07:22:06 <sidfn> hi, anyone has a sample gnucash file? with around 15 transactions..
07:23:16 <warlord> There are some examples in the source tree.. Otherwise, you could easily build up such an example file yourself pretty quickly.
07:24:42 <sidfn> was wondering.. from where the money for income, comes..
07:25:05 <sidfn> help mentioned employer r u.. what is that?
07:25:54 <warlord> It's a transaction from Income:Salary -> Assets:Checking
07:26:45 <sidfn> where does the money for Income:Salary come from?
07:27:56 <warlord> "Income" (and "Expense") accounts are Magic.. They are the Sources and Sinks of money into the system.
07:28:01 <warlord> Income *IS* the source.
07:28:06 <sidfn> ooo
07:28:21 <warlord> It keeps track of how much money comes in.. (and Expense keeps track of how much money goes out)
07:28:22 <sidfn> that means we can transact any amount of money from it.. right?
07:28:29 <warlord> Yes
07:28:37 <sidfn> like a safe with ininite money..
07:28:39 <sidfn> good..
07:28:59 <warlord> More like an employer... which an infinite amount of money.
07:29:07 <sidfn> thanks
07:29:16 <warlord> A safe would be an Asset. You already OWN the safe/money..
07:29:22 <sidfn> hehe
07:29:32 <warlord> Whereas an employer... It's not your money until they give it to you.. And THAT is Income.
07:29:56 <sidfn> ook
07:33:10 <sidfn> but when i add a transaction, a new account is created with 'orphan-CUR'

07:37:07 <warlord> sidfn: that's because you're not supplying the /other/ accounts.
07:37:23 <warlord> Have you read the Concepts and Tutorial Guide ?
07:37:29 <sidfn> er..yea
07:37:32 <warlord> Anyways, I'm afraid I need to take off...
07:37:44 <warlord> It sounds like you're not supplying the correct "transfer account"
07:38:15 <warlord> IMHO gnucash is best understood if you do all your transaction entry from Assets or Liabilities.. E.g., if you do it from your Checking account, from your Cash account, or from your Credit Card account.
07:38:16 <sidfn> what should it be? i added a transaction of income 700$ for Income:Salary
07:38:19 <warlord> It's just easier to think about it that way.
07:38:29 <warlord> What account did you do that from?
07:38:50 <sidfn> it was blank.
07:38:53 <warlord> Transactions are all about money FLOW.. Money flows FROM some account TO another account.
07:39:00 <sidfn> yes..exactly
07:39:02 <warlord> You need to specify both..
07:39:17 <warlord> One account is the account you open. The Register Account.
07:39:17 <sidfn> but for an income salary.. the money comes from employer..
07:39:27 <warlord> The other is the account you need to enter as the Transfer Account.
07:39:40 <warlord> No.. the Income:Salary REPRESENTS your employer...
07:39:46 <warlord> When they PAY you, where does the money go?
07:39:51 <sidfn> checking
07:40:00 <warlord> Then that's your transfer account ...
07:40:10 <warlord> Anyways, I'm late. Bue.
07:40:11 <warlord> bye
07:40:12 <sidfn> so, i must not add a transaction that puts money to Income:Salary..

15:34:01 <jcarter> I'm using a Mac (OS/X 10.5.8) and still limping along with gnucash 2.2.9. I just noticed that 2.3.3 is available. I installed gnucash with fink, and fink only knows about 2.2.9. I have tried compiling gnucash in the past with no success which is why I went to fink. Any suggestions?
15:34:39 <jsled> 2.2.9 is current stable. 2.3.3 is the unstable dev series.
15:34:49 <jcarter> Thanks.
