08:52:22 <mikemorr> Thanks warlord. That doesn't seem to work here but I appreciate the reply.
08:53:34 <warlord> Sorry mike. I dont use windows personally.

09:15:57 <Plouj-> to have a clean view of different set of accounts
09:23:04 <jsled> Plouj-: it's not a profile, it's just a datafile.

12:28:39 <Jeremy> Do I have to do this manually? I would rather do this the the process payment option

12:32:49 <warlord> Jeremy: It'll go wherever you set in the Tax Table
12:33:45 <warlord> Although not sure why you would have set it to a sub-account of A/R. That just seems completely wrong.
12:33:49 <Jeremy> Do I need a different tax table to receive PST+GST from customers than PST_GST to pay venders?
12:35:37 <warlord> Yes.
12:36:03 <warlord> .. if for no other reason than to put the PST_GST into different accounts for GST Paid v. GST Collected
12:39:22 *** jean has joined #gnucash
12:39:25 <Jeremy> The GST I can deduct amount paid from amount collected, PST is paid is just an expense, and PST collected is an A/R

12:42:35 <Jeremy> Yep I messed up. I am reading this here as we speak http://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/FAQ#Q:_How_do_I_handle_GST_on_invoices.2C_and_claim_GST_rebates_on_purchases.3F

13:35:51 <JonathanEllis1> Can I reconcile multiple transactions at once?
13:36:03 <JonathanEllis1> !reconcile
13:39:55 <Plouj-> jsled: But all it does is add the selected accounts to my existing hierarchy. I was looking for a way to maintain multile hierarchys to reduce confusiont/clutter while still being able to make transactions wherever I want.
13:40:28 <jsled> Plouj-: I meant File > New File … , not New Account Hierarchy
13:40:51 <Plouj-> oh
13:43:00 <jsled> Plouj-: in short, if multiple datafiles aren't acceptable … the answer is "not really". You could have parallel top-level accounts ("Assets 2", "Expenses 2", &c.), but you can't have multiple top-level root nodes, and the account type parent/child constraints mean you have no alternative, really.
13:43:16 <Plouj-> File -> New File opens a whole new file (disconnected from the first one)
13:43:27 <warlord> JonathanEllis1: The reconciliation dialog lets you reconcile a bunch at once. If your correction meant "unReconcile" then no, you cannot.
13:43:27 <Plouj-> jsled: ok, thanks
13:45:05 <JonathanEllis1> warlord: In the reconcile window it seems like I have to tick each transaction on by one. Am I missing something? If my starting and finishing totals match I am happy that all the transactions are correct and dont want to look at them all.
13:47:08 <warlord> Yes, you still have to tick each transaction. You can use the space-bar to speed up the process.
13:51:06 <JonathanEllis1> Hmm. Thats a bit of a pin. I download transactions monthly so I shouldnt need to check each transaction against a paper statement. Shame there is not a way to automate this by start and end dates and start and end totals. Is it worth me putting in a feature request?
13:52:10 <JonathanEllis1> I'm now not sure why the reconcile initial dialog bothers asking for statement date and amount since it doesnt seem to do anything with that information
13:53:16 <warlord> Do you download via QIF or OFX?
13:53:38 <warlord> It most certainly DOES do something with them! That's what you're reconciling against!!!
13:53:53 <JonathanEllis1> I download both. Why?
13:54:28 <warlord> It computes the difference based off the ending balance you enter.. And it uses the date to both a) choose a default ending balance (which may or may not be correct based on your monthly statement), and b) mark the reconcile date when you complete the process.
13:54:41 <warlord> Well, OFX import should be marked cleared..
13:54:49 <warlord> so you shouldn't have to re-check.
13:55:32 <warlord> (QIF does not auto-clear)
13:55:46 <JonathanEllis1> But the difference doesnt correspond to the statement ending date
13:57:40 <warlord> What do you mean? Let's say your statement is Jan 15th. Just because you have a txn you dated Jan 14th doesn't mean it'll be on the statement.
13:58:07 <JonathanEllis1> For example. On 29/06/2007 the register is at 2606.99. On the same date the bank is at 2599.29. Thats a difference of 7.70. However, the reconcile window shows a difference of 21037.64
13:58:33 <warlord> That means you haven't reconciled correctly.
13:58:38 <JonathanEllis1> And the reconcile window shows transactions right up to todays date
13:59:02 <JonathanEllis1> And I am guessing it is using figures all the way up to todays date to calculate its difference
13:59:16 <warlord> Yep
13:59:32 <warlord> reconciliation is always from the start of time to the reconcile date
13:59:58 <JonathanEllis1> But it seems not to be calculating to the reconcile date but to todays date
14:00:23 <warlord> It's calculating based on what you input into the dialog.
14:00:30 <warlord> ... and what txns you click.

15:11:42 <lesshaste> hi. I am using gnucash for the first time and just importing the .qif file my online bank provides
15:12:22 <lesshaste> every entry is repeated twice, once with the cash value in the Charge column and once with it in the Income column
15:12:35 <lesshaste> I just want to be able to see my personal finances, nothing fancy
15:12:39 <lesshaste> what is going on?
15:13:34 <warlord> You assigned to the wrong accounts.
15:13:58 <warlord> You mapped the QIF categories to your bank account instead of Income/Expense accounts
15:15:19 <lesshaste> warlord: ah... so let me start again from the very beginning...
15:15:49 <warlord> Yep
15:21:31 <lesshaste> warlord: ok. .would you mind holding my hand through this?
15:21:43 <lesshaste> the first question asks for the default QIF account name
15:21:50 <lesshaste> I assume that is just my bank account right?
15:22:24 <lesshaste> then it says "Match QIF accounts with Gnucash accounts"
15:22:33 <lesshaste> do I need to create new Income/Expense accounts ?
15:24:22 <warlord> There are QIF Accounts, QIF Categories, and GnuCash Accounts.
15:24:27 <jsled> yes. Or you can use the pre-made "Common" account hierarchy, which has a bunch of common expense accounts
15:24:45 <jsled> (income accounts are simple, there's only one or two. Expense accounts are more varied)
15:26:31 <lesshaste> jsled: that sounds good.. so basically I shouldn't have started by importing
15:26:45 <lesshaste> let me cancel all the import.. what should I do first?
15:26:56 <lesshaste> I should say I just got it working in grisbi without any of this :)
15:26:58 <jsled> well, you should have gotten the chance to select from the account hierarchies when you created a new file.
15:27:32 <jsled> but, if not, you can just go File > New > New Account Hierarchy (I believe) when on the Account tab, and add it in.
15:28:51 <warlord> Well, you can start with the import, but when you get to the point of matching QIF accounts/categories to GnuCash accounts you need to create them appropriately. The defaults could also theoretically work.
15:29:00 <warlord> (the first time)
15:29:20 *** thomas has joined #gnucash
15:30:33 <lesshaste> ok so I created a new account hierarchy and chose the common option
15:30:53 <lesshaste> now I am importing and am at the screen "match qif with gnucash accounts" again
15:31:03 <lesshaste> it has just one line with the name of my bank account on it twice
15:32:19 <warlord> That's fine -- map that to your Bank Account in the gnucash hierarchy... Double-click on the line to select it.
16:02:54 <lesshaste> thanks. I have given up for now
16:03:03 <lesshaste> grisbi just sort of did it all for me automatically

20:09:20 <BlackFrog> Does anyone know if there's any talk about creating a Android/iPhone app for GnuCash?
20:09:28 <warlord> none.
20:10:05 <BlackFrog> Not even a little bit?
20:10:25 <warlord> nope.
20:10:33 <BlackFrog> So I will be the first. Cool
20:10:38 <warlord> you're the first person I've heard mention it.
20:10:48 <warlord> there was discussion once long long ago about Palm and WinCE
20:12:31 <BlackFrog> I think it would be great to bring a companion app to GnuCash.
20:14:08 <BlackFrog> It could be simply on two fronts.
20:15:21 <BlackFrog> 1. To display account balances and recent transactions and 2. to add transaction that could be exported from the device and imported into GnuCash.
20:15:38 <BlackFrog> Not talking about editing existing transactions
20:20:42 *** cortana has quit IRC
20:26:44 <BlackFrog> So all the app on the device will do is just export the transactions entered in on the device to OFX.
20:33:53 <warlord> QIF might be easier.l
20:34:07 <warlord> but the getting the current account balances might be much more challenging
20:36:38 <BlackFrog> Wouldn't the current account balance be a snapshot of the books?
20:51:27 <warlord> That would imply bi-directional sync.
20:57:23 <BlackFrog> No, not a bi-directional sync. basically a one-way sync where gnucash would be master.

20:58:13 <BlackFrog> Hola, neblio
20:59:00 <neblio> I'm on gnucash, but at the moment I really just have a few accounting questions. Is that alright?
21:00:06 <BlackFrog> neblio, I am new here. Never used gnucash before. But ask your question and if someone is online/awake hat can answer I am sure they will
21:00:23 <neblio> BlackFrog, thanks
21:01:07 <BlackFrog> Also, never ask in irc if you can ask a question. It shows you are a noob and immature people will flame you.
21:01:28 <BlackFrog> *flame, not sure if flame is the correct term
21:02:19 <neblio> I started an s-corp (U.S.) and the first thing I did was deposit $1,000 into a company checking out (owner contribution).
21:02:38 *** fDavid has quit IRC
21:03:49 <neblio> I debited the checking and credited an account called owner's equity. Does owner's quity sound like a correct account name there?
21:06:28 <BlackFrog> Don't know much about accounting, but I was just reading here: http://www.cliffsnotes.com/study_guide/The-Accounting-Equation.topicArticleId-21081,articleId-21003.html
21:06:40 <BlackFrog> And it does mention owner's equity
21:07:44 <BlackFrog> Is this $1000 a loan to the company where the company pays back the money installments?
21:08:32 <BlackFrog> Or is owner buying more shares in the company?
21:08:36 <neblio> That's another question I have.. My attorney had me purchased common stock (100% ownership of company) and everything else I've personally contributed my accountant calls "additional paid in capital".
21:09:18 <neblio> I bought 100 shares, common stock no par valu for $500. That was a one time thing, I'm the only person in the company.
21:10:14 <BlackFrog> So, you have already invested $50,000 in your company?
21:11:09 <neblio> No, I paid $500 for the 100 shares of common stock. As far as buying stock, I only paid $500 and that's all the stock the company has so in that right I own 100% of the company.
21:11:27 <BlackFrog> k
21:11:32 <neblio> I have contributed cash from my personal funds on multiple occasions though which adds up to maybe $15,000
21:11:51 <neblio> My accountant has simply been calling that "additional paid in capital"..
21:12:13 <BlackFrog> I see that term in the url I posted above.
21:12:17 <neblio> I'm just trying to do my books myself in gnucash, because thus far I'm been sending him journal entries but really not understanding what I'm doing.
21:12:23 <neblio> k
21:12:45 <BlackFrog> How long have you been in business?
21:13:09 <neblio> Since mid-2007
21:13:53 <BlackFrog> Ok, so do you have access to the previous books? How did the account recorded those transactions in the past?
21:13:54 <neblio> I'm going back to the beginning and trying to create perfectly accurate books, because what I have now is fuzzy.
21:14:25 <BlackFrog> Ok
21:14:31 <neblio> I did it all by hand. Did my best to do the journal entries, ledger and sent them to my accountant and they have thus far been able to use that to do the rest.
21:15:03 <neblio> But it's obviouslly really bad if I don't jump in and really understand what's going on.
21:15:31 <BlackFrog> Stop
21:15:43 <BlackFrog> quick question
21:15:58 <BlackFrog> Do you have your books on site? With you?
21:16:23 <neblio> Yes
21:16:36 <BlackFrog> The complete books?
21:17:37 <neblio> Well, I have my fuzzy books which I did and I have tax documents they did as well as a balance sheet with it.
21:18:05 <neblio> The documents they did haven't been much help to me as far as going back and knowing exactly which accounts to create in gnucash.
21:18:09 <BlackFrog> Ok, your account is just doing the monthly/yearly statements for you

21:47:35 <neblio> Kind of. It looks like for equity I can create an account called "Capital, Me" and inside put "Common stock" and "Contributed Capital".
21:47:48 <BlackFrog> When you put $1000 (CASH) into your company you would credit the "Owner Equity" ledger
21:47:51 <neblio> To start, I guess I need to add a Cash account under Assets.
21:48:29 <BlackFrog> And then DEBIT your "Bank Account" ledger
21:48:41 <BlackFrog> or in your case the "Cash Account Ledger"
21:51:01 <neblio> Makes sense
21:53:04 <neblio> How about purchasing the $500 in stock?
