12:09:42 <balbi> hi all, is there a way to access a cell's value when using split transactions ?
12:09:54 *** warlord has joined #gnucash
12:10:01 <balbi> i mean, imagine i wanna create a scheduled transaction for my monthly income
12:11:04 <balbi> so I could, as in Ooo calc, access the value in that cell by referring to it, or if I could do something like: income=10 and use the variable income to calculate tax and other stuff
12:11:52 <jsled> the expression parser does have some support for that, but I'm not sure how solid it is.
12:12:54 <balbi> how to use it ? I can test it, for sure ;-)
12:12:59 <jsled> But, yeah, you should be able to do assignments like that. The scheduled transactions stuff will also interpret any character string as an ad-hoc variable, and will prompt you for the value when the transaction comes true.
12:13:01 <jsled> s/true/due/
12:13:04 <balbi> i'm not really good in scheme :-p
12:13:21 <jsled> scheme has pretty much nothing to do with it.
12:13:38 <balbi> yeah... but I don't wanna have to tell gnucash my monthly income every month :-p
12:13:40 <jsled> I believe the syntax is 'income=10', as you say.
12:13:52 <balbi> hmm... cool, will try
12:14:04 <balbi> just a sec
12:14:31 <jsled> balbi: for completeness: http://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/FAQ#Q:_How_do_I_use_variables_and_formula_in_scheduled_transactions.3F
12:15:00 <linas> warlord I'm in the directory, but I'm not sure how to unlock it ...
12:16:21 <balbi> it says it can't balance the transaction
12:16:41 <balbi> jsled: i was reading that and found no references to initialized variable
12:16:53 <warlord> linas: 'svn cleanup'
12:17:26 <linas> done
12:17:50 <linas> in that directory .. maybe I should run it in the base dir?
12:22:02 <balbi> hmm... didn't help.. income=10 doesn't work
12:22:34 <warlord> Yeah, run it in the base dir.. Then let me know and I'll try to kick it from here.
12:22:47 <balbi> jsled: any other hint ??
12:23:10 <jsled> balbi: lemme take a quick try
12:23:28 <balbi> cool, tks
12:23:45 <balbi> i also tried income:=10 but that broke the parser, hehe :-p
12:24:01 <warlord> yeah, := isn't valid.
12:24:36 <jsled> yeah, and it doesn't even look like 'a=10' works in the normal register.
12:24:57 <balbi> that'd be really useful to add for sure ;-)
12:25:24 <balbi> how about <=
12:25:27 <balbi> like vhdl
12:25:48 <jsled> So, you can have the SX code work with formula if you: a) have it solicit you for the value every month or b) add a function that either returns the value and use that in the expressions.
12:25:53 <jsled> The syntax is irrelevant.
12:26:39 <balbi> hmm... guess i'll go for the second one 'till gnucash supports initializing a variable from the register itself
12:26:49 <balbi> how would that look like in scheme ?
12:27:09 <balbi> well, tutorials on the web
12:27:11 <jsled> So to (b) specifically, if you added (define (gnc:salary 1234)) to your ~/.gnucash/config.user, then you could do "(gnc:salary) * 0.75" in the template transaction.
12:27:22 <jsled> Or, something like that. /me handwaves
12:28:07 <balbi> cool, thanks jsled
12:29:03 <linas> warlord done
12:29:25 <warlord> thanks, linas
12:29:40 <warlord> Damn, still have the problem:
12:29:41 <warlord> svn: Working copy 'docs/v1.6/C/image' locked
12:30:06 <warlord> Can you watch the port knocker logs?
12:30:15 <linas> sure the lock is not somwehre else?
12:31:46 <warlord> Yeah, I'm pretty sure. I get it as a result of the port knocker command to ping you.
12:33:39 <linas> al right one moment, I'm in two other chat windows too
12:34:01 <warlord> no worries. I suspect it's been like this for weeks. What's a few more minutes? ;)

13:23:20 <linas> ok, I think i got it to work.
13:23:40 <linas> couple of quick remarks: for me the gnucash website displays with large fonts
13:23:49 <linas> a few sizes larger than "normal"
13:24:04 <linas> and because of this, it doesn't "fit" in the window
13:24:20 <linas> instead, it shows all the menues on the left, and a lot of whitespace
13:24:34 <linas> and then scrolling down a long long ways, all of the main text
13:24:42 <linas> can someone fix this?
13:25:48 <warlord> The site looks okay to me.
13:26:26 <linas> try narrowing your window and you should get the same effect
13:27:03 <linas> anyway .. somehow, for me, the fonts used on gnucash.org are a few font-sizes bigger than any other website out there ...
13:28:46 <warlord> Hmm...
13:30:36 <jsled> We specify a general "font-family: sans-serif", hopefully with no explicit sizing. So, whatever default Sans-Serify font your browser is configured for should be used.
13:31:06 <jsled> If you have firebug installed (presuming you're using Firefox), you can get it to tell you exactly what's being computed for the style.
13:32:23 <jsled> If I make the window very narrow, it reflows as I'd expect it to.
13:32:28 <jsled> linas: what browser are you using?
13:33:06 <linas> firefox, with pretty much no addons or toolbars, plain jane
13:33:18 <warlord> what version?
13:33:20 <jsled> Ah. If I bump the font scaling up a few notches, then narrow the window, I get the effect you're talking about.
13:34:01 <jsled> linas: in Edit > Preferences > Content > Fonts & Colors > Advanced, what're the sizes mentioned?
13:35:03 <jsled> also, please verify that View > Zoom > Reset doesn't fix anything.
13:35:43 <linas> size 20 for serif, size 16 for monospace
13:36:12 <linas> err, size 20 for proportional no size for serif
13:36:34 <jsled> yes, that is large.
13:36:41 *** hvx has joined #gnucash
13:38:24 <warlord> Wow, 20pt is a VERY large font.
13:38:24 <jsled> It's common practice for websites to use a "reset" CSS file that will completely obliterate your browser's settings, then define every detail of the site, ususally starting with a 10px font.
13:38:24 <warlord> I hate those sites.
13:38:24 <jsled> I think overriding the user's configuration is silly, which is why we don't do it. :)
13:38:50 <linas> hmm. I guess every website I go do overrides, since I only see this on gnucash.
13:39:06 <linas> and its not too bad, other than the flow problemm
13:39:13 <jsled> I'd imagine they do. It's a really very common technique.
13:39:35 <jsled> Or, if not a full reset stylesheet, people at least do BODY { font-size: 10px; } or font-size:11pt; or whatever.
13:39:40 <linas> ohh yuck
13:40:09 <linas> I just changed default prefs to 18 from 20, and *every* window got these teeny fonts
13:40:15 <jsled> There's a couple of magical values that exploit particulars of how big Arials is on IE/Win to make CSS "math" easier.
13:40:17 <linas> which totally suck
13:40:40 <linas> back to 20 it is
13:41:49 <linas> 10 pixel-hgih fonts would be utterly unreadable on my display
13:42:01 <linas> a teensy blur.
