01:21:40 <rperry> I'm new to gnucash and don't understand how to match imported transactions. For example, how do I match a credit card payment in my checking account to the same transaction in my credit card account if the descriptions for the transactions are different?

09:49:36 <vollkorn> Hi, I'm recently updated to the latest 2.2.9 in Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty and HBCI with PIN/TAN.
09:50:19 <vollkorn> Fetching transaction information from my previosuly set up account works, but I can't send any transactions anymore.
09:52:19 <vollkorn> I just do as I did with 2.2.6 when it worked: Selecting my account connected to HBCI, Actions, Online Actions, Issue Transaction.
09:52:49 <vollkorn> Fill in the form, select a account to book to (expenses:bla:blubb) and hit "OK"
09:53:43 <vollkorn> But then there is no sign of any HBCI connection to my bank, no PIN/TAN dialog etc and I'm straight back to gnucashs main window.
09:54:32 <vollkorn> The transaction shows up in my account but was not issued as I checked with the bank (I never gave a TAN, so obviously...)
09:55:02 <vollkorn> I started gnucash in a console to see if there is any output, but it isn't.
09:55:42 <vollkorn> Right now I'm a little confused b/c getting transactions for the same account works just fine
09:56:13 <vollkorn> Can you please help me to find out what's wrong here and help to fix it? TIA

11:36:30 <warlord> vollkorn: try asking on the gnucash-de mailing list?
11:37:22 <vollkorn> warlord: Okay, I'll try there.
11:37:41 <warlord> Sorry, but HBCI is german-only, so none of us really get to use it.
11:37:48 <warlord> @nick gncbot
11:37:48 *** gncbot` is now known as gncbot
11:37:57 <warlord> jsled, linas: could one of you op gncbot?
11:39:52 <vollkorn> I see. Just out of curiosity where do most devs live and which technology do they use to connect to their bank? I'd guess it's US and OFX?
11:41:23 <warlord> Yeah.. (although OFX is readonly)
11:43:40 <vollkorn> Oh, so there is no comfortable way to use GnuCash to issue transactions?
11:43:51 <vollkorn> With most US banks I meant?
11:45:36 <warlord> There is no way at all to initiate a transaction from GnuCash in anywhere but Germany.
11:45:37 <blizgerg> none of my banks support anything other than downloading transactions in a file as far as I know...
11:50:20 *** jsled sets mode: +o gncbot
11:53:21 <warlord> @op
11:53:21 *** gncbot sets mode: +o warlord
11:53:23 <warlord> Thanks, jsled
11:55:15 <blizgerg> What type of structure is thought of as good for something like a treasury bill (where I buy it for some amount and then it gets sold for more a few weeks later)?
11:56:23 <warlord> Um... an asset. you buy it for $x and sell it for $y making $y-x in income
11:56:41 <warlord> Just like buying a car for $100 and selling it for $1000.
11:56:48 <warlord> I would treat it the same way.
11:57:50 <vollkorn> worlord, blitzberg: that's sad to hear. What about other banking software? Do they use screensraping or other things to make them work with US banks?
11:58:36 <blizgerg> Ah
12:02:55 <warlord> vollkorn: none that I know of.
12:03:03 <warlord> (doing so would require a lot of work, for EACH BANK)
12:04:29 <vollkorn> I know, that's why I was wondering.
12:04:52 <vollkorn> We have some software doing it here with the handful banks that does not use standard gateways as HBCI
12:05:45 <vollkorn> Is there no standards or do banks just not want to suppport them? I mean, why is it like that? It's so great, safe and convenient doing transactions from your finance software.
12:15:55 <cortana> vollkorn: it's extra risk for the banks i suspect
12:16:21 <cortana> most people can barely operate the bank's standard web interface, i don't think they want the extra tech support costs for people using third party software to access their accounts
12:37:49 <vollkorn> Hm, economic and security reasons.
12:37:52 <vollkorn> Too bad.
12:38:08 <vollkorn> And I guess not much you can do about it.
13:13:47 *** shade304 has joined #gnucash
13:20:23 <shade304> what is the correct procedure for importing a customer or vendor qsf file that has been exported from another company?
13:30:32 <cortana> vollkorn: well, those are the excuses i'd expect them to give if asked. basically it's just down to laziness i think
13:31:57 <vollkorn> I guess they won't tell you they don't do it because of expected extra tech support even or especialy if it's true.
13:32:26 <cortana> yeah, i'm just speculating
13:32:33 <vollkorn> So I think it sounds reasonable. It's extra costs and doesn't give them any advantages.
13:32:39 <cortana> and since no bank offers it, no other bank is at a competitive disadvantage
13:41:56 <warlord> shade304: none. there is no QSF import.
13:42:21 <shade304> thankyou
13:42:51 <shade304> what is the best way to import a vendor list (name, addr, ph, fax)
13:54:04 <warlord> shade304: type it in, one at a time.
