00:00:08 *** dndrich has joined #gnucash
00:02:17 <dndrich> I have never used IRC before, so bear with me! I am installing gnucash on Mac OS X Tiger using MacPorts. So far, so good. Install is still going. How do I start gnucash once I am done?
00:03:27 <jsled> at the prompt, type "gnucash" and hit return.
00:03:39 <jsled> s/at the prompt/in a Terminal window/
00:03:48 <jsled> I don't know if you need to start X11 first, but I wouldn't doubt it.
00:03:55 <jsled> hopefully someone will correct me if need be.
00:04:51 <dndrich> Yes, I think I need to start x11 first, but it looks like it is installing a macport version of x11 rather than the apple version. I am still compiling, so i will see if this works.

01:58:31 <dndrich_> OK, I installed gnucash on my mac using macports. Seemed to go perfectly
01:59:00 <dndrich_> now, when I type gnucash in xterm, it doesn't start gnucash. any idea what to do?
01:59:14 <goodger> what does it do instead of starting gnucash?
01:59:27 <dndrich_> it says command not found
01:59:43 <dndrich_> I am using os x tiger
02:00:03 <goodger> try hitting tab instead of enter and see if it has a different name
02:00:11 <goodger> otherwise, it's not in your $PATH
02:00:40 <dndrich_> it seemed to indicate it installed another xterm of some kind while compiling
02:01:18 <dndrich_> tab didn't do anything in the x11 window
02:01:48 <goodger> then the binary isn't in your $path
02:02:05 <dndrich_> well, I don't know what $path is
02:02:16 <dndrich_> I assume it is a file that lists where to look for binaries
02:02:34 <goodger> $path is the system configuration variable that contains a number of directories where binaries may be found
02:02:35 <dndrich_> I don't know where macports installs binaries
02:02:43 <goodger> I don't know where you should look for it, but a reasonable bet is to start with macports' documentation
02:03:12 <dndrich_> OK, I will start there. I used the mac os x install instructions at the gnucash wiki, but here i am
02:04:04 <goodger> hmm
02:04:19 <goodger> give me five minutes to start firefox and I'll look...
02:04:36 <dndrich_> unfortunately, I have to head off to bed. thanks for trying. I'll work on this again tomorrow!
02:04:50 <goodger> bye

15:25:33 <Jim> Hi all. Can anyone tell me how to copy my accounts over to start 09/10 accounts?
15:25:57 <jsled> Jim: what sort of accounts? Straight personal finance, or business accounts too?
15:26:20 <Jim> hi jsled. business
15:26:32 <Jim> 0809 is not reconciled yet
15:28:03 <warlord> duplicate the data fie?
15:28:04 <warlord> file
15:29:06 <Jim> just want to copy the accounts themselves, not the data inside. So I have the same structure as before
15:29:07 <warlord> (there is no good way to export/import the business objects, nor is there a good way to delete old transactions)
15:29:30 <warlord> If all you want are the accounts, you can File -> Export -> Export Accounts.
15:29:41 <warlord> But that will give you ONLY your accounts.
15:29:59 <Jim> not the figures within?
15:30:00 <warlord> (it will lose all your business objects)_
15:30:03 <warlord> Nope,
15:30:15 <warlord> No figures, no transactions, no opening balances..
15:30:15 <Jim> think thats what I need
15:31:26 <Jim> Guess the usual way is to do it after all acounts are reconciled for 0809
15:31:38 <warlord> Right
15:31:41 <Jim> still working though jan
15:31:51 <warlord> And then manually you'll need to reset the opening balances.
15:32:21 <warlord> (or you can do what I do and just keep the accounts going -- there's very little reason to start over)
15:33:28 <Jim> Guess not. Like a fresh start, me
15:33:43 <warlord> ok
15:36:17 <Jim> easy solution. just exported. worked a treat
15:36:44 <Jim> thx

19:27:13 <dndrich> Bear with me, I am new to IRC
19:27:45 <dndrich> I have used macports to install gnucash on OS X tiger. I followed the instructions to the letter, and all appears to have installed
19:28:04 <dndrich> Now, when I run gnucash in xterm, nothing happens. gnucash doesn't start
19:28:28 <dndrich> so, I need help to figure out how to get gnucash running. The install tool about 2 hours with all the compiling
19:28:55 <dndrich> So, any thoughts would be appreciated!
19:33:21 <warlord> dndrich: Have you followed the recent activity on the gnucash-user mailing list?
19:33:52 <dndrich> no. I don't know about that. I am not on that list. Can I see that from a web browser?
19:34:02 <warlord> of course.
19:34:06 <warlord> off the web page
19:34:24 <dndrich> OK, I will look at that, and see if there is info to help me...thanks!

20:54:01 <amep> Hello there.
20:54:27 <amep> I'm trying to import financial transactions from a OFX file (downloaded from citibank). It works for the most part, but I'm having an issue with importing transfers between accounts.
20:55:29 <amep> When there are a pair of transactions (say +$700 on one account and -$700 on another) I cannot find a way to make them into a single balanced transaction.
20:55:59 <warlord> when you import you assign the correct "other" account.
20:56:05 <warlord> Then on the other import you mark it as a dup.
20:56:10 *** iamawake has quit IRC
20:56:27 <amep> OK that makes sense.
20:57:47 <amep> By "mark as dup" do you mean uncheck both the check boxes on that record in the "import transaction matcher" window?
20:58:18 <warlord> I'm not exactly sure on the ui..
20:58:34 <amep> OK thanks. I'll just experiment.
20:58:52 <warlord> ok
