08:35:07 <ramontayag> Hey all. Quick question. Can't seem to find it on Google. My accountant said I should put expenses from other vendors under bills and vendors. How about petty cash expenses? Where does this fall? It's not under employee expenses either, right? Since petty cash may be used by multiple people. Thanks in advance
08:38:40 *** IanL has quit IRC
08:55:55 <kimmo> petty cash expenses are no different from other expenses, except that when the expense occurs, instead of getting a bill and inserting that split into bills payable, the money comes directly from petty cash
08:57:11 <ramontayag> kimmo: who would the vendor be? or would I just enter it straight into the petty cash account?
08:57:46 <ramontayag> the advantage of having a bill is that we can print it out for someone to approve the petty cash expenses, and thus replenish it
09:00:35 <kimmo> well you should get a receipt for the said petty cash expense
09:01:13 <kimmo> in a sense, it's no different from a bill, except that it's paid immediately instead of spending 2 weeks in the bills payable account
09:19:50 <ramontayag> kimmo: sorry for all the questions. I've used peachtree but that was a long time ago. No accounting background either. What I mean is that at the end of the month, let's say you have 745.00 left from the original 10,000.00 amount. The money-guy looks over the expenses from that month, then checks each expense to see if it makes sense. if it's all clear, the money guy will sign this "bill"...
09:19:52 <ramontayag> ...saying he approves, and issue a check - 9,235.00 worth to make it 10k again. I understand there may be different ways of doing this, if so, I'm open :)
09:20:47 <ramontayag> Where I'm lost is there's nothing to sign since there's no bill to print. Yep, we can do a spreadsheet but does gnucash have a way to print a bill in the manner I explained?
09:42:23 *** warlord-afk is now known as warlord
09:42:34 <warlord> sure, you could do a date-limited register report.
09:49:33 <ramontayag> warlord: hmm.. didn't know that - but that makes sense. :) thanks! :)
09:51:14 <warlord> You're wlecome.
09:51:42 <warlord> Vendor pills are part of A/P.. You only do that when you have a bill that goes through A/P (i.e., you dont pay it out of cash). Petty Cash is NOT A/P

13:15:33 <franz> gnucash (2.2.9 and 2.3.7) on os x gets killed if I try to configure hbci with aqbanking. So I copied the data from a windows installation. But the pin is never asked for and thus hbci doesn't work. How can I at least make it use the pin? In what file can I place it?
13:18:34 <warlord> Did you install the prebuilt OSX or did you build it yourself?

13:19:19 <franz> I only tried the prebuilt versions.

17:08:26 <Selstam> Hi! I'm trying to use GnuCash to enter my mutual fund portfolio, but whatever I enter it changes my "shares" to the price and sets price to 1 (one) ... Is this the way it should work?
17:08:49 *** warlord-afk is now known as warlord
17:09:08 <warlord> edit the account and make sure you have the commodity set correctly.
17:10:56 <Selstam> Can I change the language in GnuCash? RIght now it is in Swedish but I want it in English. (I can't find where to set the commodity since it's all in swedish) .. ;)
17:13:18 <Selstam> Found the language thing on the wiki ...
17:14:17 <warlord> You need to restart with a different environment to change the lang.
17:15:38 <Selstam> Yepp, got it. But where do I set the commodity?
17:16:37 <Selstam> I've got Account name, code, descr, security/currencty, fractions, account type and parent account.
17:16:44 <Selstam> Account type is set to "Mutual Fund"
17:18:48 <Selstam> There must be a step I'm missing here ...
17:19:05 <Selstam> I need to specify all commodities before entering them into the account?
17:20:50 *** daedeloth has quit IRC
17:23:35 <warlord> commodity == security/currency
17:23:51 <warlord> What's the secuity of the account?
17:26:56 <Selstam> I got the security part now ...
17:27:19 <Selstam> Is it general practice to use one account for each "stock" i own?
17:27:48 <warlord> You MUST do that.
17:27:58 <Selstam> That explains it! :)
17:28:02 <warlord> (well, I suppose you could have multiple accounts with the same stock)
17:28:18 <warlord> but yes, you cannot put multiple stocks into 1 account.
17:28:27 <Selstam> Makes sense.
17:28:58 <Selstam> Thanks for the help! Much appreciated! :)

19:14:43 <fbdystang> I am having issues getting the automatic stock update to work for the price editor. I am using Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit, Gnucash 2.2.9. With this command "gnucash --add-price-quotes $HOME/Finances-<my gnucash filename>" I get this http://pastebin.com/m1d9f2e53 any help would be greatly appreciated :)
19:18:22 <warlord> Cool!
19:18:33 <warlord> You should file a bug with Ubuntu
19:18:58 <fbdystang> warlord: is it ubuntu or gnucash?
19:19:48 <warlord> Well, this is the first I've heard of it, so I'd file it with Ubuntu and let them push it upstream to gnucash or guile based on their debugging initial effort.
19:21:58 <fbdystang> OK, I just tried it again and got this http://pastebin.com/m3ce2880f does this mean it actually worked? Thanks warlord
19:22:30 <warlord> Nope, "Aborted" implies it... aborted.
19:23:11 <fbdystang> Dang!! when will ubuntu figure things out? :(
19:23:25 <warlord> I have no idea. I dont use Ubuntu
