08:02:16 <kimmo> yancho, the New File wizard has some templates
08:02:42 <kimmo> but gnucash manuals document gnucash, not accounting :(

10:18:52 <markham_fixer> I've got an investment account set up (I thought) according to the manual, but when I book transactions (buy and sell from cash accounts) they don't display in the cash accounts - just the securities accounts. Have I screwed up the FX setup somehow?
10:23:09 *** warlord-afk is now known as warlord
10:23:56 <warlord> markham_fixer: Is the security of the account set up correctly? Did you set up the correct 'other' account for the double-entry? Is the parent of the investment account the correct currency?
10:25:18 <markham_fixer> Okay, that last bit might be it...
10:25:36 <markham_fixer> I have the following accounts:
10:25:45 <markham_fixer> "Margin"
10:25:49 <markham_fixer> Margin/Cash
10:25:53 <markham_fixer> Margin/Cash/CAD
10:25:59 <markham_fixer> Margin/Cash/USD
10:26:04 <markham_fixer> Margin/Stocks
10:26:08 <markham_fixer> Margin/Stocks/AMD
10:26:14 <markham_fixer> Margin/Stocks/AMZN
10:26:35 <markham_fixer> Does Margin/Stocks need to be USD because I'm buying and selling from Margin/Cash/USD?
10:28:49 <markham_fixer> :/ Didn't fix. Let me review your questions...
10:30:31 <markham_fixer> I believe the securities are set up correctly. The Margin/Cash/USD account is set correctly.
10:31:14 <markham_fixer> When I enter a buy, for instance, in the AMD account, from the Margin/Cash/USD account, the AMD account displays correctly, but the USD account shows only the splits - not the amounts.
10:31:30 <markham_fixer> Like the transaction is there, but the wrong currencies...
10:40:43 <markham_fixer> I have it working with CAD securities bought and sold from CAD accounts. I'm in Canada so everything is CAD except for these USD securities...

10:41:42 <markham_fixer> I think I've got it...
10:42:47 <markham_fixer> Yup, I also had Expenses/Fees/Trading (CAD)
10:43:09 <markham_fixer> and Expenses/Fees/Trading/USD (USD) <-- this was the problem.
10:43:15 <markham_fixer> Thanks for the help!
10:43:38 <warlord> You're welcome.

14:04:09 <kodb> db> good evening; question regarding using invoicing and income accounts
14:04:09 <kodb> <kodb> currently am adding my consulting business invoices to gnucash and getting rid of quickbooks
14:04:09 <kodb> <kodb> my dayjob salary income accounts and transfers are working well but when I set up and pay an invoice the monies transferred to the consulting company income account are casusing me problems
14:04:09 <kodb> <kodb> when i transfer to checking account the income account goes to zero balance and then i can't generate reports or track the income on income expense reports. this does not happen when i create paycheck transactions involving the usual salary account. can anyone help me figure this out? thanks
14:04:11 <kodb> <kodb> or perhaps I should ask "what am I doing wrong" ;)

18:15:04 <jsled> kodb: don't know about the business stuff. the ability to setup a "client/server" configuration is pretty limited.
18:15:27 <jsled> specifically, to networked-filesystem based serialized access to the datafile.
18:15:59 <jsled> so, one user could open the file, input stuff, save and quit, then another in the same group could do so, and so on.
18:17:19 <kodb> that helps; we are looking to put it on our home server so my wife and i can both view and interact but probably not simultaneously. So I can just point the program to the db file located on the server and it should work so long as only one person is accessing at a time?
18:18:38 <jsled> yes. And it will employ a lock file to try and insure that.
18:18:59 <jsled> I'm not certain if that's true with the DB backend in 2.3.x/2.4 but I'd hope it is.
18:19:42 <kodb> thanks jsled this is very helpful: is there someone in particular on the development team that could help me figure out why the transfers through the consulting income account seem to be handled differently than the paycheck split transactions involving the "salary" account from my day job
18:20:06 *** warlord-afk is now known as warlord
18:20:35 <warlord> kodb: re: invoices, it sounds like you're not properly using A/R. When you invoice it's a transaction from income -> A/R. When you're paid you go from A/R -> Checking.
18:20:39 <jsled> you might like to mail the gnucash-user or gnucash-devel mailing list.
18:20:45 <jsled> Or hopefully warlord can help. :)
18:22:39 <kodb> warlord; ok I used the setup invoice druid and then what is happening when I post an invoice there is an amount credited to the A/R account. When invoice paid the $ go to the consulting income account. You are saying I should put directly into the company checking account? Right now when I checked the test account I set up
18:23:15 <kodb> the test invoice showed an amount in A/R but did not debit the income account. is this an account setup problem or is this a problem in how I'm setting the invoice up?
18:24:06 <warlord> a problem in how you're setting the invoice up -- what account(s) did you use in the invoice line items?
18:25:32 <kodb> looking right now back in a sec
18:26:58 <kodb> in the posted invoice there is Income: test. this actually shows the proper debit in the income account. I'm checking to see the payment account now
18:29:02 <kodb> ok, i changed to the test checking account and now looks like processed correctly. Thank you very much for helping point me in the right direction; This is a fantastic program and I am greatly appreciative for the assistance.
18:29:32 <warlord> You're welcome.
18:30:03 <kodb> can I create a temporary account to hold payments into until they are actually deposited? Would I create that as another "checking" account or what would you recommend?
18:31:14 <warlord> Yeah, another asset account, like "Assets:ToBeDeposited"
18:32:07 <kodb> sweet! you have made my month and my poor wife is so happy she can totally abandon Quickbooks and switch over to a single program to handle our personal and small business finances. Many thanks yet again!

19:45:30 <LurkersA> Hey guys, I have a bit of a problem, maybe you can help me. My parents hard drive was corrupted, and 4 years of accounting data from Microsoft Money can now no longer be opened by Microsoft Money. Do you know if there is any way to import the data into GNUcash or alternate software to attempt to recover some of the data? Or am I up sh*t creek without a paddle?
19:51:32 <cortana> LurkersA: have you tried the steps at LurkersA: have you tried anything ?
19:51:33 <cortana> oops

19:52:08 <LurkersA> Not as of yet, thanks for the link
19:52:29 <cortana> i don't know of any tools that can read money files, but some probably exist
19:54:08 <LurkersA> Thanks mate, I'll give this a stab tonight, and I'll pop back tomorrow. Cheers
19:58:08 <cortana> i wish you luck!
19:58:20 <warlord> I dont think gnucash can read a raw Money file -- it's not QIF.
