06:33:34 <slight> is there any way to easily see which invoice a payment in a checking account corresponds to? That is, a payment that was entered with the 'process payment' option in th business menu
06:33:59 <slight> currently i'm just seeing the client name
06:34:29 <slight> and using the 'jump' option on it takes me to credit control but there's no indication there of which invoice the payment was for either

15:52:43 <warlord> jsled: so why vmware? Because I've used it, I'm comfortable with the technology, ...
15:53:03 <jsled> good reasons. :)
15:53:56 <warlord> I didn't want to spend time learning KVM.
15:54:57 <warlord> I also knew that vmware provided web-based remote console and I just haven't played with kvm enough to know it could/would provide that.
15:55:51 <jsled> It looks like the big problem with OSX guests is licensing? At least as of 2007?
15:56:30 <jsled> And as of Random Forum Comments as of 2008, as wel.
15:56:32 <warlord> Yeah, that's why I can't make an OS X VM
15:56:56 <warlord> It would be illegal to do that.

18:59:08 <sabqat9> anyone have any tips on security issues with gnucash?
18:59:19 <sabqat9> i heard about security issues with temp files
18:59:25 <sabqat9> i am running on windows xp
19:02:46 <warlord> what kind of security issues are you concerned about?

19:49:48 <jsled> there was an advisory about the /tmp issue *ages* ago.
19:49:53 <jsled> (though he's gone)
19:50:03 <jsled> but it was for /tmp/gnucash.trace ... hardly a huge deal.

23:02:58 <Rats> I have a user question about gnucash on windows. Is this the proper place or is there a newbies channel? I've browsed the documentation and it didn't answer my question.
23:10:38 <jsled> this is a proper place to ask.
23:12:29 <Rats> What's the best way to edit the "Account Summary" report to include only a specific date range or a selectable date range?
23:13:52 <jsled> The Account Summary does not show a time range, but a Summary as of a given date.
23:14:19 <Rats> how do I adjust the given date?
23:14:32 <Rats> essentially I want the report to show an account summary as of Jan first of each year
23:15:03 <jsled> the report options ... either the second-from-last toolbar icon, or Edit > Report Options menu
23:15:35 <Rats> excellent. I will look now!
23:17:14 <Rats> that doesn't seem to do what I want, I can make it stop at a date, but can't choose a start date, seems to always start at the date the account was created
23:17:20 <jsled> right.
23:17:30 <jsled> the account summary report perhaps isn't the report you want.
23:17:49 <Rats> The data in it is exactly what I need, but I need to filter just this year
23:17:59 <Rats> if there is a better report or a way to edit that report I'd be golden
23:19:47 <jsled> what data are you looking for?
23:20:21 <jsled> What would it mean to have the account "balance" for a time range of data?
23:20:31 <jsled> Maybe you instead want a Cash Flow report?
23:20:45 <jsled> Which details the flows in/out of a set of accounts in a time range?
23:21:46 <Rats> It's being used to track the income and expenses for a Girl Scout Troop. So I need the income and expenses and all split accounts under those 2 since year-start
23:23:34 <Rats> As a temporary workaround, I have created split accounts with the daterange in the name. But since this has been going for 4 years now, I have 2006-Camping, 2006-Candy, (7 different types) for 4 different years
23:24:09 <Rats> so when I assign a transaction to an account, the list needs to scroll, and I've assigned them to the wrong account accidentally due to that, and that is hard to track down if you don't catch it immediately
23:24:20 <jsled> You can try the book closing support to separate out the years into datafiles.
23:24:32 <jsled> But, yeah, this is a bit of a weakness in gnucash.
23:24:39 <jsled> Alternatively, the Cash Flow report sounds like what you want.
23:24:53 <Rats> I will look at that one
23:26:33 <Rats> That does what I need
23:26:50 <Rats> Now I need to go through and merge the accounts to clean up the drop down list
23:32:52 *** localhost has joined #gnucash
23:35:09 <Rats> jsled, you have been a good help. Thank you very much. I think the best solution for getting rid of those extra accounts without adjusting every entry manually is to just create a new Book and keep this one for archived data.
23:35:20 <Rats> the cash flow report is exactly what I was looking for.
23:35:23 <Rats> Thanks for your time!
23:35:38 <jsled> Rats: you're welcome. cheers.
