04:26:58 <tamro> Hello! I have problems using gnucash 2.2.9 under ubuntu 9.10. Online actions do not work. I read that i'm not alone with that, but can't found a solution. Is there any help?

15:31:29 <Simpleton> Hello People! I'm using GnuCash 3.2.5 on windows. I've read most of the manual but I'm still having trouble to start my home budget there. I've gotta register how much I owe to my creditcard, my bank account and all other liabilities... So the question is: Since I still don't know where I'll get the money to pay these debts, how should I deal with the transference field?
15:33:35 <Simpleton> I've been trying to use it as if I was taking money out of my equity and into the accounts I owe. But, for example, when I put a debit on my credit card account, my equity actually increses
15:33:37 *** vitoc has joined #gnucash
15:36:23 *** ecolitan has quit IRC
15:41:49 <kimmo> Simpleton, you should have a single equity type account "Opening Balances"
15:42:06 <kimmo> (And I hope you mean 2.2.5, cause my advice only goes up to 2.2.9)
15:42:43 <Simpleton> ooops... 2.3.5
15:43:27 <kimmo> I haven't delved into the 2.3 versions yet, but I'd imagine the team hasn't made any drastic changes in bookkeeping fundamentals ;)
15:43:46 <kimmo> so the Opening Balances is still what you should have
15:44:04 <Simpleton> yes... i have that account
15:44:39 <kimmo> ok now when you open the books, all transactions should be either to or from that account
15:45:05 <kimmo> in a sense, you can think of that account as your net worth during book opening
15:45:17 <Simpleton> I think I'm understanding my problem a bit better now: my liabilities:Accounts payable/credit card does not add up to it's parent (liabilities:accounts payable
15:46:26 <Simpleton> oh, ok. I'll try again keeping that in mind. Thanks for the advice
15:46:36 <kimmo> Simpleton, in most bookkeeping schemes (aka account trees), only the leaf accounts ever get transactions. The "Liabilities" account is simply there to group them together and make it easier for you to visualize them
15:47:57 <Simpleton> Yes, but in the account tree, liability displays the total of my liability:A/P. I thougth it would add Liability:a/p:credit card to that total
15:48:16 <kimmo> it should
15:48:37 <Simpleton> strange... it doesn't change according to what I do with the credit card account
15:48:42 <Simpleton> for example
15:49:17 <Simpleton> I transferred $170 for the creditcard to a expenses:misc
15:49:30 <Simpleton> but that didn't increase my liability
15:49:50 <Simpleton> *from creditcard to expenses:misc
15:50:11 <kimmo> that's strange, unless the expenses account is mistakenly also under liabilities, or if they have different currencies
15:51:47 <warlord> different currencies?
15:52:15 <Simpleton> nope... sorry... I explained wrong
15:52:31 <Simpleton> I mean, my equity doesn't change when my liability increases
15:52:40 <kimmo> on the bottom row?
15:52:56 <kimmo> the "Grand total: Assets: Profits" one?
15:53:06 <warlord> Simpleton: correct, the equity accounts wont change. If you want your instantaneous equity you need to run a Balance Sheet.
15:53:27 <Simpleton> ohhh... ok. Thats understood then
15:53:54 <Simpleton> but how come my creditcard debt shows as a profit in the bottom row, now that you mentioned
15:54:12 <warlord> Maybe you entered it backwards?
15:54:38 <kimmo> warlord: btw, speaking of the summary row, my Grand Total is blank, although assets and profits show what I'd expect them to?
15:54:51 <Simpleton> I entered it in the right column... should it be in the left?
15:56:13 <Simpleton> nope... can't be in the left column, because that would decrease my total liability
15:56:19 <warlord> Simpleton: the right or left column of which account? (which did you have open?)
15:56:33 <kimmo> Simpleton, if you're not a professional accountant, I suggest you set Edit -> Preference -> Accounts tab -> Uncheck the "Use formal accounting labels"
15:57:03 <Simpleton> the liabilities:A/P:Creditcard
15:57:53 <Simpleton> thanks kimmo, but the terms are already in laymen language. the thing is, since mine is in portuguese, I'm translating the terms for you using those I studied in the documentation
15:57:54 <kimmo> Charges on credit cards go to the right hand column all right
15:57:57 <warlord> that should be correct.
15:58:11 <kimmo> I hate translated software :(
15:59:07 <warlord> LOL
15:59:17 <warlord> Users always want it in their own darn language...
15:59:19 <warlord> Silly users..
15:59:19 <warlord> ;)
15:59:27 <Simpleton> :D
15:59:37 <kimmo> my wife looks at me weird when I always request english language manuals
16:00:01 <kimmo> I had to go to great lengths to get an english language winXP on my locally bought eeepc
16:00:14 <kimmo> the thing is, I can't understand the translations
16:00:22 <Simpleton> well... The only doubt I have left is this... why is it the the value in my liabilities:A/P:Creditcard shows as profit in the accounsts tree window's bottom?
16:01:26 <warlord> sorry, Simpleton, I dont know. The status bar math has always eluded me.
16:01:46 <Simpleton> and I tried registering that value in the right and then in the left column.... in both cases, the same value remians as profit
16:02:25 <kimmo> Simpleton, click on the status bar, its actually a pull down menu
16:03:33 <Simpleton> I already tried that... it gives me two rows to choose from, both showing the same profit
16:04:01 <Simpleton> but I'm pretty sure I have not profits at all :) in in the creditcard, not anywhere else :D
16:04:20 <Simpleton> *not in the creditcard
16:04:23 <kimmo> but it's relatively useless at least for me, since I have all my income/expense accounts grouped under one master account so the total profit is already visible there, plus I have my equity accounts set as liability accounts (for a reason, too), so the assets always equals that, too
16:05:53 <Simpleton> lol... and I thought that the hard part had been gathering all my data from the paper
16:06:38 <Simpleton> I'll bang my head on it a little longer. Maybe I can figure out what I'm doing wrong
16:08:01 <kimmo> I make regular use of the balance sheet and income statement reports
16:08:42 <kimmo> warlord, in 1.4 and 1.6 there were line graphs on single account balance against time, that's not available or in the works now is it?
16:09:15 <warlord> kimmo: nope, Goffice didn't have line graphs when we migrated.
16:09:53 <kimmo> mmmkay

19:51:48 <kimmo> hrm, 2.3.7 says pkg-config can't find my libgtkhtml-3.14
19:52:13 <kimmo> (and it's right, it doesn't find it...)
19:59:56 <kimmo> stupid fedora borken packages

20:07:54 <kimmo> new CPUs never cease to amaze me when first compiling new stuff
20:23:59 <kimmo> runnin 2.3.7 now
20:27:39 <kimmo> warlord, did I ever submit a bug report on general ledger showing empty transactions for each open account (The blanks at the end of each)?
20:28:57 <kimmo> same thing happens in 2.3.7 also, first ran into it in 2.2.4 I think (I'm not that big into upgrading things that work fine with no major unworkaroundable bugs)
20:29:48 <kimmo> oh well, time to hit the sack, perhaps tomorrow I can test my .scm in 2.3.7 (Couldn't get trunk or 2.3 branch to build but I guess that was to be expected?)
