21:09:06 <pinkey> hello, I have a few user interface questions. My wife just started using gnucash and I'm asking on her behalf.
21:10:06 <pinkey> when entering an expense item, she likes to type just 112508 for the date, but can only get gnucash to accept 11/25/2008 as the format. Can we change how date formats are parsed?
21:11:29 <pinkey> also, when entering a check, she's used to being able to type "n" for the next check number, and have it auto-fill, rather than having to type the full number for each check. (Especially since they're basically sequential in number.) Is there any kind of keyboard shortcut for this?
21:13:22 *** aindilis` has quit IRC
21:32:27 <jsled> pinkey: you can try changing the date format in the prefs, but I'm not sure if the register date widget will use it.
21:34:07 <jsled> Also, "+" in the num field will take the next check number
21:34:50 <pinkey> she says "thanks!"
21:36:45 <pinkey> We just tried the dates under preferences, but all the formats have a separator character, so none are "shorthand" for fast data entry. (She enters all the bills in big batches and likes the minimal typing.)
21:37:07 <pinkey> But the + for next check entry is a big help.
21:40:00 <jsled> There are keyboard shortcuts to do relative date entry … those might help, if she's entering in order.
21:42:46 <pinkey> ah, hitting +/- works. Thanks for the idea.
21:43:25 <jsled> {} and [], too.
21:43:37 <jsled> I think there's even a section in hte help on those shortcuts
21:44:12 <pinkey> :) She promises to read them.
21:45:28 <pinkey> I'm installing the docs right now.
21:46:07 <pinkey> but in the meanwhile... last question. Is there any way to get something like 'tab completion' for the expense categories? There are so many to choose from that she's finding it tedious to scroll throught them.
21:46:36 <jsled> Yup. The separator character will complete that section.
21:47:01 <jsled> So, if you have an account Expenses:Utilities:Gas or something, you can usually get away with "Ex:U:G"
21:47:11 <jsled> (er, with a <tab> at the end, there)
21:47:48 <pinkey> awesome. She's really happy now. :)
21:48:00 <pinkey> well, as happy as one can be doing bills.
21:48:11 <jsled> heh
