21:26:09 <janaus> is there something screwy with windows gnucash? all of a sudden i cant open/parse my files!?
21:41:32 *** Jimraehl has joined #gnucash
21:45:57 *** warlord-afk is now known as warlord
21:46:11 <warlord> janaus: nothing that I know of any more screwy than using windows in the first place.
21:47:16 <janaus> i cant open my data file all of a sudden, it complains about parsing errors :/
21:49:24 <warlord> what changed?
21:49:33 <janaus> thats just it... nothing! :/
21:49:55 <janaus> opened at the start of last month just fine
21:52:15 <janaus> ive managed to uncompress and view the raw xml... it seems to be well formed (well firefox isnt complaing about structure...) ... but now im a bit lost
21:59:08 <warlord> what parsing error does it give?
21:59:14 <warlord> And what does the top of the XML look like?
21:59:32 *** janaus1 has joined #gnucash
22:00:28 <warlord> janaus1: what parsing error does it give? and what does the top of the xml file look like? (please use pastebin for anything more than ~3 lines)O

22:10:27 <janaus1> sry got disconnected
22:10:39 <warlord> i know
22:10:50 <warlord> thats why i re-asked
22:11:20 <janaus1> i just managed to open something
22:11:33 <janaus1> i had to uncompress the data file
22:11:48 <warlord> how are you starting gnucash?
22:11:55 <janaus1> shortcut from windows desktop
22:12:18 <warlord> shortcut to the app?? or to your data file??
22:12:23 <janaus1> to the app
22:12:28 <janaus1> then file open
22:12:30 <warlord> I'm wondering if it's passing some bogus argument.
22:12:46 <warlord> You shouldn't need to file -> open .... Starting gnucash should re-open the data file automatically.
22:13:04 <janaus1> yeah
22:13:05 <janaus1> sry
22:13:08 <janaus1> got a few computers here
22:13:14 <janaus1> i have a laptop which was the original machine
22:13:26 <janaus1> that tries to automatically reopen last file... and comes up with a parse error
22:13:48 <warlord> What file is it trying to open?
22:14:06 <warlord> maybe it got.. confused... Like maybe you did a File -> Save As to a USB drive?
22:16:11 <janaus1> the laptop tries to reopen the main data file (JanPaula) from a smb share
22:16:33 <janaus1> ive tried on a second machine to open gnucash and file open the JanPaula file also via the same smb share
22:16:40 <janaus1> (and a third same thing btw)
22:16:50 <warlord> And does that file on the smb share look okay?
22:16:58 <janaus1> all complain of a parsing error with little other info
22:17:27 <janaus1> if i zcat JanPaula>blah i can then open the blah file
22:17:39 <janaus1> yeah the smb seems fine... i
22:17:43 <warlord> yeah, the parser feedback is less that useful.
22:18:07 <warlord> ???? if you gunzip the file then gnucash opens it?
22:18:22 <janaus1> yes
22:18:30 <janaus1> just double checking on laptop now
22:18:33 <warlord> Oh, well.. then turn off compression.
22:19:55 <warlord> i dont know why it started failing... Save a copy of your compressed data file for later -- maybe we can track it down... sounds like it might be a minor bug in the win32 zlib dependency.
22:21:49 <janaus1> ok this is a bit confusing....
22:21:51 <janaus1> the laptop
22:21:57 <janaus1> let me start again...
22:22:04 <janaus1> in a copy of the data
22:22:14 <janaus1> ive zcat JanPaula > JanPaulaUnzip
22:22:22 <janaus1> then mv JanPaulaUnzip JanPaula
22:22:28 <janaus1> the laptop cannot open this file
22:22:40 <janaus1> however a fresh gnucash install on a new installed win machine can
22:22:50 <janaus1> the fresh gnucash also has the parsing prob
22:24:41 <warlord> sorry, i'm being slow tonight.. i lost track of what's working and what's not.
22:24:57 <janaus1> the fresh install on an unzipped data file seems ok
22:25:19 <warlord> but the old install on the unzipped data file is not okay?
22:25:22 <janaus1> the original install ona laptop can't open the unzipped data either
22:25:41 <janaus1> would i need to unzip any of the .xac files also?
22:26:02 <warlord> no, the .xac files are just backups.
22:26:11 <janaus1> thats what i thought
22:26:11 <warlord> you only need the main data file.
22:26:38 <warlord> What version of gnucash are you using.... I did track down a win32-specific parser bug a few weeks ago (although I dont think I fixed it -- just found it)
22:30:13 <janaus1> well i think... all 2.2.9 windows
22:30:16 <warlord> (I'm afraid I dont recall when I did that research -- or where)
22:30:28 <warlord> (( maybe gnucash-devel ))
22:30:40 <janaus1> my fresh install on a fresh machine is the only one that can open the data file right now
22:30:57 <janaus1> my regular workstation is also showing the same prob
22:31:22 *** JimRaehl2 has left #gnucash
22:31:29 <warlord> Anything printed into the gnucash.trace file?
22:31:56 <janaus1> oh hoh....
22:32:01 <janaus1> i think my fresh install is 2.3.7
22:32:18 <janaus1> wheres the gnucash.trace file show up in win32?
22:32:19 <warlord> Oh, well that's not a fair comparrison.
22:32:31 <janaus1> no its not, i thought i was using 2.2.9 everywhere
22:32:32 <warlord> I have no clue. I dont use Windows.
22:32:41 <warlord> TMPDIR?
22:35:52 <janaus1> $USER$\Appdata\Local\Temp fyi :)
22:37:24 <janaus1> its quite big
22:37:25 <janaus1> lots of
22:37:40 <janaus1> ugh i cant paste it
22:37:49 <warlord> use pastepin?
22:37:56 <janaus1> xaccSplitSetACcount: assertion 's && acc' failed
22:39:01 <warlord> well, that could be a real issue....
22:39:45 <janaus1> 1 sec
22:39:48 <warlord> but if you had the data file working.... you had to do something that caused it to fail. it's not going to just fail on its own.. you had to have entered new data, or something.
22:39:59 <warlord> (fyi, i'm going to need to go to bed soon)
22:40:21 <janaus1> ok
22:40:22 <janaus1> here
22:40:26 <janaus1> ugh
22:40:31 <janaus1> goddamn cut and paste from rdp sux
22:40:40 <janaus1> http://pastebin.com/d20e7ecf5
22:40:51 <warlord> maybe if you used a real os instead of that m$ crap..
22:40:53 <warlord> ;)
22:41:01 <janaus1> ok i DEFINATELY havent hadded anything in this file since last month when i did my monthly accounts
22:41:20 <janaus1> i tried to open up today to do my next monthly accounts
22:41:24 <janaus1> and got a parse error
22:41:24 <warlord> You daved the file with 2.3.x
22:41:26 <warlord> saved
22:41:37 <janaus1> no... i didnt use 2.3 until trying to fix this prob
22:41:56 <janaus1> if its tagged 2.3 its because of the last few mins of playing
22:42:35 <warlord> This means you were using 2.3.x: * CRIT <gnc.io> [gnc_xml_set_data()] Unhandled tag: act:hidden
22:42:35 <janaus1> i can undo that one sec
22:42:46 <warlord> Go back to a .xac backup file.
22:43:44 <warlord> The hidden and placeholder flags are a 2.3-ism...
22:44:51 <warlord> so go back to backup files... maybe go back to the last one that actually opens and figure out what's different between that one and the first one that doesn't open?
22:47:02 <janaus1> ok http://pastebin.com/m59d1c0e3
22:47:23 <janaus1> is a trace of trying to open the original data file, after unzipping on a 2.2.9 gnucash
22:49:39 <warlord> Same thing.. Still showing the act:hidden tags -- those are all 2.3-isms
22:49:59 <warlord> are you SURE you didn't accidentally open the file with 2.3.x and resave back out?
22:59:18 <janaus1> well im almost certain :( ... but maybe i did :/
23:01:01 <warlord> 2.3.x is a test series. There are many issues, and one is that it created broken XML. That's been fixed, but you'll have to back out to an older .xac backup to recover.
23:07:01 <janaus1> thanks for your help... ill see what old copies i have around
23:08:14 <warlord> Check all your .xac files.
23:18:37 <warlord> anyways, bedtime for me
