12:15:53 <cortana`> i've got an account with a lot of split transactions to different expense accounts
12:16:05 <cortana`> is there a way to find the sum of the portion of the split that go to the different accounts?
12:16:43 <warlord> cortana`: I dont understand the question
12:17:53 <cortana`> ok i'll step back :)
12:17:58 <cortana`> i've got an account, 'vat payable'
12:18:06 <warlord> okay
12:18:54 <cortana`> when buying things, i enter that as a split transaction from assets:cash to liabilities:vat payable and expenses:whatever
12:19:05 <warlord> okay..
12:19:43 <cortana`> so i'm sitting at the 'vat payable' register and i'm wondering how to get the sum of the splits to the various expense accounts
12:20:19 <cortana`> if i switch to transaction journal view, i can do an account report, and copy the html into a spreadsheet, then change the fields to be numbers, and do it there; but i was looking for a way to do it in gnucash too
12:21:02 <warlord> Cash Flow?
12:27:42 <cortana`> i'll give that a go
12:29:08 <warlord> ok
12:32:10 <cortana`> ok, that tells me about all my possible expenses, not just the vat-related ones
12:35:29 <cortana`> i think i have how to do it
12:35:39 <cortana`> i need to mark my expense accounts as tax related, then do the tax report
12:36:31 *** Zoolooc has joined #gnucash
12:38:20 <warlord> cortana`: Did you update the report options?
12:39:07 <cortana`> i think the problem is this... say I have a bank account "current account"
12:39:53 <cortana`> then I make a VAT-able purchase of a spade... £10 goes to expenses:equipment and £1 to liability:vat recievable
12:40:06 <cortana`> but I also pay an employee: £100 goes to expenses:payroll
12:40:22 <cortana`> the cash flow report shows both transactions because they both came from expenses:equipment
12:40:38 <cortana`> does it make sense to change the cash flow report to only show the vat account? hm, maybe it does
12:40:49 <warlord> Yes, that's what you need to do.
12:41:13 * cortana` tries it
12:49:11 <cortana`> that works, thanks!
12:49:54 <cortana`> the terminology is somewhat confusing, because I set 'vat payable' up as a liability account, but really we are going to be claiming money back :)
12:51:21 <cortana`> thanks again :)
12:53:53 <warlord> You're welcome.

19:05:28 <dash> i'm once again trying to get OFX working with my bank (compassbank.com). In the past I've downloaded OFX data from them, using ofx-ba.py -- but now i'm just getting 400 responses. Same using aqbanking (which did recognize the bank routing number). Any suggestions for tracking down the problem?
19:05:53 <dash> my next attempt is probably going to be loading up quicken and (if it succeeds) seeing what it sends for the request
19:06:50 <dash> oh look, now it works.
19:07:00 <dash> the problem solving abilities of IRC are truly boundless :D
19:08:03 <warlord> I think it's possible that BofA added two-factor auth that isn't supported by AqB

22:45:34 <postal> Hi, does anyone know if gnucash can calculate interest "on the fly": i.e. in an account with a constantly-changing amount?
22:45:45 <warlord> no
22:45:55 <postal> ok cheers
22:45:58 <warlord> at least not an unexpectedly changing amount
22:46:17 <postal> yeah, that's what i meant
22:46:19 <warlord> It can compute standard amortization
22:46:24 <postal> as in a transaction bank account
22:46:29 <warlord> but not the split if you pre-pay.
22:46:33 <postal> ok
22:46:55 <warlord> Um.. no, it cannot compute your monthly interest... each bank computes that uniquely.
22:46:57 <postal> thanks for that
22:47:01 <warlord> there really ins't a constant formula
22:47:21 <postal> oh right... i always thought it was just calculated daily
22:47:23 <postal> consistently
22:47:25 <postal> guess not
22:47:59 <postal> also, do you know anything about the macports gnucash version?
22:48:11 <postal> it's currently at 2.2.5
22:48:18 <warlord> no.. it looks like fink is much further ahead right now
22:48:30 <postal> ah ok
22:48:43 <postal> i guess i should bring this up with the macports people...
22:49:03 <warlord> yep
22:49:20 <postal> are you a mac user?
22:49:25 <warlord> nope. linux.
22:49:31 <postal> ok
22:49:43 <postal> cheers for the help
22:49:44 <warlord> (although I do have access to a ppc mac running 10.4 for some limited testing)
22:50:21 <postal> i've only just started using macports. i wasn't really sure whether to use fink or macports, but read somewhere that macports was updated more regularly. i guess not tho
22:50:38 <warlord> in the grand scheme it's true.
22:50:55 <warlord> fink was back at gnome 2.6 for a very very long time and only recently did a major upgrade.
22:50:58 <postal> ah ok
22:51:18 <postal> i'll go harass the macports people then :)
22:51:23 <postal> thanks again
