephyr in years.
11:53:09 <xsdg> warlord: yeah, me neither. It's neat running into sipb folks in the Real World :o)
11:53:16 <warlord> How goes it?
11:55:26 <xsdg> warlord: pretty well. I'm at Google in MTV nowadays, and am working on starting a small photography business on the side. The latter is what lead me to finally take a serious look at gnucash
11:59:19 <warlord> Cool. I get out there frequently. I stay in PAO and my office is in MPK.
12:02:20 <xsdg> warlord: cool. Unfortunately, I've got to run for now; just wanted to say hi

12:15:11 <notbatman> Pardon the thick skull, but I have not been able to cause a memo to print at the bottom of my checks (or cheques). To be clear, the memo of which I write is the one usually found at the bottom left corner of checks where folks indicate which invoice is being paid, and perhaps the last few digits of one's account number in the case of a credit card payment.

12:24:04 <notbatman> Aha! Double Line Mode. That's what I was missing. Thank-you once again, warlord!

15:49:49 <jsled> ecolitan: http://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/FAQ#Q:_I_want_to_use_GnuCash_in_my_own_language
16:01:41 <ecolitan> thanks! i had to run "locale-gen de_DE" first, then start gnucash with "env LANG=de_DE gnucash %f"
16:12:48 <kimmo> damnit
16:13:06 <kimmo> people should realize that it's a "decimal point", not a "decimal comma"
16:13:19 <jsled> heh
16:14:04 <ecolitan> i agree, but when you move to a strange land and get given a keyboard with a comma instead of the dot you gotta make do
16:14:33 <kimmo> loadkeys
16:15:03 <ecolitan> probably a better option
16:15:27 <ecolitan> but i'll end up moving my whole system into german eventually
16:16:03 <kimmo> yeah, ScheiBe kind of loses its edge if you don't spell it properly
16:16:34 <kimmo> there shold be a law against localization in computer systems and technology in general
16:17:24 <ecolitan> sounds a but harsh
16:17:39 <kimmo> although with EU, we'll probably get requirements for all 20+ languages visible at the same time
16:17:54 <kimmo> harsh? Most translations both suck and are inconsistent
16:18:39 <kimmo> especially the ones produced in China with semiliterate workers who barely speak english, let alone finnish
16:18:46 <ecolitan> but then if we were to do it fair
16:18:55 <ecolitan> and each user had one vote
16:19:14 <ecolitan> we would have all systems in chineese characters :)
16:19:29 <kimmo> not necessarily
16:19:35 <ecolitan> with a law against translation
16:19:52 <kimmo> I bet if everyone on the planet voted for a universal language, English would get about 60% of the votes
16:19:59 <kimmo> maybe a bit more
16:20:26 <kimmo> everyone whose first and second choices were not realistic choices would vote for english
16:20:59 <ecolitan> i'm interested to see how the localisation in domains will work out
16:21:12 <ecolitan> with non-latin chars
16:21:27 <kimmo> I mean, there's a technology academia organization in Finland who maintains an "official" dictionary of computing and technology. most of the words in the computing edition don't ring a bell for me or my prorammer colleagues
16:22:40 <ecolitan> yeah it can be a pain trying to do even basic admin tasks for users who have thier systems in german
16:23:10 <kimmo> and for example, "apply", "submit", "commit", and "save" are all supposed to be indicated with a word that to every finn, when mentioned without context, means depositing money on your bank account
16:23:29 <ecolitan> heh
16:23:43 <kimmo> I refuse to service any systems that don't speak 7 bit english to me
16:24:10 <ecolitan> dont try working in germany then
16:24:21 <kimmo> don't worry, I wont
16:26:43 <kimmo> now, on a different topic, does anyone know of a good tutorial, written for Joe Plumber, about capital allocation on a household level, specifically explaining reasons why renting makes financial and risk management sense?
