00:49:09 * ofish says Hi.
00:50:14 <ofish> I am playing around gnucash to see how to go about using it on Debian. Started gnucash from the command line, made some accounts, but now the window is not responding (menus do not work, cannot close it, etc.) but it is being refreshed and tooltips show up. Anybody know what could be wrong?
00:53:25 <ofish> Crap, there was an autosave pref window in the background that had stole the focus from gnucash. Sorry for the noise.

09:51:29 <apadner> anybody in here?
09:51:54 <warlord> Look at the list -- there are dozens of people here.
09:54:43 <apadner> lol
09:54:54 <apadner> are you all small business owners?
09:55:03 <warlord> No
09:55:08 <warlord> Most people are not.
09:57:01 <apadner> oh ok
09:57:12 <apadner> wo what do you guys talk about in this room
09:57:15 <apadner> ?
09:58:05 <warlord> GnuCsah
09:58:07 <warlord> GnuCash
09:58:27 <warlord> Ahh, I see, the /topic is empty.

09:58:47 *** jsled changes topic to "Free GPL Personal and Small Business Accounting || Please don't ask to ask, just ask and wait! || publically-logged channel || latest stable: 2.2.9"
09:59:18 <warlord> Thanks, jsled. I was just looking in my logs for it.
09:59:57 <apadner> what is GNuCash?
10:00:04 <warlord> apadner: www.gnucash.org
10:00:33 <jsled> Well, it's "Free GPL Personal and Small Business Accounting [Software]".
10:01:35 <apadner> ok
10:01:55 <apadner> how does it compare to quickbooks and peachtree?
10:03:02 <warlord> it's free.
10:06:29 <apadner> ok
10:10:16 <warlord> apadner: I suggest you read the website, read the wiki, and then if you have specific questions that aren't answered come and ask them.
10:16:16 <apadner> i didnt know this was a tech support site
10:16:27 <apadner> i thought it was a regular chatroom
10:17:45 <jsled> it's a mix of chat, support and dev … for gnucash.
10:23:50 <linas> warlord, what gnucash email?
10:24:45 <warlord> linas: a bunch of stuff sending to linas at linas dot org is bouncing.
10:25:20 <linas> oh that's 100% spam
10:25:46 <linas> gnucas.org and ihtfp should no loinger MX linas.org I'm, checking now
10:26:18 <warlord> linas: well, you're still the owner of some of the gnucash lists.. So it's sending messages to you.
10:27:05 <linas> oh hmm my owner email needs to be changed. You manage these lists?
10:27:50 <warlord> Theoretically you do too ;)
10:27:54 <warlord> (but yes, I do)
10:28:01 <warlord> I can go change it for you..

10:30:32 <linas> I'm not sure I could find my way to the lists at this time ... :-)
10:30:45 <apadner> if anyone needs a bookkeeper to manage the books of their business i am offering my services
10:31:35 <linas> hi apadner ... you should probably solicit the gnucash-user mailing list too
10:32:22 <linas> err, I take that back
10:32:55 <linas> if you don't know what gnucash is, you will probably make everyone angry if you start "spamming" the list
10:34:36 <linas> I suppose that there might be people who would be intrested in having a book-keeper ... but they'd sort of laugh at you if you didn't actualy bother to use gnucash ... which is sort of the point of this whole exercise
10:37:08 <warlord> linas: what address should I use for you?
10:37:14 <warlord> (feel free to pm it to me)
10:48:10 <linas> linasvepstas@gmail.com
10:52:35 <warlord> Okay, I'll go change the lists..
10:54:50 <warlord> Done.
10:54:54 <warlord> (I think I got 'em all)
10:55:43 <warlord> Now I just need to figure out why the mailman bounce processing is failing.
11:02:53 <linas> ugh. Thanks so now I am receiving dozens of bounce-spam reports ...
11:03:11 <linas> These need to go into the bit-bucket
11:08:18 <warlord> LOL
11:08:30 <warlord> I can change it to yet another address if you like?
11:08:41 <warlord> Or I can just remove you completely?
11:09:37 <warlord> I just want to know why mailman isn't processing bounces correctly. c.f. http://www.ihtfp.org/mailman-bounce.txt

11:29:42 *** twunder has joined #gnucash
11:31:56 <mib_uuketl5p> Anyone here?
11:34:21 <warlord> mib_uuketl5p: export them to QIF
11:34:39 <warlord> linas: would you like me to just remove you completely?
11:37:11 <linas> err, yes. I'm not going to wade through piles of spam bounce reports to try to find maybe one legit posting; and even if I found it, I wouldn't be trying to pass that on to the mailing lists.
11:37:23 <mib_uuketl5p> I have A LOT of accounts with Quicken. Must they be individually exported via QIF? or can you export them in one single file?
11:37:34 <linas> How good are your spam filters?
11:41:50 <warlord> mib_uuketl5p: GnuCash will import them in either format..
11:41:56 <warlord> linas: they are okay..
11:41:59 <warlord> I'll just remove you.
11:42:48 <linas> if you have good spam filters, then perhaps an "open" list would be good -- i.e. non-subscribers are allowed to post.
11:43:20 <linas> I have gotten to really like open lists, from the user point of view
11:46:53 <warlord> The spam filters aren't that good.
11:47:09 <warlord> You could ask jsled how many spams he moderates.
11:47:24 <jsled> it's not horrible.
11:47:50 <jsled> There's probably 10-30 moderated messages a day, of which 1-5 are ham.
11:48:07 <warlord> Which means 9-25 spam/day.
11:48:15 <warlord> ... which is IMHO too many to let through.

11:50:05 <warlord> linas: I just removed you.
11:50:32 <warlord> That will stop me from getting bounces about linas.org not accepting email, and you wont get all the spam bounces.

12:49:12 <warlord> mib_smaev2x9: I believe DC supports OFX-DC. See the wiki.
12:52:05 <mib_smaev2x9> Seems DC only allows download into MS money, Quicken, PDF and XLS..... where do I find the wiki info?
12:53:59 <warlord> there's a link right off the wiki main page.

13:26:04 <warlord> yeah....
13:26:21 <jsled> In the sub-thread that Cam Ellison was responding to, you'll see Cam's last response was just an empty message, an obvious mistake, whatever.
13:26:55 <jsled> Dude's not actually on the list, so all the messages are moderated through. So, he responds with "did you have something to say?"
13:27:13 * jsled eye rolls.
13:27:19 <warlord> LOL
13:27:24 <jsled> That's probably one of the few times I'll not moderate a message through.
13:28:07 <warlord> heh
13:28:17 <jsled> The others are all the "congrats! we've listed GnuCash on OurTrafficWhoringDownloadListingSite.com, and you've got the New Application Award!"
13:28:36 <warlord> anyways, I've decided to use exponential backoff on my responses to him.
13:28:45 <warlord> And his quoting sucks.
13:28:56 <jsled> right.
13:29:11 <warlord> Am I being "me"? Or am I being reasonable?

13:31:28 <jsled> heh. I'm not really following, and his quoting does suck, so it's hard to tell, but I think you're being reasonable. I mean, his points aren't totally invalid, but he's just being dickish.
13:31:44 <jsled> But, yeah, gnucash is just really frustrating in a lot of ways. Sorry.
13:32:40 <warlord> Oh, it is.. I know.
