01:50:06 <Charmy> Hello! I'm wondering if anyone can help me with running GnuCash 2.2.9 on a Windows XP SP3 machine. I launch the program, but after running the batch file I don't get a window coming up. Task manager lists gnucash-bin.exe and instances of gconfd running but nothing happens.
01:51:12 <Charmy> I saw the problem listed on forums, so I guess its not the first time it has come up. There were suggestions to install a Microsoft Loopback Adapter, which I tried, but no cigar :(

12:37:20 <warlord> Oh, by "custom report dialog" you don't mean a dialog for a new report, but you mean a dialog to control custom report management...
12:37:29 <andrewsw> yes, the latter

12:37:57 <warlord> I think probably it belongs in report-gone

14:06:30 <andrewsw> sheesh
14:08:29 <warlord> ???
14:09:12 <andrewsw> I've never messed around with adding files, menu items, etc to gnucash... but I've got a button on a menu that actually does something! ;)
14:09:34 <andrewsw> only took me a couple of hours to dig my way through the code to figure it out.

14:15:18 <andrewsw> it's the simple things in life...
14:15:27 <warlord> Indeed.
14:17:38 <linas> google summer of code --- so, did gnucash not apply, or was it turned down?
14:18:10 <jsled> didn't apply.
14:18:35 <warlord> Didn't apply
14:18:54 <warlord> I haven't had time, and nobody else seemed to ask about it.
14:19:29 <warlord> When we did it in '07 it was a near failure, IMHO. 1 project got merged into trunk (csv import), but it's still pretty broken.
14:36:18 *** warlord has quit IRC
14:42:11 <jcreigh> I don't know anything about Gnucash's CSV import feature, but any sort of CSV import in general is really, really, hard because of all the different data layouts you might encounter.
14:44:26 *** pestilence has joined #gnucash
14:48:53 <pestilence> i have a question about F::Q...i use it to update prices on some funds, and it stopped working in the version that is in ubuntu intrepid (2.2.6)
14:49:05 <pestilence> take VDEQX for example
14:49:23 <pestilence> if you do gnc-fq-dump yahoo -v VDEQX, everything looks o.k. to me
14:49:34 <pestilence> but if you do gnc-fq-dump yahoo -v FUND:VDEQX, it says that it can't be used by gnucash
14:49:58 <pestilence> and it would seem that gnucash requires a namespace...

15:38:26 <andrewsw> when I'm in C, using values from Scheme, hopefully as a string, in a GtkListStore, can I use them as SCM values or do I need to somehow convert them to G_TYPE_STRING?

15:45:45 <andrewsw> ah, nm, I see how to do it.
15:54:08 <andrewsw> hmmm... of more interest is extracting a guid from scheme...
15:54:21 <andrewsw> just treat it as a string?
15:56:36 <warlord> Yeah.
15:57:27 <andrewsw> G_TYPE_STRING within a GtkListStore?
15:58:53 <warlord> Ummm...
15:58:57 <warlord> From C or Scheme?
15:59:37 <andrewsw> I'm in the C side, buiding a 2-column list of names and guids
15:59:47 <andrewsw> but the data is coming from the scheme side.
15:59:54 <andrewsw> as a list of pairs
16:00:45 *** goodger has joined #gnucash
16:03:18 <warlord> Umm...
16:03:26 <warlord> Why are you trying to display a GUID?
16:04:45 <andrewsw> I'm not, I just need to keep it around so I can use it later...
16:05:29 <andrewsw> I'm only displaying the first column from the list, but when the selection is made, I use the second column of the iter to get the guid of the report to run.
16:06:57 <warlord> Oh, umm... I suppose you could store it as a string, but why not just keep it as metadata for the row?
16:07:31 <andrewsw> what do you mean?
16:07:54 <warlord> I mean don't use a G_TYPE_STRING
16:08:20 <warlord> look in the register rewrite branch and see what it uses.
16:08:24 <andrewsw> oh, just leave it as a SCM type that is completely insulated/isolated from the C side?
16:08:30 <andrewsw> okay.
16:08:44 <warlord> Or keep it as a GUID*
16:09:05 <andrewsw> I mean, I guess on the C side I don't care what it is... so long as it has meaning when it goes back to the scheme side.
16:19:19 <warlord> I'm just worried about it becoming a visible column.
16:19:34 <warlord> But... Can't you use a GNC_TYPE_GUID?
16:26:14 <andrewsw> maybe. I'll try it. It's all a very foggy, vague sort of place for me, the intersection of C types and scheme and their use in various places
16:27:17 <warlord> Ignore the interaction.
16:27:28 <warlord> from the C side just think about it all in C.

20:50:23 <rgsteele||work> Is there any way to edit an account's starting value after it's already been created?
20:51:36 <goodger> jsled: sorry to ignore you
20:51:50 <goodger> jsled: I'm looking for publicly available data I can download in a reusable format with a stock ticker
20:52:05 <goodger> with python, specifically
20:52:12 <jsled> rgsteele||work: sure. just edit the Opening Balance transaction, or add one.
20:52:41 <goodger> I'm looking for the data that's published annually in reports to shareholders
20:53:17 <rgsteele||work> jsled: Opening Balance transaction? You mean the Opening Balanced ledger?
20:53:21 <jsled> well, you could try ot parse the EDGAR filings yourself, but I'm sure that's partly what's underlying the other datasets too.
20:53:50 <jsled> goodger: fwiw, that's sort of exactly what D&B and others do, and charge a pretty penny for it.
20:53:58 <warlord> rgsteele||work: think double-entry. it's a transaction between the account and Eq:O-B
20:53:58 <goodger> EDGAR?
20:54:05 <goodger> hrmph
20:54:09 <jsled> .wik edgar
20:54:16 * jsled looks around for a bot that's not here.
20:54:33 <jsled> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EDGAR
20:55:00 <warlord> jsled: we can try to add that extension to gncbot next week once I migrate.
20:55:30 <jsled> oh, … it's a different bot entirely that I'm accustomed to having around.
20:55:34 <goodger> so my idea for a program that downloads information given a stock ticker and then produces a report based on said financial information would be somewhat impeded by the fact that such information is not available in a pleasant format
20:55:49 <rgsteele||work> warlord: Ah, got it. Thanks.

20:57:06 <goodger> how inconvenient. back to the drawing board, then
20:57:15 <goodger> I can't exactly get the user to input all that stuff manually
21:13:54 <warlord> goodger: that's sort of why F::Q exists.
21:17:56 <goodger> F::Q?
21:18:11 <warlord> Finance::Quote
21:30:59 <goodger> ah
21:31:03 <goodger> does that tell you the market capitalisation of the company?
21:31:39 <warlord> no, it gets you price quotes.
21:31:41 <goodger> and other key figures, viz., loans on balance sheet, etc.
21:31:43 <jsled> nope. strictly screen-scrapes the current quotes.
21:31:46 <warlord> how does a market cap value apply to gnucash?
21:32:13 <goodger> it doesn't, but you guys are the only financial programmers I know
