09:10:19 <mattt> I have a question about reports in gnucash - hoping someone can help me? I'm running version 2.2.7.
09:10:34 <mattt> What I'd like is to see a summary of activity in all of my expense accountws for a given calendar month.
09:10:57 <mattt> Sorry, a summary (or balance?) for _each_ of my expense accounts for a given month.
09:11:17 <mattt> Does a report already exist that I can configure to do this for me?
09:11:25 <mattt> I've tried a few out, but so far haven't found one.

09:22:20 <mattt> OK, I've just tried the "Transaction report", and it's pretty close to what I want.
09:22:43 <mattt> It's listing "Total for April 2009" for the selected accounts, which is perfect.
09:23:07 <mattt> But it's also listing each individual transaction, which I'd like ot get rid of...
09:46:10 <cortana> mattt: maybe a cash flow report?
09:46:42 <cortana> in the report options, you can limit the dates and accounts that it will run over
10:14:01 <mattt> OK, thanks. I'll give that a try.

10:17:24 <warlord> mattt: Try the Income Statement
10:17:35 <warlord> cortana: the cash flow isn't what he wants.
10:17:58 <warlord> That tells you the influx/outflow of money into/outof a set of accounts, which isn't what you're looking for.

10:29:57 <cortana> oh i misunderstood--thanks
10:31:02 <lenscape> my accounts list has something called: Emoulements

12:45:08 <asqui> If I am using an intermediate account to split up the cost of a future expense over multiple accounting periods (months) can I still balance the "real" transactions in the source account against a bank statement?
12:49:11 <asqui> (For example, how can I avoid the synthetic transaction to transfer some partial sum to my intermediate account causing a discrepancy with the official account statement.)
12:53:37 <warlord> asqui: you'd still have your Bank -> <Holding> account, so that would be the one you reconcile.
12:53:55 <warlord> There's no way to reconcile the <Holding> -> Expense (depreciation?) transactions.
13:09:42 *** ErKa has joined #gnucash
13:18:28 <asqui> I don't understand.
13:21:52 <asqui> If my actual transaction is an annual cost of $1,200 Assets:BankAccount -> Expenses:Foo in January, is it possible to split this into 12 monthly transactions of $100, without losing the ability to balance a monthly statement for "BankAccount" (which lacks the synthetic $100 transaction, but instead has an annual $1,200 transaction in January)?
13:22:29 *** MechtiIde has joined #gnucash
13:23:09 <warlord> asqui: yes, by using an intermediary account, so you'd do Assets:BankAccount -> Intermediary for $1200, then each month create a transaction from Intermediary -> Expenses:Foo for $100

14:44:02 <warlord> In theory.
14:44:11 <warlord> (i've had issues creating new SXes)
14:44:27 <OsamaK> past ones?
14:45:48 <jsled> OsamaK: yes
14:46:31 <OsamaK> Is it better with the new beta version?
14:46:33 <jsled> I just created a new file, created a monthly 25th SX start date 1/1/2009, ran since last run, 5 transactions show up, [x] Review created, Ok, and 5 are there.
14:46:48 <jsled> I'm using 2.2.9; it's always supported creating transactions in the past.
14:47:17 <OsamaK> let me test yours.

15:48:16 <mwic> anyone ever done a networked gnucash installation? By that I mean two different clients would have access to the same datafiles?
15:53:58 <warlord> mwic: how are you sharing the data file?
15:54:14 <mwic> i'm not yet; looking for advice on how
15:54:15 <warlord> note that gnucash only supports serialized access to the data file, so only 1 user/client can access the data file at a time.
15:54:20 <mwic> i was thinking vanlla subversion
15:54:36 <mwic> right, i'd only access from one machine at a time, but i want them synced
15:54:53 <warlord> Why not use an NFS share?
15:55:29 <mwic> 'cause one machine's at the office and the other's at home.. so just SSH access

I did look in the security editor and verified each security is set to update from Yahoo, and the securities do update in the account list and income statement - just not in the balance sheet.
17:50:52 <warlord> It's on the "Commodities" page of the report options
17:53:57 <JR9-9> warlord: That was it. I had it set on "average cost" instead of "most recent." Thank you. By the way, this is a great program. Very stable and it has simplified my financial life.

18:01:26 <Lin> btw, im working with ubuntu 9.04 gnucash
18:09:23 <jsled> Lin: the current dev release has support for a generic database backend.

18:09:58 <Lin> 2.2.6 isnt the current dev release right?
18:10:02 <Lin> jsled: ok.
18:10:31 <Lin> but what do you mean about generic db backend? gnome-gda?
